In a previous article, I spoke about how Mrs. M tasked me to source the best organic floor cushions and eco-friendly bean bag chairs as a way to protect our sofa cushions from grass stains.

Floor cushions are great for meditation or relaxing for a short time. However, if you want to take your casual relaxation comfort to the next level, you need more support.

Step forward, bean bag chairs!

I had my favorite bean bag chair for gaming at college, but I doubt it was very eco-friendly (I can’t remember the brand, it was already in the dorm, and well worn, when I moved in).

I enjoyed reliving my college days and testing some of the best eco-friendly bean bag chairs on the market today.

So, if you’re looking for a way to make your home a little greener, check out these eco-friendly bean bag chairs!

Made from sustainable materials, they’re perfect for people who want to reduce their environmental impact. Not only are they environmentally friendly, but they’re also stylish and comfortable!

5 Best Eco-Friendly Bean Bag Chairs For A Greener Home

They Say: Our Play Couch for toddlers and kids is made greener by using BioFoam®, plus fabrics made from recycled plastics. Contains 6 pieces for more fun than other brands. Assembled in California. 100% carbon offset. Absolutely no flame retardants. The only Greenguard Gold and Formaldehyde-Free claim verified play couch on the market. Awarded 2021 Best Tested Product by Good Housekeeping.

We Say: Brentwood home makes my favorite organic floor cushions, and I can now safely say they also make my favorite kid’s play couch.

My girls are a bit too old and a bit too cool for this play couch…but I think it’s awesome!

It’s a play couch and a fort-building kit all in one. Hours of fun for active imaginations and then comfy enough for them to take a nap!

You get six pieces in the kit:

  • Speed Bumps (x2): 33” x 10” x 5”
  • Firm Triangles (x2): 22” x 16” x 13.80”
  • Thin Folding Cushion (x1): 66” x 33” x 3”
  • Firm Support Folding Base (x1): 66” x 33” x 5”

And a choice of six colors:

  • Treehouse Green
  • Play Fort Pink
  • Sea Captain Blue
  • Emoji Yellow
  • Play All Gray
  • Orange You Glad

The covers are certified by the Global Recycled Standard (GRS) and are a mix of polyester, nylon, and 29% REPEVE® (made from recycled plastic bottles).

The foam cushions are CertiPUR-US certified and contain 20% plant-based foam.

I may have pushed the brief a little here (this play couch is obviously not a bean bag chair).

However, it is an incredibly comfy, versatile, and child-friendly seating solution that’s GREENGUARD Gold certified and Formaldehyde Free.

Not sure that your kid will love this play couch? Not a problem! You can try it out for 30-days and return for a full refund if you’re not 100% satisfied.

A one-year warranty also covers you against manufacturing defects for extra peace of mind.

They Say: Our handmade bean bags are made from our own shredded natural latex encased in a cotton twill casing, plus a removable organic cotton cover of your choice! Bean bag chairs are fun and comfortable. Eco-friendly bean bag chairs are even better because they give you peace of mind that you are doing right by the environment.

We Say: Ok. So this bean bag almost didn’t make the list due to its incredibly high price point. But, in the end, it had to be included because it’s one of the best eco-friendly bean bags you can buy.

The materials used to make this bean bag chair are as good as it gets. Shredded natural latex stuffed into an organic cotton cover (available in 18 different patterns and colors).

The shredded latex filling is highly supportive and doesn’t lose its shape like other bean bags. It’s also great for people with allergies because it’s naturally hypoallergenic.

So, if money is no object, then this bean bag, handmade in the U.S., is the one for you.

However, if you’re looking for more value for money, you might want to check out the next offering from White Lotus Home.

They Say: Our evergreen foam is manufactured 100% in the United States from a mixture of natural plant-based oils and conventional non-toxic polyols. All foam is a man-made product derived from some kind of oil, and the foam we use is certified to be derived from blended natural ingredients. Our foam is as green as foam gets, with no heavy metal additives and no petroleum-sourced chemicals of any kind!

We Say: This bean bag from White Lotus Home is significantly cheaper than the one above and is still handmade in the U.S. to exacting standards.

There are two differences:

  1. Standard cotton is used instead of organic cotton. This is not ideal. However, White Lotus Home assures me that the cotton used is a natural fabric containing no harmful chemicals.
  2. Evergreen foam is used instead of natural latex. Evergreen foam is manufactured in the U.S. from a mixture of natural plant-based oils and conventional non-toxic polyols. It’s a non-toxic and cost-effective alternative to natural latex.

