Looking for the best eco-friendly mattresses that won't break the bank?

Most people now realize how the harmful chemicals and flame retardants in synthetic mattresses can harm your health. They're also made using materials and processes that are terrible for the environment.

But finding a good quality organic mattress that is also affordable can be a challenge.

Our experts have chosen the best value sustainable mattresses on the market in 2024. With non-toxic options to suit all budgets, you can say goodbye to chemicals and enjoy the benefits of organic sleep.

Top Picks: The Best Organic Mattress Brands of 2024

We Say: This mattress ticked all the boxes for me. It's made of certified natural organic materials of the highest quality, assembled in the USA.

The sheer volume of certifications that come with his mattress is impressive and reassuring.

Eco-credentials are great, of course, but comfort is also vital when choosing a mattress. This is where I found the Botanical Bliss excels. It was a total dream to sleep on. The most comfortable mattress I ever tried, bar none.

The Botanic Bliss is very much the flagship, premium product of the PlushBeds range. However, in my eyes, it’s worth every cent.

This mattress is made from a blend of organic cotton, organic New Zealand wool, and organic Dunlop latex. It's completely free from mercury, lead, andheavy metals. And also from chlorofluorocarbons, chloroform, cyanide, and PBDE flame retardants.

When choosing an overall winner from a vast array of contenders, I had to consider which mattresses would meet the needs of most people. This is another tick for the Botanic Bliss. The choice of size, firmness, and height options means whatever your individual needs are; the Botanical Bliss has you covered.

My one gripe would be the sleep trial. For me, 100 nights is plenty to decide if you love the mattress or not. However, the fact you have to return it at your cost or pay a $149 collection fee might be a sticking point for some people.

But of all the organic mattresses I tested, this is the one I kept for my own bedroom. I'll be sleeping on this for many, many years to come and I recommend it to anybody.

So happy with the chemical free aspects of this mattress, like why should this be "special" every company should be doing this for the people.

Incredible quality sleep on the first night. Should have bought sooner. Keep up the good work. We will be buying another in King size when we finish our home remodel.

We Say: Avocado as a company is right up there with PlusBeds in terms of green credentials. I love that they own their entire supply chain and meet the most stringent standards for ecology and social responsibility.

The Avocado Green Mattress is handmade in California. They use only 100% GOTS-certified organic cotton, wool, and GOLS-certified latex. It’s also GREENGUARD Gold certified for low emissions.

One thing that really impressed me (and Mrs. M) is that there is very little motion transfer with this mattress. This means if the person next to you (i.e. me apparently) is a fidgety sleeper, you won’t be disturbed.

We also found it to be an excellent mattress for back sleepers, thanks to the inbuilt support system.

The sleep trial night and return cost are better than the overall winner. I don't think anyone will need to return either one, but if that’s something of concern to you, then the Avocado organic mattress might be a better option.

We Say: Naturepedic is one of the leading organic mattress brands in the U.S.

Their mattresses are constructed by Amish craftsmen in their GOTS certified factory in Chagrin Falls, Ohio.

It’s not just the factory that’s certified. The entire finished mattress is also 100% organic. You will find GOTS certified organic cotton and organic wool throughout this mattress.

Naturepedic goes beyond the minimum requirements for organic certification. It’s a company-wide mission to strive for a higher standard.

These quality organic components really make a difference. The Naturepedic Serenade is comfortable, durable, and good value considering the quality.

  • Sleep Trial: 365-night trial. Free returns.

We Say: The Awara Premier is a luxury latex hybrid mattress in a box, with one of the longest sleep trials I ever heard of.

You get a 365-night trial to - literally - sleep on it.

Decided on night 364 that the Awara hybrid latex mattress is not for you? No worries, simply let them know, and they will help you donate it to someone local in need and refund you in full.

The cooling properties of this mattress are impressive. I’d recommend it to anyone who sleeps hot.

The Awara natural mattress also has one of the most comprehensive warranties around - but then a forever warranty is always going to be hard to beat! It just shows that Awara has full confidence in the quality of its product.

  • Mattress Style: Hybrid.
  • Sizes Options: Twin, Twin XL, Full, Queen, King, Cal King.
  • Sleep Trial: 120-night trial. Free returns.
  • Warranty: 20-year warranty.

