They Say: Live large on the new Electric Mundo Cargo Bike; the “minivan of bicycles” just got turbo boost. Improving on our classic Mundo Cargo Bike design, the Electric Mundo is overbuilt in all the right ways. The new Mundo sports a chromoly steel frame for added comfort and strength, Magura hydraulic disc brakes for optimal braking power, and the Shimano Steps E8000 motor, for added pedal power up to 20 mph.
We Say: The Yuba Mundo Cargo Electric Bike is a fantastic option for those looking for an e-bike that can handle a lot of weight. With a load capacity of 550 lbs, this bike can take everything you throw at it.
With all that weight potentially moving at 20 mph, you need good stopping power. Thanks to the Magura hydraulic disc brakes, the Yuba Mundo has just that. In fact, the brakes are so good they take a few goes to get used to applying them without skidding.
The Shimano Steps E8000 motor is an excellent and dependable workhorse, and the mid-drive mounting gives a nice natural feel when you apply the power.
All of the longer bikes in this article take a little getting used to. However, this was the one I mastered the quickest.
The Yuba Mundo Cargo Bike is available in two colors (Tan and Gold).
It gets my vote as the overall winner due to a combination of four things:
It’s available to buy from outdoor experts Rei (a brand I’ve used/recommended in the past for swimwear), but unfortunately, home delivery is not an option. This is not a significant issue because Rei offers free pickup from any of their stores across the U.S.
They Say: Say hello to new adventures and a more sustainable lifestyle with the Yuba Kombi E5. Powered by Shimano STEPS E5000 system, it’s your portable, reliable and fun, haul-anything compact cargo e-bike. Same wheelbase as a standard bike, so it fits on a bus rack and offers an upright storage solution for apartment living.
We Say: Like the sound of the Yuba Mundo Cargo Bike that made it as my overall winner, but feel a compact and cheaper version would be more suited to you?
Then you’re in luck. Step forward the Yuba Kombi E5!
This electric cargo bike still offers a great ride but with a more manageable price tag.
It’s a well-made machine that looks the part, and it’s clear a lot of thought has gone into its design. The electric motor is virtually silent in operation, a huge plus point!
The Kombi E5 is easy to ride, even if you’re not used to riding a bike with cargo. It’s stable and predictable, making it great for carrying around kids or shopping.
The motor provides plenty of power, and in my experience, you get a range of around 40 miles when fully loaded.
What Yuba has done here is take the overall concept of the Mundo and make it smaller with slightly cheaper parts and materials.
The result is an excellent electric cargo bike and a $1,500 saving…NICE!
This model is available from Rei with home delivery at $75. Or, you can collect from one of their stores across the U.S.
They Say: This next-level hauler is perfect for taking the kids across town or loading up at the hardware store. The electric cargo bike’s elongated frame and lower center of gravity provide stable, reliable rides, even when you’re taking full advantage of the 350 lb. payload capacity. Take a passenger (or two!) for a spin. Our family-friendly accessories get the whole gang outside.
We Say: This fantastic cargo bike from the brilliantly named Rad Power Bikes made it onto the list of recommendations in my Best Eco-Friendly Electric Bikes article, so it stands to reason that it also deserves a mention here.
The RadWagon electric cargo bike is a great-looking machine, available in either black or orange (orange is easily the best). For me, it’s one of the most stylish e-cargo bikes.
As with all of Rad Power Bikes’ products, it comes with a powerful motor and battery combination as standard, perfect for those who need a little extra help when taking on hills.
The motor is a 750W hub motor, which is located in the rear wheel, and it’s powered by a 48V battery. This gives the RadWagon 4 a top speed of 20 mph and a range of 45+ miles (although this will be reduced if you’re carrying a lot of weight).
The RadWagon 4 has a payload capacity of 350lbs (the integrated rear rack feels like it could carry an adult elephant!). This might be considered a little on the low side for a cargo bike but should still be more than enough for most riders’ needs.
The bike comes with 22” wheels fitted with Rad Power Bikes branded tires. These are excellent. They’re grippy, puncture-resistant, and help make the RadWagon 4 a comfortable ride.
As you would expect from an e-cargo bike from an excellent brand such as Rad Power Bikes, the RadWagon comes with all the necessary accessories as standard. These include a front and rear cargo rack, fenders, integrated lights, and a kickstand.
It also comes with a one-year warranty for peace of mind.
One drawback is that it’s not available in a step-through frame version. This means that it might not be the most suitable option for those with limited mobility.
However, if mobility is not an issue for you, this is an incredible cargo bike and a very reasonable price.
