Finding the perfect mattress can seem like a daunting task.
But what if you didn't have to leave your house? Or try out countless mattresses at store after store?
Enter BedInABox, an online mattress company that promises comfortable sleep delivered right to your door.
In this detailed BedInABox review, I'll dig deep into my sleep testing experience to give you detailed feedback on how the BedInABox range of mattresses stacks up against the hundreds of other mattresses I've tested over the years.
So, is BedInABox a viable option for you? Let's find out together!
Before I get to the good stuff (the actual mattress reviews), I thought you might like to know my criteria for testing.
I thoroughly examine brands and products to confirm that they meet my high environmental and sustainability standards.
I tested each BedInABox mattress by evaluating factors such as build quality, materials, motion transfer, comfort, and firmness.
I also went beyond the mattresses and conducted a comprehensive assessment of the entire BedInABox brand, considering factors such as sustainability, ethical practices, shipping policies, sleep trial, warranty, and price.
✔ Sustainable and Certified Materials
✔ Breathable Organic Cover
✔ Excellent Support
I'll start with the most expensive of the BedInABox range for one simple reason…it's also the most eco-friendly and sustainable.
The BedInABox Eco-Lux mattress is a luxurious memory foam mattress crafted with renewable materials.
It features 11" of plush support and a breathable, moisture-wicking organic cotton cover.
With its CertiPUR-US, OEKO-TEX standard 100, and USDA Bio-Preferred certifications, you can rest easy knowing that the ECO-Lux mattress is free of harmful substances and contains 34% renewable content.
The medium-firm support was perfect for me. If you're a side or back sleeper, you'll love the mix of support of plushness offered by this mattress. It provides focused support where you need it most without sacrificing comfort.
The luxurious package is finished perfectly with a soft and breathable organic cotton cover (which allows airflow and helps regulate your temperature while you sleep).
With its renewable content certifications and eco-friendly initiatives, the BedInABox Eco-Lux is an excellent mattress choice if you're looking for a luxurious and sustainable foam mattress with superior comfort and support.
Yes, it's expensive for a boxed mattress (quality mattresses are always expensive). However, if you value sustainability and have the budget, this BedInABox mattress is for you.
I'll now review the rest of the BedInABox range in price order, starting with the Essential.
The 9" Essential mattress is an excellent value offering with gel memory foam that contoured to my body for enhanced spinal alignment.
Although, saying that, I feel that this is the softest of BedInABox's medium-firm offerings and might lead to some mild aches and pains long term if you don't respond well to soft mattresses.
As will all BedInABox mattresses, It's CertiPUR-US and OEKO-TEX standard 100 certified (not common with entry-level foam mattresses), so you know the foam used is of the highest quality, and the mattress as a whole is free of any dangerous chemicals.
The original is made with a dual-layer foam construction complete with a plush CoolRest® memory foam top layer that contoured my body well.
The mattress also has a breathable soft-knit cover with decent breathable qualities (but less breathable than the organic cover on the Eco-Lux).
I found the medium-firm support of the Original to be similar to the Eco-Lux. I got a good 8hrs sleep on this mattress and woke up feeling refreshed and recharged in the morning.
I'm not usually a fan of softer mattresses, but I have to admit I was pleasantly surprised by the Azul.
The cooling qualities of the foam and cover are excellent, and the triple-layer construction is soft to the touch and cloud-like to sleep on.
While it offers a decent level of support for a soft mattress…if, like me, you prefer a firmer mattress, then I recommend you spend your money on a different model.
However, the Azul will be perfect if you love super plush (almost marshmallow-like) mattresses.
✔ Certified Foam
✔ Cooling and Supporting Springs
✔ Suits All Sleep Positions
Now we get to the first hybrid offering from BedInABox (and also my third favorite model).
I found the hybrid construction of this mattress to provide the perfect balance of support and cooling. The 6" layer of coils cradled my body and offered excellent pressure relief. I also like how they act as little bellows and pump cool air around the mattress as I move around.
This medium firm mattress is right in the 'goldilocks zone' and offers good support and comfort no matter your preferred sleep position.
If you're a restless sleeper who tosses and turns all night, this is the one for you.
The Tranquillium mattress hit the spot for me in terms of support. It's firm and ultra-supportive. I slept like a log and woke up with zero aches and pains.
It's definitely my second favorite BedInABox mattress (after the excellent Eco-Lux).
The 12" triple-layer construction is wrapped in a soft, cooling, moisture-wicking Tencel cover.
While Tencel is considered a sustainable fabric (and it does an excellent job keeping me cool and sweat free all night), I still prefer the organic cotton cover of the Eco-Lux.
This mattress is worth serious consideration if you seek firm support and superior comfort.
It's designed with sophisticated materials that provide first-rate comfort and temperature regulation to ensure you get a good night's sleep every night.
The Dual Hybrid mattress from BedInABox features a state-of-the-art construction that provides medium firm comfort with superior support for all body types and sleeping styles.
This advanced construction achieves what it sets out to do…but at a cost…both in terms of $ and lbs!.
This is a pricey boxed mattress with some serious weight to it (the King clocks in at 150 lbs!).
You can feel the weight when moving the mattress around, which is something to bear in mind before buying (especially if you live alone or have mobility issues).
The cover was soft and kept me cool throughout the night. However, I do still prefer the organic cotton cover of the Eco-Lux.
To ensure you get the very best price (and don't miss any discounted deals), I recommend buying directly from BedInABox.com.