We Say: The Happsy Organic Mattress contains no glues, adhesives, or flame retardants.

It’s shipped to you vacuum-packed inside a bag inside a box. That's cool because for some reason, watching a ‘mattress in a box’ slowly expand never fails to put a smile on my face.

The pleasure doesn’t stop there! The mattress was lovely to sleep on and offered more than enough support once fully expanded (this took around 30 minutes).

The 120-night sleep trial and free returns policy give you great peace of mind. You can test out the mattress for yourself and return it if you’re not 100% satisfied.

If you’re a side sleeper or just like a plusher sleep surface, you might want to consider adding the optional mattress topper to your order. This costs between $249 (Twin) and $499 (Cal King).

  • Mattress Style: Hybrid.
  • Size Options: Twin, Twin XL, Full, Queen, King, Cal King, Split King.
  • Sleep Trial: 365-night trial.
  • Warranty: 25-year warranty.
  • Shipping: Free U.S shipping. Optional setup service available for a fee.
  • Certifications: CertiPUR-US, Climate Neutral, FairTrade Cotton, GreenGuard Gold.

We Say: Mrs. M swears by her Brentwood Home Buckwheat Yoga Bolster Cushion, and she inspired me to also take a look at their range of mattresses.

Brentwood Home is an eco-friendly brand that has been promoting healthy lifestyles since 1987.

I chose to test their top-selling luxury hybrid mattress, the Oceano. Customers seem to love this model, and when mine arrived I could immediately see why.

The combination of high-quality coils and latex produces a luxurious medium-soft sleep surface.

This mattress was slightly too soft for my liking, but the Oceano is worth consideration if you prefer a soft and luxurious mattress. It's particularly recommended for lightweight individuals who need a mattress to help with back pain.

The open-cell, gel-infused, 20% plant-based BioFoam did a fantastic job of regulating temperature. For that reason, this is another mattress I would recommend for hot sleepers.

You have a whole year to test this mattress out at home and decide if you want to keep it or not. If you do decide to keep it, it’s covered by a 25-year warranty.

  • Mattress Style: Latex.
  • Size Options: Twin, Twin XL, Full, Queen, King, California King, Split California King.
  • Sleep Trial: 365-night trial.
  • Warranty: 25-year warranty.
  • Shipping: Free shipping.
  • Certifications: GOTS, GOLS, FSC, Made Safe, Climate Neutral.

We Say: Two Avocado recommendations on the same list. Maybe I do have a ‘thing’ for them after all!

I had to include this mattress in the list. It’s the first mattress Avocado has produced that does not contain any coils.

Avocado states this is the most environmentally friendly mattress they’ve ever produced. That's quite something considering the impeccable eco-credentials of this company.

This firm latex mattress still feels luxurious and is covered by Avocados 365-night trial and 25-year warranty.

  • Mattress Style: Copper Memory Foam
  • Size Options: Twin, Twin XL, Full, Queen, King, Cal King.
  • Sleep Trial: 120-night trial. Free returns.
  • Warranty: Lifetime warranty.
  • Shipping: Free shipping to the lower 48 states.
  • Certifications: CertiPUR-US.

We Say: I wanted to test out this mattress for two main reasons:

  1. Cooper Foam: The copper in the foam is antibacterial and is supposed to make the sleeping surface cool. I don’t really have any way of verifying the antibacterial claim. However, I can confirm that this mattress is cool to sleep on. Some of the hybrids sleep cooler, but for a foam mattress, the sleeping temperature is comfortable.
  2. Dual firmness: This mattress comes with two firmness options (soft and firm). Simply flip the mattress over to whichever firmness option you prefer. The soft side was too soft for me; the firm side was spot on.

This is a fantastic option for anyone who doesn’t yet know if they prefer a soft or firm mattress.

Thanks to the 120-night trial, you can test both sides of the mattress in the comfort of your bedroom and decide which one works for you.

This mattress comes in a box and takes a couple of hours to decompress fully.

This was one of the lighter mattresses I tested (due to no coils), so easy to move around on your own.

