22 Organic Eco-Friendly Mattresses For A Perfect Nights Sleep Guaranteed

Those of you who have read my Best Organic Crib Mattress and Best Organic Mattress Topper articles will know that I might have a bit of a ‘thing’ for Avocado mattresses.

So, when I set out to find the best eco-friendly adult mattress, I was convinced that Avocado would be hard to beat again.

It turned out I was correct, sort of! Avocado was hard to beat, but beat it was!

Later in this article, I’ll discuss what I was looking for when choosing my overall winner. Before I do, I would like to cut to the chase and announce the winner.

They Say: The Botanical Bliss® organic latex mattress is handcrafted in the USA, with the finest quality GOLS certified organic latex, GOTS certified organic cotton and GOTS certified organic wool. Recommended by orthopaedic specialists and chiropractors for its luxurious comfort, soothing pressure relief and superior support.

We Say: This mattress ticked all the boxes for me. Organic materials, put together in a certified organic factory in the U.S.

The sheer volume of certifications that come with his mattress is impressive and reassuring.

Eco-credentials are great, of course, but comfort is also vital when choosing a mattress. This is where the Botanical Bliss excels. It’s a total dream to dream on!

PlushBeds do several different eco-friendly mattresses, and the Botanic Bliss is very much a flagship, premium product. However, in my eyes, it’s worth every cent.

Plushbeds use three primary materials to craft this mattress (organic cotton, organic New Zealand wool, and Dunlop latex). The entire organic mattress is free from mercury, lead, heavy metals, chlorofluorocarbons, chloroform, cyanide, and PBDE flame retardants.

When choosing an overall winner from a vast array of contenders, I had to consider which mattresses would meet the needs of most people. This is another tick for the Botanic Bliss. The choice of size, firmness, and height options means whatever your individual needs are; the Botanical Bliss has you covered.

My one gripe would be the sleep trial. For me, 100-nights is plenty to decide if you love the mattress or not. However, the fact you have to return it at your cost or pay a $149 collection fee might be a sticking point for some people.

All the positives far outweigh this negative for me. This is a sublime mattress from an incredibly ethically run company (I also highly recommend their wool comforter).

One final note about the price. I always quote the RRP, excluding any deals that are on at the time. This is to give a fair comparison across all brands, whether currently on sale or not. PlushBeds often has sales with significant discounts. If this is the organic mattress you go for, make sure you check to see if there are any upcoming sales before buying.

What To Consider When Choosing An Eco-Friendly Mattress

The vast range of options now available when shopping for an adult mattress in the U.S. is staggering.

To help you narrow down the field, I would advise looking out for the following:

Organic And Natural Materials

We spend nearly a third of our lives sleeping, so it’s essential to ensure that our mattress does not contain a cocktail of toxic chemicals.

A layer of wool, for example, will make a mattress flame retardant without using any nasty chemicals.

Many mattress brands now offer fully organic mattress options. These mattresses are made with the highest quality organic materials and processes.

Organic mattresses can be pretty pricey. That is why mattresses made from natural materials are also a popular option. They help dramatically reduce toxins in the mattress without the hefty price tag of being fully organic.

Ecolabels And Certifications

A high-quality eco-friendly mattress from a reputable and sustainable company will come with many ecolabels and certifications attached to prove its green credentials.

The main two to look out for are Global Organic Latex Standard and Global Organic Textile Standard. Global Organic Latex Standard (GOLS) certifies that any latex in your mattress has passed strict safety and organic tests. Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) is very similar to GOLS but certifies the textiles in your mattress (organic cotton covers, for example), not the latex.

You need to be on your guard to ensure that the certifications are genuine and the company has the right to use them and are not greenwashing.

These are two big topics that we’ve already covered elsewhere. You can read more about ecolabels and certificates here and greenwashing here.

Eco-Friendly And Sustainable Companies

A mattress could be stuffed with the finest organic materials on the planet, but it would all mean nothing if the factory making it uses unethical practices such as child, or forced, labor.

Researching the company behind the mattress is just as important as analyzing the mattress itself.

Made In USA

Where possible, buy a mattress made in the U.S.

Domestic companies have to adhere to strict regulations. This helps ensure that your new mattress meets all the eco-friendly credentials you’re looking for.

