Organic clothing is becoming increasingly popular as consumers become more aware of the environmental impact of fast fashion.
Organic farming methods use far less water and energy, and don't use any toxic chemicals which can harm both the environment and your health.
Today I want to introduce you to some of the best organic clothing brands that prioritize sustainability without sacrificing style - and at surprisingly affordable prices.
Perfect for anyone who wants to look good while doing good.
✔ GOTS-Certified Organic Cotton
✔ Fair Trade-Certified Factories
✔ Net Carbon Neutral
They Say: We don't just claim sustainability, we certify it. We proudly partner with Fair Trade USA, Global Organic Textile Standard and SimpliZero to ensure our products, and our processes, support both people and planet.
We Say: PACT uses the tagline of Earth's Favorite, and while the planet technically doesn't get a vote - I do - and this is certainly one of my favorite organic cotton clothing brands.
With certified organic and sustainable materials, net zero carbon footprint thanks to a partnership with SimpliZero, and a transparent and ethical supply chain supporting fair labor practices, PACT has all the bases covered.
In another move that I really like, PACT has eliminated plastic packaging, replacing it with their sustainable, compostable, and FSC-certified Vela paper bag.
But what about the clothing? Is it any good? In a word - YES.
PACT offers a range of clothing for women, men, and kids (we already recommended them as a top organic baby clothing brand), as well as bedding and bath towels. All of which is organic, sustainable, and of the highest quality!
I loved the leggings and bra tops, but my testing hasn't finished there! I'm spoiled for choice and I'm so happy with what I already have that I intend to go back for more.
What's great about PACT Apparel is that, even though their eco-credentials are superb, the price range is not especially high. This is affordable organic clothing without compromising on ethics or quality.
✔ 100% Organic Cotton Clothing
✔ Eco-Friendly Dyes
✔ Zero Waste Manufacturing
They Say: All our garments are made from 100% organic cotton, which means cotton that is grown without genetically modified seeds. Organic cotton can be grown with the help of natural rainwater, requiring no harmful chemicals in the process.
We Say: Colorful Standard makes the majority of their clothing range from 100% organic cotton.
They offer a range of organic basics for men and women, with a focus on bright, vibrant colors that really give their garments that wow factor.
I tested a unisex zip hoodie and an organic cotton t-shirt and was very impressed. Both garments came pre-washed so there was no issue with shrinkage. They feel soft to the touch but durable and heavyweight, and they look and feel far more expensive than they are.
Colorful Standard is a sustainable clothing brand using zero-waste manufacturing methods, environmentally friendly dyes, and ethical labor. They also use recycled packaging.
If you're looking for sustainable and ethical clothing that helps you stand out from the crowd, then Colorful Standard is definitely recommended.
✔ GOTS Certified Organic Cotton
✔ High Thread Count
✔ Made in the USA
They Say: Our t-shirts are handcrafted in the USA using fair trade and sustainable practices. Our premium organic cotton uses 70% less water than conventional cotton. Our workers receive fair wages and excellent treatment. And a percentage of every purchase goes towards cleaning up our oceans, providing safe drinking water, or planting trees.
We Say: Looking for simple, classic organic basics that look great and don't harm the planet? The Classic T-Shirt Company is the place to go!
As the name suggests, they only do t-shirts. But they do them very well, and with the highest environmental standards.
The Classic T-Shirt Company believes that GOTS Certified organic cotton is better than recycled cotton, and they use it for their entire range. The high thread count makes the garments feel soft and durable, and the affordable price range makes them accessible to everyone.
All t-shirts are handcrafted in California, and come pre-washed and pre-shrunk, so the fit you get is the fit you'll keep!
✔ GOTS Certified Organic Cotton
✔ Ethical Supply Chain
✔ Modern Minimalist Style
They Say: We produce elegant garments that stand up to the highest standards of design and sustainability.
We Say: Here's a stylish and elegant organic clothing brand for women that I think you'll love. There are some outstanding designs here.
In GRAMMAR's white Verb Shirt, I have found a shirt that I really love. So much so, that I went and bought a second one in sky blue!
I found the attention to detail in the construction, such as the flat felled and narrow French seams, really make a difference in comfort.
It's also good to know that the size chart was accurate and that the fabric feels just right. Buying it in multiple colors is always a good sign of a great purchase, and receiving compliments on my new white shirt is always a confidence booster.
The GRAMMAR range is made in New York City from 100% GOTS-Certified Organic Cotton. They produce locally in small batches to minimize waste, and support local artisans to ensure the highest environmental and quality standards every time.
✔ Organic & Recycled Materials
✔ GOTS Approved
✔ Fair Trade Certified
They Say: The first brand founded on a total commitment to sustainability. We are driven by a passion for responsible action, courageous change, and great clothes.
We Say: Outerknown is a sustainable fashion brand that has established itself as a leader in eco-friendly clothing. The company was founded by Kelly Slater, a world champion surfer.
