Are you ready to make your bedroom an eco-friendly sleep sanctuary?
Whether you're just starting to dip your toes into sustainable living or looking for more ways to create a healthier home environment…non-toxic bedroom furniture is the way to go!
This article walks you through some of the best ways to leave hazardous materials behind and choose products made with sustainability and safety in mind.
My family and I have tested a wide range of non-toxic furniture options in the following categories:
Dresser | Nightstand | Wardrobe | Bench | Mattress | Bed Frame | Headboard
Read on to discover which pieces made the cut.
Also, later in this article, I'll discuss what you should look for (and what to avoid) when shopping for non-toxic bedroom furniture. But first, these are the brands we highly recommend...

✔ Made in USA
✔ B Corp Certification
✔ Transparent Supply Chain
Why It's the Best Overall: Avocado offers B Corp certification, solid-wood craftsmanship, and verified organic materials. That's why it's my top choice for most non-toxic furniture in the bedroom.
I've tested many Avocado bedroom furniture products over the years, including its nightstand, dresser, mattresses, bed frames, headboards, and more. I found exceptional quality, durability, and safety across all the ranges I tested.
The only way Avocado could improve is to expand its product range. The range is limited, and other brands are a better option in some cases. For example, Medley beats Avocado for benches, poufs & ottomans.
Personal Experience: The City Bed Frame is the most recent Avocado bedroom product I tested, and I'm very impressed with the results. It gave off zero chemical smell when unboxed. This is because Avocado manufactures its furniture in Los Angeles using solid hardwoods with finishes containing no volatile organic compounds (VOCs)
It took me just 35 minutes to assemble the City frame without requiring any special tools or wrestling with confusing instructions. After setting up, I stood on the frame to test its strength and was impressed at how stable it was. It didn't bend or flex at all, which I take as a sure sign of durability.
My wife decided she wanted to add the optional solid wood headboard to our purchase. This almost doubled our total investment, but the headboard completed the homely visual appearance she wanted.
Avocado offers the most comprehensive third-party certifications of all the bedroom furniture brands I tested. FSC for responsible forestry, GREENGUARD Gold for low emissions, GOTS and GOLS for organic materials, and Climate Neutral for carbon accounting, to name just a few.

✔ Supporting Reforestation
✔ Long-Lasting Quality
✔ Made in USA
Why It's the Best for Benches, Poufs & Ottomans: Medley makes natural wood furniture to order in the USA using FSC-certified hardwood and GOLS-certified natural latex. The brand offers hundreds of custom upholstery options with low-VOC finishes, and a lifetime warranty covers all springs and structural frames.
Personal Experience: Having tested Medley's Lala Sofa for my furniture brand review, I was impressed by the construction quality and the use of sustainable materials. In fact, I was so impressed that when my wife said we needed a bench for our bedroom, Medley was the obvious choice.
The Medley Pax Bench she chose works well for both our needs. My wife needs a comfortable spot to sit while getting dressed, and I wanted something built with low-VOC, certified materials.
Our Medley bench is just as impressive as our Lala Sofa. The cushion (latex wrapped in soft wool) maintains its shape despite heavy daily use. The Pax Bench's construction feels solid when I move it to clean the floor underneath, and there are no loose joints or creaking frame.

✔ Supporting Fair Trade
✔ Unique Artisan Production
✔ Long-Lasting Heirloom Quality
Why It's the Best for Mirrors & Headboards: The Citizenry is the largest US home retailer to have 100% of its products guaranteed by the WFTO. It sells stunning mirrors, dressers, nightstands, and headboards handcrafted by fair-trade artisans using natural materials such as rattan, cane, and hinoki.
Personal Experience: I decided to try out The Citizenry's Hinoki Wood Floor Mirror and Java Rattan Headboard during the remodeling of our guest room. My wife wanted a mirror and headboards with verified sourcing, so The Citizenry was the perfect choice because of its 100% WFTO guarantee.
The Hinoki mirror arrived from a fourth-generation Japanese workshop in Okawa. The hinoki frame emitted a subtle, natural aroma when unpacked, and its pale tone brightens our bedroom without heavy finishing or stains.
Our Java headboard was made by an artisan group in Cirebon, Indonesia. It's handcrafted from locally sourced manau rattan, and the weave shows natural variations in color that I love. I found the Java's lightweight frame easier to install than the solid wood headboard from Avocado we have in our main bedroom.