Buy Direct

Buying direct from the manufacturer can help reduce the cost of your new eco-friendly mattress.

Another 21 Eco-Friendly Mattresses To Suit Every Budget

This is such a crowded marketplace that I felt the need to test an array of mattresses to meet various needs (budget, sleep style, weight, eco-friendliness, etc.).

So, what started as a ‘top 10’ quickly got slightly out of control. If I hadn’t reigned myself in, this could have easily been a ‘top 100’.

I’ve tested and researched every fine detail of the best eco-friendly mattresses available.

They’re listed below in no particular order. The reason for this is I’m mindful that people’s requirements vary wildly. What one person considers a deal-breaker might not even be on another person’s radar.

What you have below is another 21 of the best eco-friendly mattresses to suit all budgets and requirements. I hope you find it helpful.

They Say: 100% CERTIFIED ORGANIC MATTRESS. The Avocado Green Mattress is GREENGUARD Gold Certified — and made with natural and organic materials, including GOLS organic certified latex from our co-owned farmers' collectives and a co-owned processing facility in India, operating under the USDA National Organic Program; GOTS organic and OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certified wool from a farmers' society we also co-own; and GOTS certified organic cotton.

Our non-toxic green bed combines the finest natural cushioning with an internal, zoned, pressure-point support system for proper back support and extended durability.

We Say: Ok. So I know I just said that this list is in no particular order. However, the Avocado Green Mattress is my unofficial runner-up.

Avocado as a company is right up there with PlusBeds in terms of green credentials. They own their entire supply chain and meet the most stringent standards for ecology and social responsibility.

The Avocado Green Mattress is handmade in California with 100% percent GOTS certified organic cotton, wool, and GOLS certified latex. It’s GREENGUARD Gold certified for low emissions.

There is very little motion transfer with this mattress. This means if the person next to you is a fidgety sleeper, you won’t be disturbed.

The sleep trial night and return cost are better than the overall winner. So, if that’s something of concern to you, then this might be a better option.

They Say: Our #1 selling dual-coil mattress blends the durability and responsive feel of an innerspring with the cushioned comfort of eco-friendly foams and a plush Euro pillow top.

Plush Euro pillow top gives contouring support for cushioned comfort and pressure relief where you need it most. Patented spinal zone technology and CertiPUR-US® certified memory foam keep your spine in healthy alignment to reduce pressure on your lower back. Recommended by leading U.S. chiropractors and awarded a seal of approval by the Congress of Chiropractic State Associations.

We Say: Saatva has built a reputation as a disruptor in the mattress industry. They offer a range of spring, latex, and memory foam options to suit all shapes, sizes, and sleeping styles.

My favorite is their mid-range offering, the latex hybrid.

The latex is designed with five firmness zones to provide the exact level of comfort needed from your head to your toes.

I was particularly impressed to discover that coils are thicker towards the edge of the mattress. This offers additional support when getting on and off the mattress.

They Say: The Serenade Organic Mattress offers contouring comfort and a universal design that appeals to just about every sleeper. Built with a comfy layer of organic latex and supportive encased coils, the Serenade comes in two firmness options so you can choose your ideal amount of support.

Made without harmful chemicals, the Serenade provides a healthier night’s sleep to leave you feeling refreshed and relaxed each morning. Its organic design eliminates the need for flame retardants while still meeting all federal flammability standards. With the Serenade, you'll be asleep in no time.

We Say: Naturepedic is one of the best green mattress brands in the U.S.

Their organic mattresses are constructed by Amish craftsmen in their GOTS certified factory in Chagrin Falls, Ohio.

It’s not just the factory that’s certified organic. The entire finished mattress is also 100% organic. You will find GOTS certified organic cotton and certified organic wool throughout this mattress.

Naturepedic goes beyond the minimum requirements for organic certification. It’s a company-wide mission to strive for a higher standard.

These quality organic components come together to make the Naturepedic Serenade Organic Mattress seriously comfy and eco-friendly.

They Say: Better For You And The Planet. Designed for performance, the Happsy mattress delivers on its promise of a better night's sleep through innovative technology and creative use of natural materials. It happens to also be a mattress with a conscience - designed to make a positive impact on the environment. It features certified organic, sustainably harvested and environmentally-friendly materials, while eliminating the harsh chemicals, foams and adhesives used by conventional mattress brands.