  • Mattress Style: Hybrid.
  • Size Options: Twin, Twin XL, Full, Queen, King, Cal King.
  • Sleep Trial: 365-night trial. Free returns.
  • Warranty: Lifetime warranty.
  • Shipping: Free U.S shipping.
  • Certifications: CertiPUR-US.

We Say: The 365-night trial and the lifetime warranty tempted me to test the DreamCloud Luxury Hybrid Mattress.

DreamCloud is a New York-based outfit offering some of the plushest mattresses on the market.

I tested the entry-level version, which was incredibly luxurious. So I don't doubt that the more premium options (Premier and Premier Rest) are even more so.

For me, the selling points of this mattress are the quilted foam and cashmere top layer and the price.

The top of the mattress was so soft that I skipped the sheet for the first night and kept moving around to feel the softness on my skin. Weird? No, I didn't think so! 😉

The price is pretty hard to beat also. At the time of publishing, you can get a queen mattress, sheets, mattress protector, and two pillows for $999. All delivered to your door within five business days.

  • Mattress Style: Hybrid.
  • Size Options: Twin, Twin XL, Full, Queen, King, Cal King.
  • Firmness Options: Medium, Medium-Firm.
  • Sleep Trial: 90-night trial. Free returns.
  • Warranty: 15-year warranty.
  • Shipping: Free U.S. shipping.
  • Certifications: OEKO-TEX Standard 100, GOTS.

We Say: I initially tested the Eco Terra Mattress because of its lower-than-average price point.

Eco Terra has kept as much of the production in-house as possible (it’s handcrafted in Los Angeles). By doing so, they've managed to produce an eco-friendly and wallet-friendly mattress.

There are two firmness options available:

  • Medium: Blends support with softness. I recommend the medium mattress for side sleepers and lighter-weight sleepers. Or in fact for anyone who needs extra relief from pressure point pain in the shoulders, hips, and knees.
  • Medium-Firm: This option offers more support and is popular with back and stomach sleepers, and adults with a larger frame.

I tested the medium-firm option and found it to still be a little on the soft side. If you like a firm mattress, this might not be the brand for you.

The 90-night sleet trail is one of the shortest on the list, but they do offer free returns and free shipping. The 15-year warranty will also give peace of mind.

All things considered, this is a fantastic lower price point option for those who like a softer feeling mattress.

  • Mattress Style: Hybrid.
  • Size Options: Twin, Twin XL, Full, Queen, King, Cal King.
  • Sleep Trial: 100-night trial. Free returns.
  • Warranty: 20-year warranty.
  • Shipping: Free U.S. shipping.
  • Certifications: CertiPUR-US, GREENGUARD Gold.

We Say: The six-layer Bear Hybrid Mattress intrigued me because of its use of Celliant FDA Determined Infrared Yarn Technology.

According to Bear, this technology has been "clinically proven to enhance tissue oxygen levels." It can also "improve athletic performance, sleep quality, health, and wellness”.

As a keen cyclist and all-around amateur athlete, this technology is very appealing.

Thanks to the cooling gel memory foam, the Bear Hybrid Mattress gave me a good night’s sleep during a scorching spell of weather.

So, at the risk of starting to sound like a broken record, this is another mattress I would recommend for hot sleepers.

  • Mattress Style: Gel Memory Foam.
  • Size Options: Twin, Twin XL, Full, Queen, King, Cal King.
  • Sleep Trial: 365-night trial. Free returns
  • Warranty: Forever warranty.
  • Shipping: Free shipping.
  • Certifications: CertiPUR-US, OKEO-TEX.

We Say: Nectar are relatively new players in the mattress in a box market, but boy are they trying to make waves!

The Nectar Mattress is their entry-level offering and the one I tested.

For the price, it's a wonderfully comfortable mattress. In fact, it sleeps as well as some of the mattresses that cost considerably more.

  • Mattress Style: Latex.
  • Size Options: Twin, Twin XL, Full, Queen, King, Cal King, Split Queen, Split King, Split Cal King.
  • Height Options: 7”, 9”
  • Sleep Trial: 120-night trial. Free pickup.
  • Warranty: 20-year warranty.
  • Shipping: Free shipping.
  • Certifications: OEKO-TEX, GOTS.

