In 2024 more and more people are waking up to the benefits of bamboo sheet sets.
They're naturally soft, antibacterial, moisture-wicking, and breathable. This prevents even the hottest sleepers from overheating during the night.
Plus, they don't contain any of the synthetic dyes and chemicals you'll find in some traditional bedding.
But greenwashing is a problem. Some manufacturers market their sheets as sustainable when they actually contain only a small percentage of bamboo.
So how can you tell the genuine bamboo bedding sets from those that only claim to be?
After personally testing some of the most amazing organic bamboo sheets on the market I'm delighted to share the results with you today...
✔ Organically Grown Bamboo
✔ Certified Free of Harmful Chemicals
✔ Eco-Friendly Packaging
We Say: I briefly mentioned Simply Organic Bamboo when I used a twin sheet set to cover my daughter's Puffy Mattress as part of my latex-free mattress review.
But these bamboo viscose sheets deserve more than a brief mention. This is a genuinely excellent product that everybody should know about.
The material has a silky soft feel without being thin or flimsy.
These sheets and pillowcases are breathable yet substantial enough to keep you warm in winter and cool in summer, making them ideal for all seasons.
The generously sized fitted sheet fits mattresses up to 18'' thick, and the double-stitched construction ensures it's durable enough to stand up to everyday wear and tear.
The pillowcases are finished off with beautiful envelope closures for a neat and stylish look.
The best part? The entire set is certified by OEKO-TEX Standard 100 as being free of harmful chemicals, making it a safe choice for you and your family.
Not a single scrap of this amazing bamboo fabric is wasted unnecessarily. Offcuts from sheet and pillow manufacture are reused to produce the outer storage bag. A really nice touch!
If you're looking for a luxurious and affordable sheet set that's also good for your health and the environment, this is the one for you.
✔ Fully Organic Bamboo
✔ Perfect Sleep Temperature
✔ OEKO-TEX Certified
We Say: Ettitude sheets are simply stunning! They're silky smooth (without being too slippy) and they feel luxurious to the touch. I found these OEKO-TEX-certified bamboo sheets to be a joy to sleep on.
They kept my body temperature perfectly regulated for eight hours of Goldilocks sleep (not too hot, not too cold, just right!).
You get a choice of 12 colors and I tested the Moon option. I'm sure you'll find a color to match your decor.
Ettitude’s eco-credentials include Certified B Corporation, 1 % For The Planet, and Climate Neutral Certified. The bamboo comes from Forest Stewardship Council certified forests, so you know it is sustainably grown.
Ettitude has also committed to only working with cut and sew factories certified by globally recognized ethical third-party auditors.
We Say: High-quality eco-friendly bamboo viscose sheet sets for only $100? It sounded too good to be true…so I had to investigate further!
It turns out it really is true!
These sateen weave bed sheets feel amazing to the touch. So amazingly soft and cooling.
The 16” deep pocketing means these sheets will fit most mattress thicknesses, and five color options are available (White, Sand, Light Grey, Soft Blush, Charcoal).
When I inquired about their certification status, I was impressed by how quickly Quince replied and that they’re working towards being Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) certified.
The way Quince works (selling directly from the manufacturer to the customer) means they can offer high-quality products at incredibly competitive prices.
If all that's not enough, Quince also offers free standard shipping and a 365-day return policy. This gives you a full year trial period to test these sheets in the comfort of your bedroom.
Used and washed sheets will be accepted for return. You do need to return the whole set in the original packaging, though, so make sure you keep it all…just in case!
✔ Super Soft Sateen Weave Material
✔ OEKO-TEX Certified
✔ Guaranteed for Life
We Say: This luxurious sheet set from Sweet ZZZ had the highest thread count of any that I tested - and it shows.
The brand says that its bamboo sheets feel softer than 1000 TC Egyptian cotton and I would personally go along with that.
I've never felt a softer sheet than this - and I've tested many.
What amazed me is that a material this soft can also be so durable. This is due to the fiber length and the alignment in the yarn (longer fibers tend to be stronger).
Sweet ZZZ is so confident about the quality of its product that it offers a lifetime warranty, as well as free shipping and a 50-day return policy.
The care instructions state to lay the sheets flat when they are still slightly damp in order to reduce wrinkling. I would recommend you do that, as I did have an issue with wrinkling at first but after taking this advice it was soon fixed on future washes.
I struggled to find anything but positive feedback in the customer reviews. The only negative was that some people felt their pillows slid around inside the cover.
I use standard-size organic pillows and didn't experience that, so I can only assume it is a potential issue if you have smaller pillows.

