When you’re out riding your shiny new electric bike, the last thing you want is to be left stranded because you didn’t bring the right gear.

That’s why I’ve put together this list of the essential accessories for electric bike riders!

Whether you need a way to carry more cargo, some extra safety gear, or just a new way to have fun on your eco-friendly e-bike, I’ve got you covered.

Read on for my top picks and start enjoying your eco-friendly battery-assisted rides even more!

23 Must-Have Electric Bike Accessories: Complete Your Ride

I’ve broken my recommendations down into six key categories:

  1. Comfort
  2. Safety
  3. Security
  4. Storage
  5. Carrying Cargo
  6. Transportation

Comfort Accessories

Comfort is vital for getting the most out of your electric bikes (you’ll use it way more and travel way further if your bike is comfortable).

Here are my favorite tips and accessories to keep you comfortable on those long rides

Comfortable Seat

This is one of the most important things you can do for your electric bike, especially if you’re riding it for long distances.

If your electric bike came with a standard seat that’s not very comfortable, then simply change it for one that is.

For rough terrain, my favorite comfortable electric bike seat is the Rad Power Bikes Comfort Saddle ($59).

It comes with an extra layer of soft, supportive memory foam padding and elastomer spring rails to help smooth out bumps in the road.

The vacuum-formed, waterproof exterior also ensures that you’ll stay comfortable even on wet rides.

Handlebar Grips

Especially if you have big hands, handlebar grips can make a big difference when it comes to comfort. They also help you keep a firm grip on the handlebars, even when your hands are sweaty.

My favorite handlebar grips are Bontrager XR Trail Comp MTB Grips ($19).

Keep your hands happy on long rides with these excellent grips. With a unique finned texture that conforms to your hands for all-day comfort, these grips feature cores made with recycled materials, helping keep plastic out of our oceans.

They’re also lock-on grips, meaning they won’t slip or spin on your handlebars.

Good Pedals

Good pedals will make pedaling easier and more comfortable, which is crucial when riding for long periods.

My favorite comfort pedals are BV Bike Shimano SPD Compatible Pedals With Toe Clips ($59.99).

If you want more of a workout from your electric bike, you need to pedal more. You'll improve your health, lose weight and save electricity too.

These pedals from BV Bike are compatible with SPD cycling shoes, allowing you to apply more power to the pedals by pulling in the pedal stroke as well as pushing. The toe clips allow for the same pedal action while wearing regular sneakers.

Riding Gloves

This is especially important if you live in a cold climate.

Riding an electric bike can be tough on your hands, so it’s essential to keep them warm and protected. A good pair of gloves will also help you grip the handlebars more securely.

My favorite riding gloves are the Fox Ranger Gel Bike Gloves ($35.95).

These gloves are incredibly comfortable and grippy.

The padding in the palms helps reduce fatigue on long rides, and the touch-screen compatible digits are helpful when using your cell for navigation on a cold day.

Water Bottle Cage

It’s important to stay hydrated when riding, especially if you’re riding long distances.

A water bottle cage allows you to securely carry an eco-friendly water bottle with you on your ride, so you can take a drink whenever you need to.

My favorite water bottle cage is USHAKE Water Bottle Cages ($14.99).

Two water bottle cages. For under fifteen bucks. Bargain! Either use both to carry two water bottles or save one as a spare.

These cages effortlessly hold a 20oz water bottle and can be bent to accommodate smaller bottles if needed.

Safety Accessories

Electric bicycles are a great eco-friendly way to get around, but it’s important to remember that the motor can get you up to pretty high speeds, so care needs to be taken to stay safe.

Here are my favorite tips and accessories to help you enjoy your bike in complete safety.

Helmet

This is non-negotiable, no matter what kind of bike you’re riding. A good bike helmet will protect your head in the event of a fall. It can also help to keep you cool on those hot summer days.

My favorite is the top-rated Smith Express MIPS Cycling Helmet ($110).

The Smith Express MIPS range of helmets is perfect for all your commuting, urban expeditions, and local trail explorations. Its sleek design gives it a minimalist look, while its integrated rear light and reflective straps increase visibility.

Mirrors

I highly recommend getting a mirror or two for your bike. They give you a much wider field of view than you would have without one and help you avoid accidents.

My favorite mirror is the D+D Oberlauda UltraLite Bike Mirror ($30).

The parabolic shape of this mirror provides a wide field of view, so you can see approaching traffic early and make adjustments to your riding accordingly.

It’s lightweight, durable, and has a versatile clamp that allows attachment to pretty much any bike.