✔ Carbon Offset Shipping
✔ Speak Direct to Sellers
✔ Recycled & Reclaimed Wood
Why It's the Best for Bookcases & Wardrobes: Etsy is the best marketplace for unique, often reclaimed or upcycled bookcases and wardrobes from independent artisan makers. Reusing old wood for bedroom furniture is a practical way to keep usable materials out of landfills and reduce the need for new logging.
The Etsy platform allows you to filter your search results by country. If you select the "Ships from United States" filter, you will see a long list of domestic sellers. However, this filter indicates the seller's shipping location and not necessarily where the item was made. Be sure to use the messaging system to clarify the country of manufacture with the seller if you have any doubts.
Avocado and Medley are also worth considering if USA-made furniture is your top priority, and you're willing to spend more on sustainable, new wooden furniture.
Personal Experience: Etsy's messaging system allowed me to easily contact three sellers and compare materials before ordering a small oak bookcase from a Pennsylvania maker.
The direct communication also worked well for verifying finish details. My seller confirmed she used Odie's Oil and salvaged barn wood. I couldn't independently verify her claims, but they made sense and matched the listing photos.
My bookcase arrived within two weeks, and it was exactly as advertised. Etsy offsets the shipping carbon automatically at no extra cost, which matters to me because furniture shipping generates a lot of emissions.
An extra level of caution is needed when using Etsy. You should research materials and dimensions carefully before ordering, because there's no sitewide warranty, and returns can be complicated with some sellers.
Etsy's Star Seller badge system is designed to make the process easier by highlighting reputable sellers. Star Sellers have a 95%+ response rate, ship on time consistently, and earn high ratings over multiple months.
A non-toxic bedroom should contain certified low-VOC, chemical-free furniture. Depending on the space you have available, this includes a dresser, nightstand, wardrobe, bench or ottoman, mattress, bed frame, and headboard.
If you don't have the time to compare all the individual furniture pieces yourself, here are our top picks in each of these categories.

Tip: Contact the seller before purchasing to find out where the wood came from. Look for reclaimed or repurposed wood, and avoid any engineered wood because it won't be certified.

I've tested a vast array of non-toxic mattresses over the years, and for me, the Plushbeds Botanical Bliss organic latex mattress is the one that stands out.