Its organic design is not only better for the planet, but also provides excellent support, contouring to your every curve and dissipating heat for a more comfortable night's sleep. Finally, a mattress you can feel good about...

We Say: The Happsy Organic Mattress is made without glues, adhesives, or flame retardants.

It’s shipped to you vacuum-packed inside a bag inside a box. I’m a man of simple pleasures, and watching a ‘mattress in a box’ slowly expand never fails to put a smile on my face.

The pleasure doesn’t stop there! The mattress was lovely to sleep on and offered more than enough support once fully expanded (this took around 30 minutes).

The 120-night sleep trial and free returns policy offer great peace of mind that you can test out the mattress for yourself and return it if you’re not 100% satisfied.

If you’re a side sleeper or just like a plusher sleep surface, you might want to consider adding the options mattress topper to your order. This costs between $249 (Twin) and $499 (Cal King).

They Say: The best mattress for better sleep shouldn’t contain scary or potentially harmful chemicals. The Organica by Amerisleep® contains natural and organic materials and with its responsive cushioning and pain-relieving support, the Organica has a balanced medium feel and works comfortably for side, back, and combination sleepers.

Not to mention, every Organica is carefully handcrafted to deliver rejuvenating sleep for the next two decades. We took out harmful plastics, adhesives, and questionable chemicals so you can sleep soundly. Made with materials certified by GOTS, OEKO-TEK, the Rainforest Alliance, and eco-INSTITUT. Every Organica purchase supports sustainable farming and local manufacturing.

We Say: Amerisleep is probably best known for its range of memory foam mattresses (AS2, AS3, and AS5).

The Organica is their latest offering and the only Amerisleep model made from natural and organic components.

The top layer consists of a 1” baton of Joma wool. This acts as a fire barrier and temperature regulator. This is encased in gots certified organic cotton.

Under the Joma wool is a 3” comfort layer of natural Talalay latex, making the Organica ideal for people who enjoy a level of ‘give’ from their mattress, but not necessarily a full hug. The Talalay latex level is especially good at relieving pressure from the body, regardless of your sleeping position.

The Joma wool is ethically sourced, and the latex is Rainforest Alliance and Eco-Institut certified.

Next comes the coils. 8” of them, to be precise. With excellent firm edge support.

The bottom layer is 1” of Dunlop latex for stability.

The mattress comes with a 100-night sleep trial and a 20-year warranty for peace of mind.

They Say: Inside every Awara you’ll find: A plush Euro Top, covered in smooth organic cotton and soft 100% organic New Zealand wool. 4 inches of Rainforest Alliance certified natural Dunlop latex. A premium coil support core of individually wrapped 9” coils. A beautiful cotton blend cover with 4 sturdy handles wrapping the supportive base layer. We chose every material with your sleep comfort in mind. So you get a naturally comfortable sleep. All at an affordable price.

We Say: If you’ve always wanted to try a luxury hybrid mattress in a box, but think you’ll need a whole year to decide if it’s right for you or not, Awara have you covered.

You get a 365-night trial to - literally - sleep on it.

Decided on night 364 that the Awara Organic Luxury Hybrid Mattress is not for you? No worries, simply let them know, and they will help you donate it to someone local in need and refund you in full.

The cooling properties of this mattress are impressive. I’d recommend it to anyone who sleeps hot.

They Say: Our most luxurious mattress, the Natural Escape, is the perfect choice for adults. Layers of breathable organic latex and an upgraded innerspring offer added lumbar support, proper spinal alignment and pressure point relief.

We Say: My Green Mattress is a brand I’ve had my eye on for a while and was excited to test out.

I was not disappointed!

This is a high-quality eco-friendly mattress with breathable Dunlop latex, a moisture-wicking, fire retardant, temperature-regulating wool layer, and a pocketed coil system.

I was partially impressed with the zoned pocket coils, making this mattress perfect for couples. There was very little motion transfer.

The top end of the mattress consists of an organic cotton cover and comfort layers made of natural wool and organic Dunlop latex. These materials offer moderately close conforming and pressure relief. The mattress also isolates and minimizes a good amount of motion transfer and produces very little noise, which can be beneficial for couples.