Reflective Vest

Wearing reflective clothing is a great way to make sure you’re visible to other riders and drivers, especially in low-light conditions.

It’s also a good idea to have a reflective vest and sustainable waterproof jacket on hand in case you get caught out in the rain after dark.

My favorite is the Amphipod Full-Visibility Reflective Vest ($35).

The vest is made of durable, lightweight fabric and has a comfortable, adjustable fit. It also has a zippered pocket for carrying small items like your phone or keys.

The 3M Scotchlite™ high-brilliance reflective material is positioned at the vest’s front, back, and sides for 360° visibility. So, whether you’re running, cycling, or walking the dog, this vest will help you stay visible and safe.

Lights

If you’re going to be riding your electric bike at night or in low-light conditions, you’ll need a good set of bike lights.

Most electric bikes come with integrated front and rear lights. However, there’s no harm in adding more if you feel they’re insufficient.

My favorite is the uniquely designed Rad Power Bike Rad Taillight ($25).

Rad Power Bikes has done it again with another great product! The Rad Taillight is one of the most stylish and unique lights on the market.

It’s also very effective, with multiple light modes that will help you be seen while riding your bike.

Charging is quick and straightforward using the charging cable included.

Bell/Horn

A bell or horn can be a great way to let people know you’re coming, especially if they’re not paying attention.

They can also help you clear a path through crowded areas. Just be sure to use them sparingly to not annoy those around you.

My favorite bell is the Nutcase Ride The Plank Large Bell ($14.99).

It’s a classic bicycle bell design mixed with Day of the Dead vibes!

First Aid Kit

It’s always good to have a first aid kit with you, no matter what bike you ride. You never know when you might need it, and it’s better to be safe than sorry.

My favorite first aid kit to take on a long bike ride is the exceptional Uncharted Supply Co. First Aid Triage Kit ($39).

It contains everything I’d need to patch myself up from potential falls, etc.

I highly recommend this first aid kit for anyone who takes their biking seriously. It’s an essential purchase that could one day save your life.

Security Accessories

Electric cycles are becoming increasingly popular, and with good reason. They’re a great eco-friendly way to get around, and they can be a lot of fun too.

However, with that increased popularity comes an increased theft risk. So it’s important to take steps to protect your bike from thieves.

Here are my favorite tips for some affordable ways to help you keep your bike out of the hands of thieves.

Lock

The first and most important security step is to get a good lock. This will deter thieves and make it more difficult for them to steal your bike.

My favorite bicycle lock is the Kryptonite KryptoLok 990 Combo Chain Lock ($81.95).

I’m forever losing keys, so I prefer a combination lock over a key-operated lock. Kryptonite rates this lock as a 6/10 on their security scale. This offers plenty of protection for most situations.

However, if you’re going to leave your bike unattended in a public space for multiple days/weeks, you might want to go for a 9/10 or even a 10/10.

Tracker

A tracker can be a great way to recover your ebike if stolen.

My favorite tracking system is an Apple AirTag ($29) hidden in a TagLock Rear Light ($29.99).

This doesn’t have the bells and whistles of some of the more sophisticated tracker systems. However, it’s easy to conceal and will tell you exactly where your ebike is if it ever gets stolen.

Storage Solutions

Electric bicycles are often big and heavy. This can present issues when it comes to storage.

Here are my favorite tips on the most affordable ways to store your ebike.

Wall Rack

If you don’t have a lot of floor space, you can always hang your ebike up on the wall. This is an excellent option if you have high ceilings.

Just take care to ensure that the rack is securely fastened to the wall and the wall (and rack) is strong enough to take the weight of your ebike.

My favorite wall rack is the Feedback Sports Velo Wall Rack 2D Bike Stand ($50).

It was simple to install, and I love the flexibility of the 2D mechanism. It can hold bikes up to 50 lbs with ease.

Bike Cover

A cover can help to keep your ebike clean and protected from the elements if you don’t have room to store it inside.

My favorite bike cover is the Electra Bicycle Cover ($50).

It’s made from a waterproof fabric that protects your ebike from rain, dust, and sun. The cover also has an integrated lock-hole so that you can secure your bike to a fence or pole.

I’ve used this cover for multiple different bikes, and it’s worked great every time.

Accessories for Carrying Cargo

An e-bike can be a great way to get you around town and out into the country. But what do you do when you need to carry lots of cargo?

My top tip would be to buy an electric cargo bike. However, there are accessories that can turn even the smallest e-bike into a family packhorse.

Here are some easy ways in which you boost your bike’s carrying capacity.

Pannier Bags

If you’re going to be carrying lots on your ebike, you’ll need some bike bags.