We researched over 20 non toxic furniture companies and spent five months testing products to find the safest, most sustainable options for your home.
My family and I, along with the rest of the team at The Roundup (Steph, Arabella, and Michael), tested each piece of furniture in real bedroom settings to evaluate performance, durability, and safety over time.
Here are the criteria we considered when rating each brand:
We rejected more than 17 brands that failed to meet our standards for transparency, sustainability, or quality. Only the brands you see recommended in this guide passed our rigorous evaluation.
We were not gifted any items by the brands featured. No brand is permitted to pay for inclusion in this list. Our recommendations are based solely on our testing experience and industry knowledge. We're committed to helping you create a healthier home.
We define bedroom furniture as non-toxic if it contains zero or no chemicals and has very low levels of VOC emissions.
Therefore, the composition of the core material (usually wood), upholstery, fabrics, glues, and finishes is important. Third-party certifications are very useful in confirming the emissions safety of furniture.
Choosing solid wood furniture and avoiding engineered wood is the best way to keep potentially toxic chemicals out of your bedroom.
Solid wood consists only of natural wood fibers, so the raw material contains no synthetic binders or composite resins.
Engineered wood (MDF, particleboard, and plywood) contains glues made with urea formaldehyde or other synthetic binders. As a result, engineered wood can release or "off-gas" VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds), which significantly impact indoor air quality (Perera et al., 2025; USDA; Adamova et al., 2020).
Some plywood is made with "low-emitting" or "no-added formaldehyde glues." When pieces do contain plywood, look for clear labels such as "no added formaldehyde" or "CARB Phase 2" compliance. For example, Medley uses some low-VOC CARB 2 compliant plywood in its dresser drawers.
Synthetic upholstered headboards, benches, and storage pieces are also potential sources of toxic substances.
Conventional foam often contains polyurethane made with petrochemical ingredients, and some products include organophosphate flame-retardants (Stapleton et al., 2009; Cooper et al., 2016). Polyester batting and synthetic fabrics can contain PFAS-based stain treatments or other finishing chemicals (EEA).
Safer options include organic latex foam, wool batting, cotton or linen fabrics, and upholstery labeled as untreated or having natural finishes.
When reviewing product details, check for chemical emissions or material certifications (see below). If no certifications are available, look for clear statements about foam type, fabric treatments, and the absence of chemical flame retardants.
The adhesive ratio in solid wood joinery is usually small compared to engineered wood panels. However, any glues and finishes need to be solvent-free for the furniture to be classed as non-toxic.
Clear coats, paints, lacquers, and stains can contain solvents that release VOCs during curing and, in some cases, for long periods after purchase (EPA).
Plant-based glues and water-based finishes generally contain fewer VOC sources, but the exact profile depends on the manufacturer. Look for products that are OEKO-TEX or Greenguard certified (see below) for assurance on safe emission levels.
These certifications help confirm that bedroom furniture meets strict chemical safety expectations. Each one applies to the materials commonly used in furniture, such as wood, textiles, foam, and surface finishes.
Avocado, Babyletto, Piccalio, and Brentwood Home are among the best brands for nursery and children's furniture.
Our roundup of non-toxic kids furniture brands has more details on these companies and the reasons why we recommend them.
If you have a baby or toddler, you'll also need a safe place for them to sleep.
Brands like Babyletto, Bloom, and Oeuf are all good for cribs. See our guide to non-toxic cribs to find a safe and chemical-free option.
Place the furniture in a well-ventilated area and keep windows open whenever possible. Fresh air reduces the concentration of VOCs that rise from finishes, glues, and composite parts.
Running an exhaust fan or using a HEPA air purifier with activated carbon helps speed the process. Keeping the room warm also helps VOCs clear faster.
If the weather allows, leaving the piece in a garage or covered outdoor space for a few days keeps most of the off-gassing away from the bedroom. Avoid sleeping in the same room until the smell noticeably weakens.
According to the World Health Organization, formaldehyde is a known human carcinogen, with long-term exposure linked to respiratory issues, as well as nasopharyngeal cancer.
Exposure to formaldehyde can occur through inhalation, skin contact, or ingestion, which is why it is important to purchase furniture that is certified as formaldehyde-free.
GreenGuard Gold certification is a designation given to products that meet rigorous standards for indoor air pollution. It is designed to prove that products are safe for use in environments such as bedrooms, where air quality is of the highest importance.
The GreenGuard Gold certification process, when applied to the furniture industry, involves intense and thorough tests for over 10,000 VOCs and chemicals that are known to pollute the air in your home.
The strict air quality limits for GreenGuard Gold include:
This label is particularly important if you are shopping for products such as furniture, flooring, and building materials, and many of the best organic bedroom furniture brands have achieved (or are working towards) certification
Secondhand wooden furniture is usually non-toxic but this depends on what it is made from and how long it has been owned previously.
It has the potential to be an excellent option for eco-friendly consumers as most of the VOC off-gassing should have already occurred.
However, it's important to examine the furniture closely, especially if it has been stored in an attic or basement, which could expose it to moisture, mold, and pests.
Yes, genuine rattan furniture is a great non-toxic option as it's made from natural materials and contains no synthetic chemicals.
Rattan is also very durable and stylish, making it perfect if you're looking to add charm to your bedroom.
Yes, provided you buy well-made metal furniture with no toxic coatings, it can be considered non-toxic.
However, I prefer real wood bedroom furniture. I discuss metal vs. wood in terms of bed frames in this article, and some of the points raised also apply to furniture in general.
Non-toxic furniture is essential for creating a healthy and sustainable sleep sanctuary.
When shopping for bedroom furniture, look for safety certifications, materials, and zero-VOC finishes that won't release harmful chemicals into your home.
Additionally, keep the manufacturing process in mind and always buy from sustainable brands that pay a living wage and treat their workers ethically.
By being mindful of these considerations and doing your homework (or letting me do it for you), you can ensure that your bedroom is free from toxins and will be a healthy place for sleep and relaxation.
What are your favorite sustainable furniture manufacturers? Do you prefer the warmth of wooden furniture? Or is the industrial look of metal furniture more your thing?