My Green Mattress ship for free to the contiguous U.S. and offer a 20-year warranty.

You also get a 120-night sleep trial to test the mattress out in your own home. If you decide it’s not for you, My Green Mattress will refund in full once you prove that the unwanted mattress has been donated to charity.

This is a quality mattress made in Illinois that you should consider if you have a restless partner who keeps disturbing you when they toss and turn.

They Say: Don't sweat it - each mattress comes with a natural cotton cover, hygroscopic wool, and breathable Talalay latex in order to increase airflow and keep you cool. We use premium materials from nature designed with specific densities to create the right pressure relief and contour for your body. It's all about finding the perfect natural comfort. Free of any polyurethane based foams and harsh chemicals, we make sure each mattress is sustainably sourced with your complete safety in mind.

We Say: This Birch mattress is another that has excellent cooling properties and is a fantastic option for those who sleep hot.

The individually wrapped steel coils are made in the USA and offer decent comfort, support, and pressure relief.

In terms of pricing, I would rate this Birch mattress as a mid-level offering and definitely worth the price tag.

Free shipping is available to all 50 states, and you get a 100-night sleep trial. If you decide to keep the mattress, you’re covered by a 25-year warranty.

They Say: Our #1 best-selling luxury hybrid mattress. 9 layers, cooling gel made with BioFoam®, GOTS organic certified wool and cotton, and nearly 3,000 coils! Perfect for all sleeper types. Medium-soft feel. 100% carbon offset. Made in Los Angeles.

We Say: Mrs. M swears by her Brentwood Home Buckwheat Yoga Bolster Cushion, and she inspired me to also take a look at their range of mattresses.

Brentwood Home is an eco-friendly brand that has been promoting healthy lifestyles since 1987.

I chose to test their best-selling luxury hybrid mattress, the Oceano.

The SleepFoundation voted the Oceano the Best Luxury Mattress in 2020, and I can see why.

The combination of high-quality coils and latex produces a luxurious medium-soft sleep surface.

This eco-friendly mattress was slightly too soft for my liking, but the Oceano is worth consideration if you prefer a soft and luxurious mattress.

The open cell, gel-infused, 20% plant-based BioFoam did a fantastic job at regulating temperature, so this is another mattress I would recommend for hot sleepers.

You have a whole year to test this mattress out at home and decide if you want to keep it or not. If you do decide to keep it, it’s covered by a 25-year warranty.

They Say: Hand-Quilted Celliant® Fiber Top helps improve your overall well-being. Hypersoft Cooling-gel Foam delivers a cool, cloud-like feeling every night. Premium Comfort Foam adapts to all body types and sleep positions. Responsive Transition Foam offers airflow and pressure relief. Edge Coil System for superior edge support alignment. High-Density Support Foam provides long-lasting durability.

We Say: The six-layer Bear Hybrid Mattress intrigued me because of its use of Celliant FDA Determined Infrared Yarn Technology.

According to the Bear website, “Celliant is a revolutionary, patented technology that has been clinically proven to enhance tissue oxygen levels and improve athletic performance, sleep quality, health and wellness”.

As a keen cyclist and all-around amateur athlete, this technology is very appealing.

I’ve not slept on this mattress for long enough to comment on the effectiveness of Celliant just yet, but I will revisit this article at a later date and update you.

In general terms, though, thanks to the cooling gel memory foam, the Bear Hybrid Mattress gave me a good night’s sleep during a scorching spell of weather.

So, at the risk of starting to sound like a broken record, this is another mattress I would recommend for hot sleepers.

They Say: Our first all foam latex mattress (without springs) — our most sustainable mattress yet! Featuring a patent-pending design that delivers ideal comfort, motion isolation, and responsiveness. 100% organic certified, non-toxic, and biodegradable. 9 inches of organic latex, plus organic cotton and organic wool, 3 zones, 4 handles, bounce dampening layers, and a low profile. Handmade in Los Angeles. Our firmest mattress.

We Say: Two Avocado recommendations on the same list. Maybe I do have a ‘thing’ for them after all!

I had to include this mattress in the list. It’s the first mattress Avocado has produced that does not contain any coils.