This bean bag is not quite as supportive as the shredded latex option, but it’s still very comfortable and ideal for drifting off outside with a gentle breeze running through your hair (if I had any!).

They Say: Modern deep green knit bean bag chair! This lounging floor pillow is awesome for adults, teens, and kids to rest on it. A minimalist furniture piece for your living room or entertainment space that gives you all the comfort and style to your interior decor. Recycled cotton yarn, itch-free fiber, doesn’t shrink or pill like wool fiber. An eco-friendly product!

We Say: This is why Etsy is one of my favorite zero-waste online retailers…where else can you get a knitted bean bag chair!

This is not a filled bean bag. You’re buying the cover and inner liner, that you can then fill with a filling of your choice. I used the recycled and non-toxic EPS beads from Bean Products.

The cover is a thing of beauty. Expertly hand knitted from soft but durable recycled cotton yarn. Ana is truly a skilled artisan when it comes to knitting.

The great thing about filling your own cover is that you can get the exact level of comfort to suit your preference.

This item is handmade in Portugal, so there is quite a hefty cost to ship to the U.S. (around $53). Totally worth it in my eyes to get an eco-friendly and bespoke handmade bean bag.

You don’t have to worry about the environmental impact of shipping. Etsy will offset the carbon emissions from delivery and packaging on this purchase.

In fact, the whole order is worry-free because Etsy Purchase Protection also covers it. This ensures that you’ll get a full refund if your item doesn’t arrive, arrives damaged, or isn’t as described.

Not that this will be an issue. Ana is a five-star seller with over 3,000 happy customers to her name.

They Say: Lovely rustic Scandinavian style adult bean bag chair. Minimalist natural linen fabric floor pillow seating! Hygge home decor! Inspired by nature!

We Say: Like the idea of a handmade bean bag cover from an Etsy artisan that you fill yourself but are not prepared to pay over 50 bucks in shipping? Then this lovely linen number from Cloud Makers could be perfect for you.

Made from a blend of local Lithuanian natural linen and cotton, it’s not the softest cover on the list. However, it has the feel of quality, and I’ve no doubt it’ll last many years.

U.S. shipping is free and takes between two and four weeks.

Etsy will offset the carbon emissions from delivery and packaging, so you don’t have to worry about the carbon footprint associated with international orders.

Eco-Friendly Bean Bag - Buyer's Guide

Materials

Eco-friendly bean bag chairs are made with non-toxic and eco-friendly materials. That includes the outer cover, the inner liner, and the filling.

Organic and natural materials are better for the planet and your health because they don’t off-gas potentially toxic chemicals like some non-eco-friendly materials (polyester, for example).

Some eco-friendly bean bag chair materials to look out for include:

  • Organic Cotton
  • Hemp
  • Linen
  • Natural Latex
  • Cork
  • Kapok Fiber
  • Buckwheat Hulls
  • Recycled Polystyrene

Well-known and respected environmental certifications can help you avoid greenwashing, assuring you that the materials in your bean bag chair are as environmentally friendly as the makers claim.

The following are some of the best eco-certifications available for filler materials and fabric used in bean bag chairs:

Ethical Business Practices

Environmental certifications are also an excellent way to ensure that your bean bag chair is made with eco-friendly materials and has been manufactured by a company committed to ethical business practices.

Some of the best green business certifications to keep an eye out for when shopping for bean bag chairs include:

Bean Bag Shapes

Bean bag chairs come in all sorts of shapes and sizes. The most common are:

  • Oval
  • Round
  • Tear Drop
  • Pillow
  • Cube
  • Lounge Chair

DIY Bean Bag Chair

If you’re handy with a sewing machine, you might want to consider making your own bean bags.

All you need is some sustainable fabric for the outer bean bag cover, and an eco-friendly bean bag filling, such as:

  • Dry Rice
  • Dry Beans
  • Dry Peas
  • Buckwheat Hulls

There are loads of tutorials on YouTube if you get stuck.

My favorite tip is to use your children’s stuffed toys to fill bean bags. Free filling and less clutter all in one fell swoop…GENIUS!

Most Bean Bag Chairs Are Not Eco-Friendly

The majority of mainstream bean bag chairs are filled with virgin polystyrene balls.

Polystyrene is a plastic made from styrene (a suspected carcinogen).

The production of polystyrene is often damaging to the environment due to the harsh chemicals used, such as benzene and hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs).

So. There you have it. All the information and options you need to choose between eco-friendly bean bag chairs and organic floor cushions.

I’ve actually chosen both.