U.S. shipping is free, and there’s also a 14-day free trial available for you to see the bike in your own home and decide if you want to keep it or not.
They Say: Perfect for errands, perfect for fun, this electric utility bike comes fully-loaded with exclusive accessories to elevate your everyday experiences. The passenger package invites you to bring a friend for the ride, while the premium headlight gives you the confidence to hit the road any time.
We Say: The Rad Power Bikes RadWagon 4 is an excellent electric cargo bike, but, as mentioned above, it’s not ideally suited for those with limited mobility.
That’s where the Rad Power Bikes RadRunner Plus comes into its own.
With its shorter wheelbase, smaller wheels, and step-through design, it’s much more accessible while still carrying a decent payload of 300 lbs.
It also comes with a passenger package as standard, so you can take a friend or family member along for the ride.
On the performance front, the RadRunner Plus is powered by a 750W hub motor that gives it plenty of torque to get up to speed quickly and climb hills with ease. The battery has a capacity of 48V 14Ah (672 Wh) which gives it a range of around 45 miles, depending on conditions.
The RadRunner Plus is an excellent option for those looking for an electric utility bike that’s easy to use and comes with all the bells and whistles you could want.
As with all Rad Power Bikes, U.S. shipping is free, and there’s a 14-day free trial available.
They Say: Built For The Commute. Ready For The Trails. The Villager is a crossover all-terrain eBike. Designed to be agile and nimble for cruising city streets, tough enough for the trails, and powerful enough to get you up moderate climbs with large loads without breaking a sweat.
We Say: This is an absolute pocket rocket of an electric cargo bike.
Weighing in at just 50 lbs, the QuietKat Villager Urban E-Bike is a go-anywhere machine. Thanks in no small part to its 26” wheels, grippy tires, and responsive 500W motor.
Whether you’re commuting to work, lugging groceries, dodging the traffic on the school run, or hitting the trails at the weekend, this e-bike is more than up to the task. In fact, it’s one of the most versatile electric bikes I’ve ever tested.
One of the things I love about the Villager is its low center of gravity. This makes it very stable, even when fully loaded with cargo. Speaking of which, this bike has a whopping load capacity of 320 lbs, which is pretty incredible for a bike of this size/weight.
The battery pack is also impressive. It’s a 48V, 12.80 Ah (614 Wh) unit that gives the Villager an advertised range of 19-38 miles (around 30 in my experience). And because it’s located low down on the frame, that also helps with the center of gravity and balance.
This is not technically an electric cargo bike in terms of length. However, the amount of stuff it will carry for you is awe-inspiring. Especially when you start to upgrade and add cargo accessories.
Free U.S. shipping is available on all QuietKat bikes, and a one-year warranty gives you peace of mind.
There is also a 30-day risk-free trial, so you can put the Villager through its paces and then decide if it’s the one for you. Terms apply. Click here for more details.
They Say: They say three is a crowd, but not when it comes to riding a trike! The Cerana T by Buzz offers all of the great specs of the Buzz Cerana but brings added stability and storage. The three oversized tires offer a smooth ride, and the wide padded seat keeps you comfortable, while the electric assist allows your rides to last longer as you venture further than before.
We Say: If you’re looking for the ultimate in accessibility and stability, you should consider an electric cargo tricycle. They’re perfect for those who want to enjoy the outdoors without worrying about tipping over. And the added storage space means you can bring everything you need on your adventures.
I tested a few three-wheelers, and the Cerana T by Buzz won easily!
It’s well-built, comfortable to ride, and has plenty of features to help you make the most of your rides.
The three oversized tires offer a smooth ride, and the wide padded seat keeps you comfortable while you enjoy longer rides with the electric assistance.
The Cerana T comes with a two-year warranty for the electronics and a ten-year warranty for the frame, making it a great investment for those who want to enjoy the outdoors without worry.
This is an excellent family cargo bike. For under seventeen hundred bucks. Well played Buzz. WELL PLAYED!
The bike arrives 90% re-assembled (don’t worry…the other 10% is a breeze!), and free shipping by FedEx Freight is available to the lower 48 States.
Shopping for the best electric cargo bike can be pretty pricey, so it’s a buying decision you need to take seriously. You need to bear in mind numerous things when trying to find the perfect electric workhorse for your family.
The best electric cargo bikes need to pack a punch in the power department so they can handle the weight of all the stuff you’re likely to be transporting.
Another important consideration is battery life. You want to make sure you choose a bike with a battery that will last long enough to get you where you need to go.