Avocado also states that this is the most eco-friendly mattress they’ve ever produced, which is quite something considering the impeccable eco-credentials of this company.

This firm latex mattress still feels luxurious and is covered by Avocados 365-night trial and 25-year warranty.

They Say: Copper foam is just better than your average memory foam. Why? Variable Support is one reason. Copper gel in the foam reacts to increased pressure with a firming response, so it stays soft and huggy overall, but provides ample support around deep compression areas where you need it most.

The copper particles that make up the copper gel in our memory foam are super conductive. This conductivity helps carry heat away from your body faster which results in a much cooler sleep experience than you get with old-timey conventional memory foams. Copper is naturally antimicrobial, and the copper gel in our memory foam naturally condenses under pressure. When you lay on the mattress, the copper compresses together to form an antimicrobial barrier that fights odor-causing bacteria and keeps your mattress more fresh.

We Say: I wanted to test out this mattress for two main reasons:

  1. Cooper Foam: The copper in the foam is antibacterial and is supposed to make the sleeping surface cool. I don’t really have any way of verifying the antibacterial claim. However, I can confirm that this mattress is cool to sleep on. Some of the hybrids sleep cooler, but for a foam mattress, the sleeping temperature is comfortable.
  2. Dual firmness: This mattress comes with two firmness options (soft and firm). Simply flip the mattress over to whichever firmness option you prefer. The soft side was too soft for me; the firm side was spot on.

This is a fantastic eco-friendly mattress option for anyone who doesn’t yet know if they prefer a soft or firm mattress.

Thanks to the 120-night trial, you can test both sides of the mattress in the comfort of your bedroom and decide which one works for you.

This mattress comes in a box and takes a couple of hours to decompress fully.

This was one of the lighter mattresses I tested (due to no coils), so easy to move around on your own.

They Say: Wake up delighted to take on the day with this dreamy mix of memory foam and innerspring coils that give you the best sleep of your life, every night.

We Say: The 365-night trial and the lifetime warranty tempted me into testing the DreamCloud Luxury Hybrid Mattress.

DreamCloud is a New York-based outfit offering some of the plushest mattresses on the market.

I tested the entry-level version, which was incredibly luxurious, so do not doubt that the more premium options (Premier and Premier Rest) are even more so.

For me, the selling points of this mattress is the quilted foam and cashmere top layer and the price.

The top layer is so soft that I skipped the sheet for the first night and kept moving around to feel the softness on my skin. Weird? No, I didn't think so! 😉

The price of this eco-friendly mattress is pretty hard to beat also. At the time of publishing, you can get a queen, sheet, protector, and two pillows for $999. All delivered to your door within five business days.

They Say: The Eco Terra Mattress is handcrafted with pure, 100% natural latex; a fabric-encased coil core, for optimal spinal support; and a soft, organic cotton cover, created with breathable organic cotton, and pure organic wool. No chemicals. No polyurethane. No toxins.

We Say: I initially tested the Eco Terra Mattress because of its lower-than-average price point.

By keeping as much of the production in-house as possible (it’s handcrafted in Los Angeles), Eco Terra has managed to produce an eco-friendly and wallet-friendly mattress.

There are two firmness options available:

Medium: “Blends support with softness. Medium is recommended for side sleepers, lighter weight sleepers, and anyone who needs extra relief from pressure point pain in the shoulders, hips, and knees”.

Medium-Firm: “Delivers firm support with enough "give" for comfort. Medium-Firm is popular with back sleepers, stomach sleepers, and larger adults”.

I tested the medium-firm option and found it to still be a little on the soft side. If you like a firm mattress, this might not be the brand for you.

The 90-night sleet trail is one of the shortest on the list, but they do offer free returns and free shipping. The 15-year warranty will also give peace of mind.

All things considered, this is a fantastic lower price point option for those who like a softer feeling mattress.

They Say: Hybrid design blends the support of coils with the pressure relief of Talalay latex. OEKO-TEX100 certified Talalay latex that’s sustainably tapped and naturally breathable. 100% organic cotton and sustainable New Zealand wool. 5-zoned individually wrapped innerspring support system. Baby safe certified & hypoallergenic.

