Are you the proud owner of a fancy new mattress and now looking for a way to protect your investment from wear, tear, and stains?

The good news is that an organic waterproof mattress protector will solve your mattress protection problems, while not harming your health or the environment.

The bad news is that it can be next to useless if you don't know how to put on a mattress protector properly.

The good news (again) is you've come to the right place. I have years of sleep product testing, and my research approach is borderline obsessive!

Read on as I discuss all the mattress protection options available and how best to use them.

Mattress Protector

A mattress protector is a thin mattress cover (often waterproof) that goes over your mattress to keep it safe from accidents, spills, and sweat.

Be sure to get an organic and non-toxic mattress protector. Synthetic ones can release harmful chemicals while you sleep!

Mattress Pad

A mattress pad is a thin sheet placed over the entire surface area of a mattress.

It provides a layer of protection against dust or dirt, prevents compression, and prolongs your mattress's life.

Pads are usually thinner than toppers but thicker than protectors.

Mattress Topper

A mattress topper is an additional layer of cushioning placed on top of the mattress. It adds softness, comfort, and support and helps protect the mattress from wear and tear.

They are the thickest and most comfortable type of mattress protection.

In my full organic mattress topper article, I explain the benefits and give my thoughts on the best mattress toppers to buy.

Mattress Encasement

A mattress encasement is like a complete bodyguard for your mattress.

This zippered protector fits snugly around your mattress's top and bottom sides to form an impenetrable barrier against damage, allergens, bed bugs, moisture, and stains.

How To Fit Your Mattress Protection Properly

Now you know the difference between the most common types of mattress protection, let's look at exactly how you put them on your mattress.

Mattress Protector Fitting Guide

Protectors can be a bit different to fit than toppers and pads. They often surround the entire mattress (or at least the top and sides), so it may need a little more effort to fit correctly.

  1. Select a mattress protector that fits snugly around your mattress
  2. Ensure all four corners are lined up, and then tuck all excess material between the base of your mattress and bed frame
  3. As with toppers and pads, finishing off your mattress protector with quality sheets and other bedding will help elevate your sustainable slumber to the next level

Mattress Pad Fitting Guide

  1. You'll want to select a mattress pad that matches the size of your mattress
  2. Make sure that all corners are lined up correctly, and tuck in any extra material
  3. Most pads have an elasticized band around the edges, which will help keep it in place throughout the night
  4. Once you're happy with the fit, add sustainable sheets and other fair trade bedding options to help you drift off and get your recommended hours of sleep every night

Mattress Topper Fitting Guide

Mattress toppers fit in the same way as mattress pads.

  1. First and foremost, you'll need to choose the right size for your mattress. Ensure your mattress's dimensions match those of the mattress topper for it to fit correctly.
  2. Once you have the correct size, place it on top of your existing mattress and smooth it out so that any creases disappear entirely. Some latex and memory foam toppers might need time to fully expand and off-gas.
  3. Secure your mattress topper to your mattress. This is usually done by straps on each corner of the mattress protector that tuck securely under the corners of your mattress.
  4. Once secured, ensure everything is lined up correctly, as this will help with temperature control and create a comfortable sleeping experience.
  5. Now for the final step, adding sheets. Make sure that whatever sheets you use are made from natural materials. This will help add an extra layer of warmth while remaining breathable throughout the night.

Mattress Encasement Fitting Guide

Fitting a mattress encasement is trickier than the other options, and I recommend tackling it as a two-person job.

  1. If your encasement is new, remove it from its packaging and lay it flat for a few hours to air out.
  2. Ensure the floor at the foot of your bed is clean and tidy.
  3. Carefully slide the mattress down and over the foot of the bed.
  4. Lower the end of the mattress to the floor so that it stays in place due to its weight.
  5. Place the zippered mattress encasement over the top two corners of your mattress.
  6. Pull the mattress encasement down the mattress gradually and carefully. Be sure to avoid getting the zippered edge caught on the mattress fabric.
  7. Gently lift the end of the mattress off the floor and back onto the bed frame when you reach the lower end.
  8. Pull the mattress encasement over the rest of the mattress.
  9. Carefully close the zipper to secure the mattress encasement around the mattress fully.
  10. Put the mattress back in its proper place.
  11. Add your favorite sheets, pillows, and non-toxic duvet insert, and enjoy the feeling of the crisp new bedding as you drift off.

Caring For Your Mattress Protection

Mattress toppers and pads are often too bulky to be machine-washed.

Mattress encasements and protectors can usually be washed in cool water with mild laundry detergent.

Line dry whenever possible. If you need to use the dryer, select the low-heat option.

Also, always check the care label for any special care instructions.