We Say: The Latex For Less range of natural latex mattresses are a no-frills offer at a decent price point.

There are no multiple options and add-ons to confuse you. They simply offer one mattress with two firmness options. One side is firm, and the other is medium.

The medium side is made from Talalay latex. The firm side, which is good for stomach sleepers, uses Dunlop.

Natural wool layers act as a natural fire retardant and regulate temperature.

This mattress slept warmer than most but cooler than the Live And Sleep.

  • Mattress Style: Hybrid.
  • Sizes Options: Twin, Twin XL, Full, Queen, King, California King, Split King.
  • Sleep Trial: 100-night trial. Free returns.
  • Warranty: 20-year warranty.
  • Shipping: Free curbside shipping to anywhere in the contiguous U.S.
  • Certifications: OEKO-TEX Standard100, GOTS, Rainforest Alliance, Eco-Institut.

We Say: Amerisleep is probably best known for its range of memory foam mattresses (AS2, AS3, and AS5).

The Organica is their latest offering and the only Amerisleep model made from natural and organic components.

The top layer consists of a 1” baton of Joma wool. This acts as a fire barrier and temperature regulator. This is encased in GOTS-certified cotton.

Under the Joma wool is a 3” comfort layer of natural Talalay latex. This combination makes the Organica ideal for people who enjoy a level of ‘give’ from their mattress, but not necessarily a full hug.

The Talalay latex level is especially good at relieving pressure from the body, regardless of your sleeping position.

The Joma wool is ethically sourced, and the latex is Rainforest Alliance and Eco-Institut certified.

Next comes the coils. 8” of them, to be precise. With excellent firm edge support.

The bottom layer is 1” of Dunlop latex for stability.

The mattress comes with a 100-night sleep trial and a 20-year warranty for peace of mind.

  • Mattress Style: Hybrid.
  • Size Options: Twin, Twin XL, Full, Queen, King, Cal King.
  • Sleep Trial: 120-night trial. Free returns.
  • Warranty: Forever warranty.
  • Shipping: Free shipping.
  • Certifications: OEKO-TEX100, GOTS, Rainforest Alliance, Eco Initiative Recycled Steel.

We Say: My youngest daughter is a side sleeper. So I was keen to test the EcoCloud with her because WinkBeds specifies on its website that this mattress is designed for side sleepers.

A top layer of organic cotton and New Zealand wool covers a 4” ventilated Talalay latex comfort layer.

Next comes the innerspring system of individually wrapped coils with edge support.

It got the thumbs up from my youngest tester in training (and I found it comfortable too) so, if you're a side sleeper, this might be one to try.

You get 120 nights to make your mind up, and a lifetime warranty covers your purchase.

  • Mattress Style: Latex.
  • Size Options: Twin, Twin XL, Full, Queen, King.
  • Firmness Options: Medium-Firm
  • Sleep Trial: 365-night trial. Full refund if you donate the unwanted mattress to charity.
  • Warranty: 10-year warranty.
  • Shipping: Via FedEx. Free anywhere in the contiguous 48 States, excluding U.S. Military APO/FPO addresses and PO Boxes.
  • Certifications: GOTS, OEKO-TEK.

We Say: As far as mattresses made of natural latex are concerned, the Spindle is pretty innovative.

They have tried to solve the firmness dilemma by including three interchangeable latex layers.

This is a neat solution that makes the Spindle Organic Latex Mattress suitable for any style of sleeper with any firmness preference. Simply swap the order of the layers around until you find the perfect firmness combination for you.

All this flexibility comes at a price, though. The Spindle Mattress is pretty pricey.

I also like the sound of their 25-Year Comfort Life Program. It lets you to trade in your old latex layers for brand-new ones at 30% off the regular asking price.

This softens the blow of the high RRP because it gives you the flexibility to extend the lifespan in the future at a discount price.

If you feel this might be the mattress for you, the 365-night trial period gives you a full year to make your mind up.

  • Mattress Style: Hybrid.
  • Size Options: Twin, Twin XL, Full, Queen, King, CA King.
  • Sleep Trial: 100-night trial.
  • Warranty: 25-year warranty.
  • Shipping: Free shipping to your doorstep.
  • Certifications: GreenGuard Gold, GOTS.

