Regular readers will know that I’ve had my reservations for a while about whether or not mass-produced bamboo fabric can be called a sustainable fabric.

So, when I was tasked with researching the best bamboo pajamas for sale in the U.S. I was initially reluctant.

I needn’t have been.

It turns out there is an ever-growing range of sustainable bamboo pajamas to suit every budget.

I’ve noticed that as I get older I feel the cold more.

Until around five years ago, I always slept in my boxer shorts. Now, as a dad of a "certain age", I love a pair of warm comfy pajamas to help me drift off to sleep on my non-toxic mattress.

My eco-friendly bedding of choice has always been organic cotton. So when my midlife pajama-wearing kicked in, I instinctively went for the same fabric.

However, after testing a range of bamboo pajamas for this article, I’ve moved away from cotton and now spend my nights wrapped in bamboo.

The Nine Best Bamboo Pajamas for the Whole Family

Jump to: Men's - Women's - Kids

Later in this article, I’ll talk through exactly what it is about bamboo pajamas that made me switch from organic cotton.

But first, here are the best bamboo pajama options for the whole family.

Top 4 Men’s Bamboo Pajamas We Tested...

They Say: Every guy needs a comfortable pair of pants to keep him sleeping comfortably all through the night. With these bamboo sleep pants, you'll get quality, comfort, and so much more. Not only do these bamboo pants feature a comfy elastic waistband, adjustable drawstring, and functional side pockets, but they're also naturally thermal regulating moisture-wicking and allergy-resistant. Plan on getting a good night's sleep and being cool, clean, and comfortable in bamboo.

We Say: Cariloha is an island brand that initially specialized in cotton products.

The brand really started to attract the attention of the eco-friendly-minded when they focused on bamboo products.

All Cariloha bamboo fabric contains high levels of quality bamboo viscose. Made using a four-step process:

  1. Harvest: Seasoned bamboo stalks are cut into smaller pieces of raw bamboo.
  2. Drying: The raw bamboo is soaked using an eco-friendly closed-loop manufacturing process. The extracted pulp is dried to form parchment-like sheets.
  3. Milling: The dry bamboo sheets are milled into a soft, fluffy material called viscose from bamboo.
  4. Sewing: The viscose is finally separated and spun into thread, ready for weaving with other materials to make new Cariloha products.

Cariloha claims that “the end result is a comfortable, sustainable bamboo viscose fabric that's twice as soft as cotton and 3 degrees cooler”.

It’s a valid claim. These elastic waist sleep pants are luxuriously soft to the touch and wonderfully cooling. They’re the coziest pajamas I’ve slept in for many years.

Pair them with the Bamboo Sleep Crew Shirt for the ultimate in sustainable bamboo sleepwear luxury.

Cariloha makes a wide range of products that all meet the following certification, where applicable:

This is a carbon-neutral product. Cariloha offsets the 7.3kgs of carbon generated by manufacturing these sleep pants by purchasing third-party verified offset credits.

They Say: Made with 100% organic bamboo lyocell fabric from naturally renewable and sustainably harvested bamboo forests, this eco-friendly pajama shirt is breathable and wicks moisture away from you while you sleep to keep you comfortable all night long. With a 300 thread count (that's equal to a 1000 cotton thread count!), this cozy shirt requires less water and energy to be grown and manufactured than cotton and features a luxurious silky smooth texture.

We Say: This is a more pricey option, but I’ve included it because it’s a beautiful combination of made by Ettitude, sold by EarthHero.

Ettitude makes great bamboo sleepwear. Their CleanBamboo is sourced from FSC-certified sustainable forests and processed in a closed-loop system that is non-toxic and recycles 98% of water.

EarthHero is a favorite online shopping destination of mine.

They’re a Certified B Corporation, Climate Neutral, and a member of 1% For The Planet.

They only sell the best eco-friendly products. All shipped to your door in plastic-free packaging.

This pajama shirt is pricey for a reason. It’s top quality. Made to last from 100% organic bamboo lyocell.

The silky feel of the shirt is soothing against the skin. It might be psychological, but I almost instantly start to feel sleepy every time I slip into this pajama shirt.

Pair with Ettitude Men’s Bamboo Sateen Pajama Shorts, and you’ve got the perfect bamboo pajama set to keep you cool on hot summer nights.

