Our 5 Favorite Organic Blankets for Sustainable Snuggling

Later in this article, I'll discuss precisely what to look for when shopping for a new blanket.

But first, I'll skip to the good bit and reveal my favorite throws and blankets of 2024.

They Say: Beloved for its breathable weight and touchable texture, the Waffle Bed Blanket is plusher and springier than any other waffle fabric. It starts with the highest quality threads sourced from the finest long-staple 100% organic cotton on earth.

We Say: I love Boll & Branch and have used/recommended them for many products (mattress protectors and cotton comforters to name just two).

The love most definitely continues with this Boll & Branch waffle blanket.

It's a luxurious all-season blanket made from the softest organic cotton and crafted with precision using their proprietary interlocking waffle weave.

Although marketed as a bed blanket, I don't see why you'd confine this beauty to the bedroom. With the wide range of color and size options available, this blanket would not look out of place in most rooms of most homes.

Also, if the waffle look is not for you, cable knit and branch knit organic cotton blankets are also available.

The thick, plush fabric provides a comfortable yet resilient feel, which gets even cozier after being washed (I've washed mine four times so far, and it's now buttery soft).

You can tumble dry this fabric on low heat. However, I prefer to line dry and then pop in the drier for a few minutes to fluff it up. This saves electricity and extends the usable life of the blanket.

This fantastic blanket is Fairtrade certified, STANDARD 100 by OEKO-TEX verified, and made using GOTS-certified organic cotton.

Free US shipping is available, and you can return this blanket (unused) for free within the first 30 days if you change your mind.

This waffle blanket is an ethically-made and luxurious touch of style that will add comfort and warmth to any room.

We Say: The Makemake Organics Chunky Knit Throw Blanket is the perfect addition to any home.

It's made with 100% organic cotton, so it's gentle on delicate skin and hypoallergenic for those prone to allergies.

Although made with babies in mind, this throw blanket is perfect for anyone looking for a small blanket that packs a big eco punch.

It has a classic design and comes in four beautiful colors, making it an heirloom-quality piece that also serves as a cozy piece of home decor.

The modern chunky knit weave adds texture without being too bold or overpowering.

This blanket provides excellent warmth and a cuddly feel (perfect for snuggling up on cold winter nights).

It's also ethically made. The Fairtrade certification ensures that workers are treated fairly, and using 100% GOTS-certified organic means this blanket has been crafted with love from non-toxic and eco-friendly materials.

Looking for icing on the cake? For every purchase, Makemake Organics will plant one tree to help restore the environment.

This blanket is an excellent addition to any home and a beautiful way to show your support for an ethically run business.

They Say: Stray & Wander offers a curated collection of ethically sourced Turkish towels and blankets. We believe in buying ethically and buying less.

We Say: This incredibly high-quality blanket from Stray & Wander is a versatile masterpiece that's equally at home in a park or on the beach as it is on your sofa or bed.

During my durability washing tests of this organic cotton blanket, it got softer every time. For best results, wash in cold water (the eco setting on your machine should be perfect), and don't use any bleach or fabric softener.

If the styling of the Dream Blanket is not to your liking, don't worry, Stray & Wander has plenty of other organic Turkish cotton blankets for you to choose from:

Stray & Wander is a company that carefully selects ethically sourced products from different parts of the world.

It collaborates with women's cooperatives, family businesses, and individual artisans to bring beautiful handmade and fair trade products to the global market.

Quality blankets. Solid ethics. Win-Win!

Price Range: $459
Certifications: B Corp, 1% for the Planet, Climate Neutral Certified

They Say: Luxurious, exclusive, and sustainably made with the finest fabrics, our limited edition merino wool, cashmere, organic cotton, and recycled cotton throws will add an elegant, warm touch to any room in your home.

We Say: Avocado makes some of my favorite sleep and relaxation products. Well…now they've come to the party with a stunning range of blankets.

The Avocado Cashmere Throw Blanket is the epitome of luxury and exclusivity.

The blanket is made without any added dyes or harmful chemicals, using only pure cashmere raw materials through a time-consuming process that produces softer and thicker, durable fibers.

It's made from 100% cashmere wool that comes from Inner Mongolia. Cashmere wool is finer, more robust, lighter, and around three times more insulating than sheep wool.

The artisan craftsmanship that has created this throw blanket creates an exquisite look that will impress even the most discerning of eyes.

This blanket is Climate Neutral Certified. I also love that Avocado is a Certified B Corporation and a member of 1% for the Planet (a sure sign that you're dealing with a company with seriously impressive ethics and eco-credentials).