We Say: This Birch mattress is another that has excellent cooling properties and is a fantastic option for those who sleep hot.

The individually wrapped steel coils are made in the USA and offer decent comfort, support, and pressure relief.

The product is free from polyurethane foam and contains no harsh chemicals.

In terms of pricing, I would rate this Birch mattress as a mid-level offering and definitely worth the price tag.

Free shipping is available to all 50 states, and you get a 100-night sleep trial. If you decide to keep the mattress, you’re covered by a 25-year warranty.

  • Mattress Style: Hybrid.
  • Size Options: Twin, Twin XL, Full, Full XL, Queen, King, CA King.
  • Sleep Trial: 365-night trial.
  • Warranty: 20-year warranty.
  • Shipping: Free shipping & Returns
  • Certifications: Made Safe, GOTS, GOLS, OEKO-TEX

We Say: My Green Mattress offers two high-quality organic mattresses at affordable price points.

  • The Natural Escape is the luxury option, offering organic latex layers on top of pocketed coil innerspring. This option offers enhanced lumbar support and motion transfer reduction, and has a medium-firm feel.
  • The Kiwi Organic Mattress is the budget option. In many ways it feels similar to the Natural Escape, but without all the enhanced features. It has a medium feel, so slightly softer. Also, it's only rated for 600 lbs, compared to 750 lbs on the luxury version.

Both mattresses are handmade from certified high-quality organic and natural materials. Both have individually pocketed coils and are made without chemicals, flame retardants, or polyurethane foam. Both offer a comfortable sleep on a healthy surface.

If your budget will stretch to the Natural Escape I would say it is definitely the better mattress, and it's worth the extra $300. However, if you are looking for a top-quality natural mattress on a tighter budget then the Kiwi will serve you very well

  • Mattress Style: Gel Memory Foam
  • Size Options: Twin, Twin XL, Full (Double), Queen, King, Cal King.
  • Sleep Trial: 100-night trial.
  • Warranty: 20-year warranty.
  • Shipping: Free fast shipping.
  • Certifications: CertiPUR-US, OEKO-TEX.

We Say: This mattress initially made the list because they donate a portion of every sale to the National Alliance to End Homelessness. I’m not sure how much they donate because it's not listed on the website. I’ve reached out to them for clarification.

The foam in this mattress is CertiPUR-US and OEKO-TEX certified.

It was the warmest sleeping mattress I tested and slightly too soft for my liking. The Elite is firmer...and cheaper!

If you're looking for a quality eco-friendly mattress on a budget, this might be the one for you.

You get 100 nights (75 for the Elite and 30 for the Classic) to test out the mattress at home. If you decide it’s not for you, you can return free of charge for a full refund.

Buyer's Guide: What Makes a Mattress Eco-Friendly?

The vast range of options now available when shopping for an adult mattress in the USA is staggering.

So what criteria did I use when weighing up the pros and cons of the natural mattresses listed above? And what should you look for when deciding which one is right for you?

To help you narrow down the field, I would advise looking out for the following:

Natural Materials

We spend nearly a third of our lives sleeping, so it’s essential to ensure that our mattress does not contain a cocktail of toxic chemicals.

A layer of wool, for example, will make a mattress flame retardant without using any nasty chemicals.

Many mattress brands now offer products that are only made with organic materials and processes.

Organic mattresses can be pretty pricey. That is why mattresses made from natural materials are also a popular option. They help dramatically reduce toxins in the mattress without the hefty price tag of being fully organic.

Ecolabels and Certifications

A high-quality eco-friendly mattress from a reputable and sustainable company will come with many ecolabels and organic certifications attached to prove its green credentials.

The main two to look out for are Global Organic Latex Standard (GOLS) and Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS).

GOLS certifies that any latex in your mattress has passed strict safety and organic tests. GOTS is very similar but certifies the textiles in your mattress (organic cotton covers, for example), not the latex.

You need to be on your guard to ensure that any certification is genuine, that the company has the right to use it, and that it is not greenwashing.

Eco-Friendly and Sustainable Companies

A mattress could be stuffed with the finest eco-friendly materials on the planet, but it would all mean nothing if the factory making it uses unethical practices such as child, or forced, labor.