They Say: Pajamas top features henley neck with three buttons and a chest pocket. With buttons for closure, it is easy to put on and off. Long sleeves designed to provide enough coverage to withstand the cold weather. Knit pajama pants are softer and longer-wearing. With the bamboo viscose fabric, it is more comfortable and breathable, and it will keep you from sweating. Full-length sleep bottoms come with tighten up cuffs to keep you warm.

We Say: This bamboo pajama set from Latuza is a fantastic option for those looking for a balance between eco-friendly and value.

They’re made from the popular split of 95% bamboo viscose and 5% spandex.

At this price range, the viscose won't be the best of the best in terms of sustainability, but it’s still more sustainable than many other options out there.

Latuza offers a 30-day money-back guarantee on all its products. Products must be returned in the original packaging and shipped within 30 days of delivery or 40 days of purchase.

They Say: Our bathrobe has been developed with the latest technology, moisture-absorbing, odor-Resistant, and absolute quick-drying. Soft and breathable bamboo viscose gives you skin-friendly comfort. Double-needle hemming with functional roomy side pockets and self-tie belt. Kimono Robes with stylish shawl collar neck shows the combination of classic design and modern comfort.

We Say: Ok. I know this isn’t technically bamboo pajamas. But, anyone who knew me at college knows how much I love a robe.

I lived in my old battered striped robe at college for many (too many!) years.

I wanted to get at least one robe on the list, and my choice is Ham&Sam.

Cards on the table. This is not the most eco-friendly robe I tested.

However, most of the other robes cost hundreds of dollars.

Sure, they were comfortable, Sure they had a higher bamboo content from a closed-loop process. But, I wanted the robe option to be as affordable as possible.

This super-soft bamboo nightgown from Ham&Sam is lovely to wear. I could very easily slip back into my old college ways and wear it around the house all day.

In terms of eco-friendly credentials, the mix of bamboo viscose, organic cotton, and spandex is more than acceptable for the price.

Top 4 Women's Bamboo Pajamas We Tested...

They Say: Made with 100% organic bamboo lyocell fabric from naturally renewable and sustainably harvested bamboo forests, this eco-friendly pajama shirt is breathable and wicks moisture away from you while you sleep to keep you comfortable all night long. Breastfeeding cami nightgown featuring an elastic empire waist, lace trim neckline, and adjustable spaghetti straps. Easy access to feed baby by pulling down the bust panel.

We Say: Mrs. M suffered terribly with nighttime hot flashes when carrying both of our girls.

It turns out to be a hereditary issue because her sister suffered in precisely the same way when carrying our little nephew.

She swore by this Latuza set to keep her cool during her pregnancy night sweats and for easier nighttime access in the early days of breastfeeding.

They Say: Made from Viscose from Bamboo. Oprah described our buttery soft loungewear as the “softest EVER”. We Say: This bamboo pajama set has been Mrs. M’s ‘go-to’ set for cooler nights for a couple of years now.

She usually treats pajama sets like coats. Wear for a season and then donate or recycle. I know…she’s working on it! 😉

But, she loves this pajama set so much that it has made it to its third winter.

It’s a testament to the quality of the materials that it’s still looking pretty much as good as new. The color might not be quite as bright…but this is a pajama set with plenty of life still left in it!

Impressive stuff!

They Say: This sleep shirt has a short sleeve and a trimmed v-shaped neckline to keep you feeling relaxed all night. It is also tag-less, so your neck is itch-free, giving you ultimate comfort. It has a straight silhouette, with an easy fit that lets you move around freely but is still flattering. This nightshirt hits above the knee. Because of its jersey material, this sleep tee is soft on the skin and will remain durable even after countless washings and dryings.

We Say: This flowing sleep dress is an excellent option for those who feel restricted in traditional pajamas.

It’s made from what Fishers Finery calls EcoFabric (bamboo viscose mixed with super soft organic cotton and spandex for a bit of stretch).

This is a very popular item on Amazon with a rating of 4.6 out of 5 from over 1,000 reviews.

Mrs. M found it soft and comfortable and said it washed really well. It’s just not her cup of tea. She’s a traditional ‘top and pants’ kinda gal.

However, if you’re in the market for a reasonably priced sleep dress with decent enough eco-credentials, then this offering from Fisher Finery is definitely worth a look.