They’ll help distribute the weight evenly and make it easier to take everything you need on your next adventure.

My favorite is the QuietKat Waterproof Pannier Bag ($99).

QuietKat’s Pannier bag hangs on either side of the rear wheel of your ebike and can carry up to 3,300 cubic cm of gear.

These premium constructed bags are made from marine-grade, waterproof materials.

Bike Trailer

If you find your ebike is always fully loaded and you still need to carry more, you might need to invest in a trailer.

A bike trailer can be a great way to increase your carrying capacity without compromising the stability of your ebike.

My favorite ebike trailer is the spacious and versatile Burley Bee Double Bike Trailer ($329.95).

With a spacious interior, the Burley Bee can accommodate two children or gear for a day at the beach. Its durable design features 20" wheels that provide a smooth ride, and reflective fabric keeps you visible on low-light adventures.

This trailer has a maximum weight limit of 100 lbs and is a more stable alternative for transporting children than a rear seat attached to your ebike.

Transportation Accessories

Sometimes it’s your ebike itself that needs carrying (when taking on vacation, for example).

Here are my favorite tips and solutions to help you safely transport your ebike.

Car Roof Rack

If you have a car, then a roof rack can be a great way to transport your ebike.

Just make sure you choose a roof rack that’s rated for the weight of your ebike and follow the instructions carefully to avoid damaging your vehicle.

My favorite ebike roof rack is the Thule UpRide Roof Bike Rack ($259.95).

Thule is a well-known and respected brand. This roof rack can carry most 20-29” wheel bicycles with tires up to 3” wide. It can fit up to 5” tires with an adapter (sold separately).

It’s easy to attach to the car, and the ebike feels very secure.

Car Bike Rack

If you don’t want to put your ebike on the roof of your car, you still have other options. A car bike rack can be a great way to transport your ebike without compromising on space.

My favorite car bike rack is the MaxxHaul 50025 Hitch Mount ($62.99).

The MaxxHaul 50025 Hitch Mount is an excellent option for transporting your ebike. It’s durable and can hold two bikes (100 lbs in total).

Attaching it to the hitch is the work of a few minutes. So easy even Mrs. M managed to fit it the last time we used it! ????

Folding Electric Bikes

Folding electric cycles are the easiest to transport. Most will fold down to a size small enough to be transported in the trunk of your car.

You can read more about my favorite folding e-bikes here.

Maintenance Solutions

Maintaining your ebike is essential to keep it running smoothly and extend its lifespan.

Here are my favorite tips and accessories to help keep your ebike in tip-top condition.

Cleaning

After every ride, it’s important to give your ebike a good clean. This will help remove any dirt and grit that could damage the bike or its components.

I like to use e-bike-specific cleaning products, but plain old soap and water will also do the job. Just make sure you avoid getting any water inside the electrical components of the bike.

My favorite e-bike cleaning product is MucOff Waterless Wash For E-Bikes ($18).

I like how easy this product is to use. Just spray it on and wipe it off. There’s no need for water or any other cleaning products. It does a superb job of removing light contaminants and leaving behind a streak-free luster.

Lubrication

It’s also important to regularly lubricate the moving parts of your ebike. This will help to keep them running smoothly and prevent any premature wear and tear.

My favorite e-bike lubrication product is WD-40 Specialist Bike Chain Lube - 2.5 Oz - Pack Of 4 ($19.98).

My dad swears by all WD-40 products, and this bike-specific offering is fantastic.

It’s an excellent all-purpose lubricant that you can use on chains, gears, and cables. It’s easy to apply, and it works well. It’s affordable and comes in a handy little aerosol spray bottle.

I also like to use this lubricant on my bike’s pedals. It helps to keep them running smoothly and prevents any squeaking or sticking.

Tools

Having a good set of bicycle tools is also important for maintaining your ebike. This will allow you to make any necessary adjustments and repairs.

My favorite ebike toolset is the M19 Multi-Tool from crankbrothers.

It has pretty much everything you’d need to repair your ebike when put and about. It’s made from high-quality materials and is straightforward to use.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I Charge My E-Bike Battery After Every Ride?

Yes, I recommend charging after every ride. Of course, if you’re short on time or just don’t feel like it, every few rides will be fine.

However, don’t let your battery run down too often, as that can shorten its lifespan.

The Final Word

No matter what type of ebike you have, it’s important to have the right tools and add-ons to make your ride as enjoyable and safe as possible.

In this article, I’ve shared my favorite e-bike accessories with you. I hope it’s helped you find something to pimp your next ride.

Happy riding!