We Say: My youngest daughter is a side-sleeper, so I was keen to test the EcoCloud with her because WinkBeds specify on their website that this mattress is designed for side-sleepers.

A top layer of organic cotton and New Zealand wool covers a 4” ventilated Talalay latex comfort layer.

Next comes the innerspring system with edge support.

It got the thumbs up from my youngest (and I found it comfortable too) so, if you're a side-sleeper, this might be one to try.

You get 120 nights to make your mind up, and a lifetime warranty covers your purchase.

They Say: Spindle is the organic mattress you’ve always wanted, at a price that makes sense. 100% Organic Latex, Organic Cotton, and Organic Wool. No chemical flame retardants. No synthetic rubber. No harmful VOCs. Finally! A natural latex bed you can feel comfortable about, while sleeping comfortable.

We Say: As far as natural latex mattresses are concerned, the Spindle is pretty innovative.

They have tried to solve the firmness dilemma by including three different interchangeable latex layers.

This is a neat solution that makes the Spindle Organic Latex Mattress suitable for pretty much any style of sleeper with any firmness preference. Simply swap the order of the layers around until you find the perfect firmness combination for you.

All this flexibility comes at a price, though. The Spindle Organic Latex Mattress is pretty pricey.

I also like the sound of their 25-Year Comfort Life Program, allowing you to trade in your old latex layers for brand new ones at 30% off the regular asking price.

This softens the blow of the high RRP, to be fair, because it gives you the flexibility to extend the lifespan significantly in the future at a discount price.

If you feel this might be the mattress for you, the 365-night trial period gives you a full year to make your mind up properly.

They Say: Ultimate Comfort For Every Sleeper. How is that possible, you wonder? Nectar's memory foam mattress layers have the ideal ratio of softness, firmness, and support most people want. It's a delicate balance, but we got it right.

We Say: Nectar are relatively new players in the eco-friendly mattress in a box market, but boy are they trying to make waves!

The Nectar Mattress is their entry-level offering and the one I tested.

For the price, it's a wonderfully comfortable mattress. In fact, it sleeps as well as some of the mattresses that cost considerably more.

They Say: Supremely Comfortable and Supportive, Naturally. Organic latex, cotton and wool work together to create the perfect, natural sleep system. Organic latex is "springy," supportive, responsive and cool sleeping. Organic cotton fabric is naturally beautiful and breathable, while also being durable. Wool fiber within the quilted cover helps you sleep cool by wicking moisture away from your body and acts as a natural flame barrier in place of fire retardant chemicals.

We Say: The certified organic mattress comes in three firmness options so there should be something for everyone here.

At the behest of Mrs. M, I opted to test the plush option. She prefers a softer sleep surface, but we always go for a firmer mattress due to my weak back from an old college football injury.

It did feel luxurious, and I slept well. However, I could only do two nights before my back started to ache.

All Metta mattresses are handmade to exacting standards in a California-based Eco-Factory owned by their parent company OMI.

In the same way as the Spindle Organic Latex Mattress, the Metta has separate independent latex layers that you can swap around and exchange to get the firmness perfect for you.

The Spindle has three layers, and the Metta has two.

If you don't like the comfort of the mattress, Meta will send you different latex layers of your choice and allow you to return the original latex laters, free of charge.

If you still don't like the comfort level after your comfort exchange, you can return it for free for a full refund.

You have 120-nights to do all this.

This is a top-notch organic mattress with great flexibility in terms of swapping around the layers. However, if your back is not quite right like me, I would say steer clear of the plush option.

They Say: Live and Sleep’s Luxury Mattress is a comfortable medium balanced memory foam mattress that can provide you with the comfort needed for the best sleep experience every night. You don’t have to worry about any discomfort at any point, with mattresses built using the best materials and designs. Here are some of the features that set our mattresses apart.

We Say: This mattress initially made the list because they donate a portion of every sale to the National Alliance to End Homelessness. I’m not sure how much they donate because it's not listed on the website. I’ve reached out to them for clarification.

The foam in this mattress is CertiPUR-US and OEKO-TEX certified.

It was the warmest sleeping mattress I tested and slightly too soft for my liking. The Elite is firmer...and cheaper!

If you're looking for a good quality eco-friendly mattress on a budget, this might be the one for you.