Mummy is also happy with them. She has already made a request for more for Christmas, birthday, Easter, Hanukkah…you name it!

Little Sleepies was founded by mom of two, Maradith, who was frustrated with the lack of functional, long-lasting, eco-friendly sleepwear for kids with sensitive skin…so she started making her own.

Little Sleepies has developed a strong base of loyal and passionate customers, Including celebrities like Chrissy Teigen, Andy Cohen, Haylie Duff, the Kardashians (Kim, Khloe, and Kylie).

The Kardashians are never wrong…right?! 😊

Avoid Plastic Bamboo Fabrics

The world of bamboo fabric is a pretty murky one (although it’s getting better).

Many sellers/manufacturers try all the greenwashing tactics in the book to convince you that their product is sustainable.

Make sure you buy from a reputable source, and you know exactly what materials have gone into your bamboo pajamas.

Steer clear of products labeled as bamboo that are just polyester with a small amount of bamboo fibers added.

I’ve done all the heavy lifting for you. You can rest assured that all the products recommended in this article maintain good sustainability standards.

Things To Look For In Your Bamboo Sleepwear

I considered many factors when arriving at my recommendations. The main ones are:

  • Price: Your sustainable bamboo pajamas should not give you restless nights because they cost a small fortune. I’ve tried to keep my recommendations as affordable as possible…without compromising too much on eco-credentials.
  • Material: Many bamboo sleepwear sets are bamboo mixed with other materials to keep the cost down. This is fine with me. Providing that the additional material(s) are also sustainable and eco-friendly.
  • Certifications: Looking out for brands carrying respected certifications is a great way to help ensure that you're getting an eco-friendly product.
  • Quality: As mentioned in my Why Is Fast Fashion Bad article, my dear old dad loves the saying “buy cheap, buy twice”. Spending an extra few bucks and investing in good-quality bamboo pajamas will save you money because they will last longer. Good for your pocket. Great for the planet (less fabric waste going to landfill).
  • Care: I’ve only recommended bamboo pajamas that can be machine washed with eco-friendly laundry detergent. Who has the time to hand wash or dry clean their pajamas?!
  • Feel: I want to feel warm and snuggly at night. I’ve only recommended bamboo pajamas that felt soft against my skin.

Why Bamboo Makes Excellent Pajamas

There are many reasons why bamboo is the perfect material for pajamas. My top four are:

  1. Bamboo pajamas wick moisture and allow your skin to breathe. This helps keep you cool at night.
  2. Bamboo pajamas are hypoallergenic. Making them the perfect choice for people with sensitive skin and allergies.
  3. Bamboo pajamas are antibacterial. Meaning you might be able to get away with washing them less frequently than some other fabrics.
  4. Bamboo is a wonderfully sustainable product. It’s fast-growing, needs very little water, zero pesticide/fertilizer, and produces 30% more oxygen than trees.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are Bamboo Pajamas Warm Or Cool?

Due to the temperature-regulating and moisture-wicking properties of bamboo viscose, bamboo pajamas keep you at the perfect temperature. If temperature regulation is important to you, look for bamboo pajamas with as close to 100% bamboo viscose content as possible.

Do Bamboo PJs Shrink?

There is a good chance your bamboo PJs will shrink if exposed to heat. Always wash your bamboo PJs on a cool setting and air dry.

Does Bamboo Fabric Dry Quickly?

According to Mumsnet, bamboo dries around 10% faster than cotton.

What Is A Capri Pajama Set?

Capri pajama bottoms (or capri pants) are longer than shorts but shorter than regular pants. They have a loose fit with wide legs.

What’s The Difference Between Women Bamboo Pajamas And Men Bamboo Pajamas?

The material used is the same for women's bamboo pajamas and men’s. The main differences are:

  • Sizes
  • Colors and patterns
  • Fit (for example, tops for women are designed to fit around larger chests)
  • Decorations (bamboo pajamas for women often have satin trim, lace, etc.)

The Final Word

I’ve been somewhat converted to the idea of using bamboo fiber for pajamas.

It just has to be done in as eco-friendly a way as possible. To ensure that the undoubted sustainable qualities of raw bamboo are not lost in the processes used to convert it into bamboo viscose.

We would produce all viscose used for bamboo sleepwear in a closed-loop system that dramatically reduced water usage and water pollution in an ideal world.