Researching the actual mattress companies and how they operate is just as important as analyzing the mattress itself.

Made in USA

Where possible, buy a mattress made in the U.S.

Domestic companies have to adhere to strict regulations. This helps ensure that your organic bed meets all the eco-friendly credentials you’re looking for.

Price

I took into account the price point of each of the non-toxic mattress brands and products I have recommended in my reviews and prioritized those I felt offered the best value for money.

Organic mattresses are a major investment that will last for many years, so I do not feel you should skimp on quality. But that doesn't mean you need to pay over the odds.

Buying directly from the manufacturer can help reduce the cost, and it's normally cheaper to buy mattresses online. You can also check what financing options are available if you cannot afford the entire cost upfront.

Organic Mattress Types Explained

It's important to understand that a certain type of mattress suits a certain type of sleeper. Here's a brief guide to the various organic mattress types so you can make sure you choose one that best meets your needs:

  • Latex: Made from organic or natural foam. They are known for their durability, responsiveness, and cooling properties. Latex mattresses are a good choice for people who want a bouncy and supportive mattress. However, some people are allergic and would therefore need a latex-free mattress.
  • Memory Foam: Made from viscoelastic foam that conforms to the body's shape. These mattresses are great for pressure relief, especially for side sleepers. They also absorb movement well, making them a good choice for couples.
  • Gel Memory Foam: Contain an added layer of gel-infused foam that provides extra cooling and support. The gel helps dissipate heat, making these mattresses a good choice for hot sleepers.
  • Hybrid: Hybrid mattresses combine different materials, such as coils and foam or latex, to provide a balance of support and comfort. They are a good choice for people who want the benefits of different materials in one mattress. For example, you might get the bounce and support of coils with the pressure relief of foam or latex.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Most Eco-Friendly Mattress?

The U.S. adult mattress market is now so big it’s impossible to pick one. To be on the right track to getting an environmentally friendly mattress, you need to ensure it’s made sustainably, using ethically sourced and chemical-free materials.

Anything from Avocado or PlushBeds is an excellent place to start the search.

Is a Sustainable Mattress the Healthiest to Sleep On?

Yes - if health is your primary consideration, my advice would be to make your mattress material organic. That way you can guarantee it contains no VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds) or chemical flame retardants. This is one of the many benefits of a luxury organic mattress over conventional mattresses.

Which Mattress is Good for Side Sleepers?

The EcoCloud by WinkBeds is specially designed for side sleepers, and my daughter loved it. It was recommended by a certified sleep science coach and we found the support and pressure relief were just right.

If you want to try a different brand, then look at my guide to side sleeper mattresses.

You'll find the Avocado Green Mattress, which has a medium to firm rating. My top overall pick, the Botanical Bliss, also comes in a choice of firmness options including medium.

Are Memory Foam Mattresses Bad for the Environment?

With their high level of off-gassing and big carbon footprints, old memory foam mattresses were a bit of an environmental disaster. Newer models from reputable and sustainable companies that tread much more gently on mother earth are now commonplace in the market. I have recommended some in this article.

What is the Difference Between Talalay and Dunlop Latex?

Talalay latex is produced by filling a closed mold with liquid latex rubber. The mold is then frozen, and carbon dioxide gas is added. This result is a softer latex ideal for mattress toppers and mattresses. Dunlop latex, developed in 1929, is firmer, heavier, and more durable.

The Final Word

These reviews have taken many months to complete, but I have to say I've enjoyed every second of it. To have the chance to test the best organic mattresses for a living was undoubtedly a labor of love.

The PlushBeds Botanical Bliss was my favorite of all the mattresses I tested and remains the one I sleep on today. But there were plenty of great eco-friendly options to suit all tastes, requirements, and budgets.

If you feel strongly that I’ve missed an obvious contender, then please drop me a line. I love talking about all things green sleep-related.

My one main piece of advice would be to spend as much as you can afford. If you can afford to go 100% organic, then you should. It’s better for the planet, and it’s better for your health.

However, don’t stress if buying an organic mattress is out of your price range. There are some very healthy and comfy ‘natural’ options also available these days.