You get 100 nights (75 for the Elite and 30 for the Classic) to test out the mattress at home. If you decide it’s not for you, you can return free of charge for a full refund.

They Say: Our 100% natural latex mattress is made with the finest quality natural latex, organic cotton and pure, natural wool. It is flippable with 2 firmnesses in 1 latex mattress, for luxurious comfort and superior support. Certified by GOTS, Oeko-Tex Standard 100 and Eco-Institut for purity.

We Say: The Latex For Less Latex Mattress is a no-frills offer at a decent price point.

There are not multiple options and add ons to confuse you. They simply offer one mattress with two firmness options. One side is firm, and the other is medium.

The medium side uses Talalay latex, and the firm side uses Dunlop latex.

Natural wool layers are used to make the mattress fire retardant and regulate temperature.

This mattress slept warmer than most but cooler than the Live And Sleep Luxury Memory Foam Mattress.

They Say: The FLIP mattress by Nest Bedding is an Amazon-exclusive mattress that offers our customers a unique experience. This luxury hybrid, foam and coil, mattress is 10 inches tall and comes with both medium feel on the top and firm on the bottom, allowing sleepers to try both sides for optimal comfort. Take the guess work out of buying a mattress online by purchasing the FLIP mattress.

Made in the USA; you can trust the quality and support American workers. From the trusted folks at Nest Bedding. One of the pioneers of the online mattress movement, we have years of experience making mattresses. This mattress will work well with any sleep system, box spring, bed frame or adjustable base. A luxury look and feel for a budget price, specifically made for our Amazon customers.

We Say: I thought long and hard about including this mattress on the list because it has the least amount going for it in terms of the eco-friendliness of all the mattresses I tested.

However, in the end, I decided it deserved a place on the list because it offers a great alternative to those on a tight budget who still want to be as eco-friendly as possible.

This is not a cheap slab of off-gassing foam. It’s a well-made hybrid mattress that combines a durable Caliber Coil system with CertiPUR-US certified cooling Visco Gel foam.

This is a no-frills mattress, but still worthy of consideration if organic is out of your price range.

The 30-night sleep trial is rather short, but should still give you enough time to decide if you prefer the firm side or the medium side. Firm for me all day (surprise, surprise!).

If you decide it's not for you within 30 days you need to donate it to a local charity and then upload proof to Nest via the returns portal on Amazon. All very straightforward and hassle-free.

A CertiPUR-US, dual firmness mattress, starting at just $359? That's a pretty impressive price point!

Frequently Asked Questions

What Is The Most Environmentally Friendly Mattress?

The U.S. adult mattress market is now so big it’s impossible to pick one. To be on the right track to getting an environmentally friendly mattress, you need to ensure it’s made sustainably, using ethically sourced and chemical-free materials. Anything from Avocado or PlushBeds is an excellent place to start the search.

What Mattress Is The Healthiest To sleep?

If health is your primary consideration, I would say go 100% organic.

Are Memory Foam Mattresses Bad For The Environment?

With their high level of off-gassing and big carbon footprints, old memory foam mattresses were a bit of an environmental disaster. Newer models from reputable and sustainable companies that tread much more gently on mother earth are now commonplace in the market. I have recommended some in this article.

What Is The Difference Between Talalay And Dunlop Latex?

Talalay latex is produced by filling a closed mold with liquid latex rubber. The mold is then frozen, and carbon dioxide gas is added. This result is a softer latex ideal for mattress toppers and mattresses. Dunlop latex, developed in 1929, is firmer, heavier, and more durable.

The Final Word

Well. There we have it. It was a mammoth task to review the 22 best eco-friendly mattresses in the U.S. across all price ranges and needs.

There were many more mattresses I would have included in the list, but my team was already having kittens about how long I was taking to get through the review process.

It was undoubtedly a labor of love. I hope you found it helpful. If you feel strongly that I’ve missed an obvious contender, then please drop me a line. I love talking about all things green sleep-related.

My one main piece of advice would be to spend as much as you can afford. If you can afford to go 100% organic, then you should. It’s better for the planet, and it’s better for your health.

However, don’t stress if organic is out of your price range. There are some very healthy and comfy ‘natural’ options also available these days.