If you'd rather shop in person, you can visit a BedInABox showroom.
It's the Fall of 2004 in Johnson City, Tennessee.
A foam whiz, a digital marketer, and a machine builder with an audacious idea meet up over a cup of Joe. The crazy concept they're brewing? Shoving a queen-size mattress into a box small enough to ship via FedEx!
Fast forward eighteen months, and voila! The mattress-in-a-box industry is born, all thanks to the brainchild of Bill Bradley, the mastermind behind the innovation.
From the get-go, BedInABox was on a mission to pick comfortable foams that had the staying power to endure. And, together with NCFI, they fashioned two foams, SureAlign® and CoolRest®, that became the backbone of its product range.
Jump forward to August 2018, and things are taken up a notch when BedInABox merged operations with NCFI in their massive 100,000-square-foot facility in Mt. Airy, NC.
With this move, BedInABox became the only major US E-commerce mattress brand with foam pouring, mattress assembly, and customer service all under one roof.
So yes, they've been around the block longer than any other mattress-in-a-box company.
And yes, they're the only ones rolling up their sleeves to make their own foam layers.
Free carbon-neutral shipping is available on all orders.
BedInABox ships to the Contiguous US only. However, it offers free shipping to freight forwarders in the Contiguous US.
If you use a freight forwarder, you will be responsible for additional expenses, such as shipping, taxes, and duties to the final destination.
Please also note that orders outside the US are not eligible for the 120-night sleep trial.
All of BedInABox's foam mattresses are designed to provide maximum motion isolation, so you can rest easy knowing that any movements your partner makes in the bed won't disturb your sleep.
The Eco-Lux, Essential, Original, Azul, and Tranquillium models feature multiple layers that work together to absorb motion.
The two hybrid options (Original Hybrid and Dual Hybrid) are also great at motion absorption, thanks to their pocket coil construction. The coils act as tiny springs that can absorb motion for a more restful sleep.
However, my tests found a little more roll with the hybrids.
All BedInABox mattresses come with a 20-year warranty (except for the Essential, which comes with a 10-year warranty).
To maintain your BedInABox warranty, you must unbox and start using your mattress within 30 days of delivery.
BedInABox offers a 120-night sleep trial on all its mattresses.
If you're unsatisfied with the mattress after using it for 60 days, you can ask for an RMA number (Return Merchandise Authorization number) to initiate the mattress return process.
There is no restocking fee or reshipping fee on any returns.
You must request an RMA number between the 60th and 120th day.
When placing your order, please measure your bed frame or platform to ensure you choose the correct size. Ordering and returning multiple times is not sustainable.
You can also return BedInABox foundations within 120 days, but you'll be charged a $50 shipping fee and a 20% restocking fee. To be eligible for a refund, the foundations must be clean and returned with all pieces intact.
Pillows, bed frames, adjustable foundations, sheets, pads/protectors, and toppers cannot be refunded or returned during the 120-night trial period.
BedInABox manufactures its foam in-house and can control the product's quality every step of the way.
This attention to detail and dedication to quality comes across in the look and feel of its mattresses (across all price points).
BedInABox has perfected its memory foam recipes over many years and now produces foams that are difficult to beat in terms of performance vs. cost.
I also love that all BedInABox mattresses are CertiPUR-US and OEKO-TEX certified (more on this below).
Using organic cotton and Tencel to replace traditional cotton on some models is also good to see.
BedInABox participates in various schemes that point to the company caring about environmental issues.
Its mattresses are also certified by some leading green labels to give you extra peace of mind that your purchase is eco-friendly and non-toxic.
BedInABox mattresses are mid-priced compared to competitors, making them an attractive option for eco-friendly consumers looking for value.
Depending on which mattress model you choose, you can expect to pay between $849 and $1,799 for a queen-sized mattress.
Not sure if a BedInABox mattress is right for you?
Don't worry. You still have plenty of other options.
The following articles will help narrow down exactly which mattress will be perfect for you:
I thought finishing with a recap of what I like and dislike about BedInABox might be helpful.
To clean a BedInABox mattress spot, clean with cold water and mild detergent and vacuum as needed. Check out Arabella's memory foam mattress cleaning guide for more cleaning tips. For added protection, consider using a mattress protector.
No, BedInABox mattresses do not need a box spring. You can place the mattress on almost any flat surface, bed frame, or foundation.
No, you should not flip your BedInABox mattress. Each mattress model has specific layers in a specific order. By flipping your mattress, you're changing the order of the layers (which will negatively impact the performance). However, rotating your mattress 180° every few months will help even out wear and extend its life.
The most popular mattress size for couples in the US is Queen. It offers plenty of space for two people (without taking up too much room) and fits most bedroom spaces.
Foam mattresses are not necessarily better than hybrid mattresses. It all depends on your individual needs and preferences. A hybrid mattress is an excellent choice if you want the contouring of memory foam with a bit of bounce (from the springs). An all-foam mattress (no springs) typically offers more pressure relief and motion isolation than a hybrid.
BedInABox offers an impressive range of mattress options to suit a variety of budgets and sleep styles.
The presence of CertiPUR-US and OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certifications on every mattress model is very reassuring, and the 120-night sleep trial gives you plenty of time to decide if the mattress will be right for you long-term.
The excellent Eco-Lux mattress is also the first memory foam mattress that has earned USDA Bio-Preferred certification.
BedInABox is definitely a brand worth considering if you're looking for fair-priced and certified safe hybrid and memory foam mattresses.