With proper care, this blanket will last a lifetime and become an heirloom piece passed down through generations. It's dry clean only, so don't be tempted to put it in the washing machine. It's a significant investment that you should only trust with a professional dry cleaner.

Materials: 100% Organic Cotton (10lbs), 95% Organic Cotton and 5% Spandex (15lbs, 20lbs, 25lbs)

They Say: A knitted weighted blanket to help you sleep better and feel calmer, naturally.

We Say: Research suggests that weighted blankets may help with autism, anxiety, and insomnia.

However, many weighted blankets on the market get their weight from heavy plastic or glass beads, which is not the most eco-friendly solution!

So, when I heard about the Bearaby Cotton Napper (a weighted blanket made from GOTS-certified organic cotton), I had to take a look.

I'm a stats geek and have tracked my sleep metrics (skin temperature, resting heart rate, HRV, respiratory rate, etc.) for years.

During the nights I tested the Cotton Napper, my resting heart rate was reduced by an average of 5 BPM. This is an unscientific test, but it does appear that (in my limited experience) weighted blankets can lead to more relaxing sleep.

It feels super soft on the skin and is versatile enough to be used as a bedspread or snuggled up in front of the TV.

The weight is evenly distributed throughout, giving you a secure feeling without any weight 'hotspots.'

The colors are stunning, and the craftsmanship is top-notch. Plus, you can rest assured that this product has been ethically made to Fairtrade-certified standards.

It's even machine washable (just double-check that your washing machine can take the weight of the blanket before washing it for the first time).

This Bearaby organic cotton throw perfectly combines luxurious comfort and sustainability.  It's an excellent choice for anyone who wants a warm blanket to turn their bedroom (or any room for that matter) into an oasis of relaxation.

One thing I need to point out is that only the 10lb option is 100% organic cotton. The heavier options are a spandex cotton blend.

However, this is not a deal breaker for me. Life is often about compromises, and 5% spandex is acceptable here for the added strength and durability it provides to the Bearaby range of organic throws.

Go on…treat yourself to some weighted organic cotton blanket luxury!

Review Criteria: How We Chose the Best Sustainable Blankets

When evaluating different organic throws and blankets, I considered several key factors. When it comes to choosing the best option for your needs, these are the criteria you should look at.

Materials

The materials used are a crucial factor when it comes to your blanket's sustainability status.

I only chose blankets made from natural, organic materials containing no toxins or chemicals.

Company Ethics

It's important to know where and how the blankets are made.

I carefully checked each company's ethics and labor practices to ensure they weren't exploiting any workers or resources.

Eco-Credentials

Knowing that your blanket is environmentally friendly is essential.

I researched the sustainability credentials of each of the blankets on my list.

Certifications

The best way to avoid greenwashing and ensure that the company ethics and eco-credentials of your organic blanket are all they claim to be is to look out for certifications from trusted third-party organizations.

Some of the best to look out for include:

Price

In my research, I found a wide range of prices for sustainable blankets. However, you don't have to break the bank to get a high-quality product.

From excellent budget options to high-end luxury, I've made recommendations suitable for all budgets while maintaining excellent sustainability credentials.

Snuggable Softness

I tested each blanket for comfort and warmth.

After all, the most sustainable blanket in the world won't be worth much if it isn't cozy and never gets used.

Durability

This factor is especially important since you don't want to replace your organic blanket too often due to wear and tear.

To test this, I washed and dried each blanket multiple times before making my final decision.

Size, Thickness & Color/Design

Blankets come in a wide range of sizes, from single-person organic throw blankets to huge heavy blankets to cover your entire family.

On top of that, there's also the thickness factor to consider. Do you want something lightweight or a weighted blanket?

Finally, while not essential, it's always nice to have a selection of color or design options to choose from so you can find something that perfectly matches your existing decor.

New Throws Too Expensive? Consider Buying Second-Hand

If you're looking for a good deal and don't mind not having the latest styles, why not consider buying second-hand?

Second-hand blankets are great value for money, reduce waste and prevent perfectly good blankets from going to landfill.

To find the best second-hand deals, look out for local listings in your area on social media. Visiting local thrift shops (especially those in affluent neighborhoods) can also yield excellent results.

Just be sure to wash any item of second-hand bedding before using it.

What Are Medical Rescue Blankets?

Rescue blankets are thin foil blankets used in emergency and life-threatening situations.

The Final Word

So there you have it, a detailed breakdown of the organic blanket that impressed me the most during testing.

Yes, the list is a bit organic cotton blanket heavy. I did test other materials (hemp, bamboo, etc.), but most of the blankets that blew me away just happened to be made from organic cotton.