Outerknown's mission is to create effortless, casual beach styles for women and men rooted in sustainability. The brand focuses on producing high-quality products that are environmentally friendly and socially responsible.
You'll find a range of organic basics and styles for women, men, and now kids as well. There's also a second-hand section where you can buy pre-loved Outerknown items, or sell your own.
Outerknown is at the forefront of the sustainable fashion industry and I personally love the mix of organic materials and casual, laid-back styles. Check out their website to see the latest range for yourself.
✔ GOTS Certified Organic Cotton Clothing & Swimwear
✔ Biodegradable Mailers
✔ Made in the USA
They Say: We use eco-conscious textiles like organic cotton, linen, recycled cotton, and Tencel®. All materials are certified to meet the global Oeko-Tex standard for safe textiles.
We Say: If you're a regular reader, you'll know that Vitamin A Swimwear is one of our favorite sustainable clothing brands here at TheRoundup.
They've already been featured in our sustainable swimwear guide, as well as in my lists of the best upcycled fashion and recycled fashion brands.
As well as using recycled polyester and nylon, Vitamin A makes use of a range of other natural materials including certified organic cotton.
I've waxed lyrical about the stunning quality of the Vitamin A range before, but I'm always happy to do it again! This is not just swimwear (although that is amazing) but a whole range of casual women's clothing and accessories, made from sustainable fabrics.
Vitamin A is slow fashion at its best, and I love it!
✔ High Quality Sustainable Basics
✔ 100% Carbon Neutral
✔ Affordable Price Range
They Say: By design, our impact is radically lower than other sustainable brands. We use only USA grown organic cotton and all of our partnering mills and factories are in the USA. Harvest & Mill’s unique manufacturing process minimizes our impact while creating positive change in our communities.
We Say: For simple, essential organic basics for men and women, Harvest & Mill Organic Clothing is hard to beat.
The range isn't extensive or flamboyant. They do 100% organic sweatshirts, t-shirts, shirts, shorts, pants, and socks - and they do them very, very well.
Through a low-carbon American-based supply chain, (that uses natural dyes and less water and electricity than other sustainable clothing brands) Harvest & Mill has achieved carbon-neutral status.
All orders ship in plastic-free, recyclable, and compostable packaging.
Despite all this, Harvest & Mill products have one of the lowest price points of any sustainable clothing brand I've listed here. You'll get high quality at a very affordable price.
✔ Fully Circular Brand
✔ Recycled & Organic Fabrics
✔ Handcrafted by Artisans
They Say: Fanfare Label is an independent sustainable fashion house leading the way for circularity and positive change. What others see as waste, we see as a starting point…
We Say: Fanfare Label demonstrates everything you would want when looking for a truly ethical, circular, and sustainable brand.
In fact, I would go further and say they set the standard that every other sustainable clothing brand should aspire to.
A mixture of organic cotton (GOTS and OEKO-TEX certified) and other sustainable materials such as recycled denim, wool offcuts, and deadstock fabric, is used to create unique and innovative designs for women.
The supply chain is 100% transparent, with fair wages and conditions. All garments are made locally in London by artisans - but US, EU, and worldwide shipping is available.
✔ High-Quality Outdoor Gear
✔ Organic Recycled Cotton
✔ Sustainable Production & Packaging
They Say: We at Coalatree pride ourselves on making eco-friendly goods you can take anywhere. In every step of the design, manufacturing, and shipping process, we look for ways to be more sustainable and minimize our impact. Environmental responsibility is central to our mission.
We Say: Coalatree Organics produces very high-quality, sustainably made outdoor clothing and accessories for men and women.
Many items in their range are made from upcycled coffee grounds and plastic bottles - which is why they are also included in my upcycled clothing brands list. But their organic basics, including a range of t-shirts and socks, are all made from 100% organic recycled cotton, so they deserve a place on this list as well.
My personal recommendation is the Save the Bees t-shirt in charcoal.
In addition to the recycled materials used, green factories with reduced carbon emissions and a waterless dye are just some of the sustainable practices that help identify Coalatree Organics as an eco-friendly brand.
✔ Good Budget Option
✔ For Ladies, Kids & Babies
✔ Second-Hand & Rentals Available
They Say: We offer beautiful merchandise at achievable price points that not only make family’s daily lives better, but consider the earth and maker in the process.
We Say: Ave Lumi is another sustainable brand that uses natural fibers to create desirable fashion for the whole family - but still comes in at an affordable price point.
They have leggings, cardigans, sweatshirts, shirts, and pants all made from organic cotton. For me, the kids' organic leggings are absolutely adorable. But whatever your age or size, you'll find something here that suits your taste and budget.
✔ Organic Basics for Kids
✔ Resell Outgrown Items
✔ No Toxic Chemicals
They Say: Our organic cotton comes from all-natural plants that are not genetically modified. It is grown without the use of any synthetic agricultural chemicals such as fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides, and defoliants.