Of course, you also want your bike to be fast. After all, what’s the point of an electric cargo bike if it can’t keep up with traffic? Some cargo e-bikes can reach top speeds of 28 mph, which is plenty fast for most needs.
When it comes to range, some cargo e-bikes can travel over 50 miles on a single charge. This is more than enough for most people’s daily needs.
Some of the best electric cargo bikes can carry over 500 pounds of weight, which is plenty for most families.
If you need to transport more than that, maybe look for a bike that can tow a trailer.
Of course, price is always a consideration when purchasing any vehicle. Electric cargo bicycles cost thousands of dollars.
You need to make sure you’re getting the features you need at a price you’re willing to pay.
Your family is the most precious cargo, so you want to make sure that the electric cargo bike you choose is rugged and well built.
All the recommendations on my electric cargo bikes list are made from high-quality materials and feature components built to last. They’re also covered by manufacturer-backed warranties.
You want to make sure the bike is comfortable to ride. A good cargo e-bike will feature comfortable seats, handlebars, and suspensions that make riding a pleasure.
Your bike also needs to be stable, especially if you’re carrying a lot of weight or multiple children. The best electric cargo bikes have wide tires and a low center of gravity that make them easy to control.
Most cargo e-bikes are pretty big, so you’ll need to think about how and where you’ll store it when not in use.
There’s no getting away from it. Running errands in bad weather is where a car/van has a significant edge over an electric cargo bike.
Some electric cargo bikes will come with a rain cover or canopy to keep you and your family dry when the weather takes a turn for the worse.
Good quality front and back fenders will also protect you from splashes.
Consider always taking a sustainable waterproof jacket with you on every journey...just in case!
You’re potentially carrying a lot of weight on the electric cargo bike, so you need good brakes that’ll help you stop immediately in an emergency.
I covered some of the above features in more detail and other more general features in my electric folding bike article.
There are three main types of electric cargo bikes:
The length and weight of cargo e-bikes mean they can take a bit of getting used to. But riding an electric cargo bike is a breeze once you get the hang of it!
Here are five tips to help you get started:
With a bit of practice, you’ll be riding your electric cargo bike like a pro in no time!
A cargo e-bike is a bicycle with an electric motor that helps the rider pedal. They’re also known as electric-assist bicycles or pedal-assist bicycles.
Cargo e-bikes have become more prevalent as people look for alternatives to cars and public transportation. Cargo e-bikes usually have a long wheelbase and can carry lots of cargo or even multiple passengers.
According to TheBikeAdvisor, a 3000W e-bike can reach 46 to 48 mph. However, most electric bikes have a speed limit of 28 mph or 20 mph to comply with U.S. law.
The range of an electric bike depends on a few factors, including the battery size, terrain, and rider weight.
A typical e-bike can go 20-40 miles (32-64 km) on a single charge. However, some higher-end bikes have a range of over 100 miles
Electric bikes have several benefits over traditional bicycles. They’re easier to ride up hills, they don’t require as much effort from the rider, and they can go longer distances.
Electric bikes also don’t produce emissions, so they’re better for the environment.
In most states, you do not need a license to ride an e-bike. However, some states require riders to have a special license or permit. Check with your local Department of Motor Vehicles to find out the requirements in your state.
Most e-bikes do not need to be registered, but some states require registration. Again, check with your local Department of Motor Vehicles to find out the requirements in your state.
There are no age limits for Class 1 and Class 2 e-bikes. Age limits apply for Class 3 e-bikes. You can read more about e-bike classifications here.
It’s typically not legal to ride e-bikes on the sidewalk. E-bikes are considered vehicles, so you should ride them on the road like other vehicles or on designated cycle lanes.
However, there are some exceptions to this rule. For example, in California, e-bikes are allowed on sidewalks if they’re ridden by someone 16 years of age or younger.
Do you live in a hilly area? Do you need to transport heavy loads? Do you have a long commute? An electric cargo bike might well be the answer.
The best electric cargo bikes are equipped with powerful motors that can help you conquer even the steepest hills…with hundreds of pounds of cargo and passengers in tow.
Giving you the flexibility to use them for the school run, the weekly shop, or even load them up with everything you need for a day at the beach or a weekend camping trip.
Electric cargo bikes are an investment that can save you time and money. With the rising cost of gas and the time it takes to commute, an electric cargo bike is a smart choice for many families. When you factor in all the features these bikes offer, it’s easy to see why they’re becoming so popular.
So if you’re looking for a way to ditch the minivan and save money on gas, an electric cargo bike is an option that deserves serious consideration.
Happy shopping. Remember, when it comes to cargo bikes…size does matter! 😉