We Say: If you want top-quality organic clothing for kids, that looks amazing and can be returned for resale when your kids have outgrown them, then Firebird Kids is the brand for you.
The resale option makes Firebird a truly circular fashion brand, and they offer a generous 110% brand credit which means you have even more money to reinvest in your next purchase as your little one gets increasingly less little!
Most items are made from 100% GMO-free organic cotton, which contains no toxic chemicals. You're investing in natural clothing that is kind to the planet and to your child's health.
✔ Carbon-Neutral Shipping
✔ Peta-Approved Vegan
✔ Oeko-Tex Certified
They Say: Feelgrounds apparel for real fans: ethically made with organic cotton.
We Say: Feelgrounds are not primarily a clothing brand. They're an environmentally friendly shoe manufacturer that specializes in minimalist barefoot footwear.
My colleague James is obsessed with barefoot shoes and is always boring us (sorry…educating us! ????) about the foot health benefits of transitioning to barefoot living.
However, when he told me that Feelgrounds also does a small range of organic hoodies and t-shirts, I became more interested and had to take a look for myself.
The range currently only consists of four items:
So I decided to test them all.
The hoodies are made from 85% organic cotton and 15% recycled polyester. The brushed surface of the interior is luxurious and cozy, making them my go-to top for evenings lazing on the couch!
The t-shirts are 100% organic cotton and (at 150 g/m²) have a quality feel without being too thick.
Both items are PETA-approved vegan, STANDARD 100 by OEKO-TEX certified, and made for Feelgrounds by an ethical and sustainable Fair Wear Foundation manufacturer.
Based on the quality of this small range, I hope Feelgrounds branch out into other organic and sustainable clothing options in the future.
There are several excellent reasons why you should consider buying your clothes from organic brands:
All of the brands recommended above offer genuine pesticide-free organic cotton. But what about other brands you might come across - how can you tell they are genuine?
When it comes to determining the authenticity of organic cotton clothing, there are a few key things to look out for.
Firstly, eco-certifications are your friend. Check the label (or website if you are shopping online) for certification from recognized organizations such as the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS).
Learn more about GOTS here.
An OCS certification is another way to ensure that the garment has been made using environmentally friendly and socially responsible practices.
Learn more about OCS here.
Absolutely! Organic clothing is made from materials that are grown without the use of harmful chemicals and pesticides, making them much better for the environment.
As well as being eco-friendly, organic clothes are often softer and more comfortable to wear than non-organic alternatives.
Plus, by supporting sustainable fashion brands that prioritize ethical production practices, you can feel good about your purchase knowing that it was made with both people and the planet in mind.
While there are many benefits to choosing organic cotton, there are also some potential negatives to consider. One is that organic farming practices can be more labor-intensive and costly for farmers, which can make the products more expensive for consumers.
There is also the issue of lower yields. Because organic cotton is grown without the use of synthetic pesticides and fertilizers, yields may be lower than conventional cotton crops, making it harder for farmers to meet demand.
However, many people believe that the benefits of supporting sustainable agriculture and reducing exposure to harmful chemicals outweigh these drawbacks.
Organic clothes can sometimes (but not always) be more expensive than their non-organic counterparts due to the higher cost of production, as outlined above.
At the current time, the demand for organic clothing is relatively low compared to conventional clothing, which means that economies of scale cannot be achieved in production.
The fast fashion industry produces garments on a vast scale, with little regard for ethics or the environmental damage it does.
When a brand uses sustainable materials and an ethical supply chain, you can expect it to have a higher price range. But sustainable clothing is almost always of far better quality, and lasts longer, meaning it is actually cheaper in the long run.
Also, many brands offer deals and discounts which can mean their products come in at much cheaper prices.
ASOS Organic is a collection of clothing and accessories offered by the online fashion retailer ASOS that they claim are made using sustainable materials and production methods.
However, ASOS has a history of being one of the worst brands in the fast fashion industry, and so I would not recommend you shop with them under any circumstances.
Zara has some items that they claim to be organic. However, they are another well-known fast fashion producer and should also be avoided entirely.
No - Shein is regarded as one of the worst fast fashion brands, and it does not have an organic clothing line.
Shein has faced criticism in the past for its fast fashion practices, which prioritize quick turnover of trendy clothing at low prices over sustainability and ethical production.
My advice is: do not buy from them - ever.
So these are the best organic fashion companies of 2024. Whether you're looking for women's, kids or men's organic clothing, I'm confident you'll be spoiled for choice when shopping with these excellent, ethical labels.
If you have a favorite organic clothing brand that I haven't included, please drop me a line and let me know. I'm always happy to test out new clothes and support any company that is committed to sustainability.
Our core values mean we always prioritize sustainability over profit. We carefully evaluate and personally test every product to ensure they meet our high standards. All products recommended in this article were tested in accordance with our Review Methodology.