We Say: These sheets were a joy to test. They're very comfortable, allow air to flow, and are well made (so they should last a long time!).
I appreciate that these sheets stay in place throughout the night. The deep pockets provide a snug fit for even the deepest mattress, and the added 12" length to the flat top sheet prevents it from coming untucked.
I also love that they're hypoallergenic and resistant to bacteria, so they stay fresh for longer.
The pillowcases included in this set also feel silky soft and lovely to rest my head on after a busy day.
BedVoyage uses organically grown Moso bamboo. There are no official certifications available at this time. However, it's been confirmed to me that all of the fabric used is organic.
BedVoyage also chose to change its manufacturing partner from China to India. You can find out more about the brand in my BedVoyage review.
We Say: This is another bamboo sheet set at the $100 price point that impressed me during testing.
There are some negative reviews on Amazon about these sheets being polyester and not bamboo.
I’ve spoken to the manufacturer, and they confirm that they sent a small number of customers the wrong sheet sets.
The viscose sheet set I was sent was definitely one hundred percent bamboo.
The sateen weave had a silky soft feel that was maybe slightly too slippery for my preference. However, that's just me being picky - sateen sheets tend to be that way and it's a matter of personal preference. The overall comfort of this bamboo sheet set was excellent.
You can also sleep safe in the knowledge that these sheets contain no toxic ingredients, thanks to the OEKO-TEX certification.
The fitted sheet is deep-pocketed and designed to fit mattresses up to 16” deep.
Bamboo is such a sustainable crop that is incredibly sustainable and environmentally friendly even if it is not GOTS certified.
Buying your sheets from an ethical brand/manufacturer is just as important as the quality of the raw materials used.
Here are some of the sheets I tested that don't have certification, but are (in my view) still a good eco-friendly choice:
We Say: This PlushBeds bamboo sheet set is made from rayon, which can be one of the less "green" fabrics made from bamboo. However, after thoroughly researching how PlushBeds sources its rayon, I’m happy that these sheets are sustainable and free of toxins.
The texture of the sheet surface created by the bamboo rayon was the silkiest of all the sheets I tested. This, combined with the natural anti-bacterial and anti-allergenic properties of bamboo, makes this sheet set perfect for those with sensitive skin.
The extra-deep pockets of the fitted sheet mean it will fit any mattress depth from 6” to 22”.
This eco-friendly bamboo sheet set is good value for money. It's covered by a five-year warranty, and shipping is free on all orders delivered within the contiguous U.S.
✔ Carbon Neutral Product
✔ OEKO-TEX Certified
✔ Includes Extra Fitted Sheet
We Say: I was mightily impressed with the eco-credentials of Cariloha when I tested their men's bamboo pajama pants, so I was looking forward to also testing their bamboo viscose sheets.
I was mightily impressed once again!
The twill weave is super soft but has a more cotton-like feel than most other sheets I tested. Perfect for those who love cloud-like softness without too much slide.
Cariloha claims its OEKO-TEX certified sheets are softer than 1,000-thread Egyptian cotton sheets. They could have a point.
The viscose used for these eco-friendly bamboo sheets is extracted using Cariloha's earth-friendly bamboo process.
I love that the Cariloha bamboo sheet set includes two fitted sheets (most only come with one), giving you a handy spare.
This brand also makes an excellent bamboo mattress if you want to complete the ultimate sustainable bedroom.
We Say: Layla is a brand I’ve been aware of ever since I tested their copper-infused memory foam mattress.
I love the Layla bamboo sheets because they offer the same excellent 120-night home trial as they do for their mattress.
This gives you plenty of time to - literally - sleep on your purchase and decide if it’s right for you. Simply email Layla to initiate a return for a full refund if you decide it's not.
There’s also a five-year warranty to protect you from manufacturing defects.
The Layla sheets were very nice to sleep on. The viscose fabric feels silky smooth, and I found the temperature regulation to be spot on.
One potential downside is the lack of color options (only white and gray are available). If you’re looking for more colorful bamboo sheets, then Layla is not for you.
Some people question whether or not bamboo is actually sustainable.
The answer is that it is, in theory, but you have to be careful to avoid synthetic fabrics containing 1% bamboo and claiming to be sustainable.
So to help you do that, here are the criteria I used to select the bamboo bedding above.
The best way to ensure that the material used in your bamboo sheets is sustainable is to look out for official certifications, such as:
Most bamboo sheets tend to come in one of three weave types:
Some so-called bamboo sheets only contain a small percentage of bamboo material.
100% bamboo sheets are definitely the best you can buy. However, they’re also the most expensive.
Many brands/manufacturers will mix bamboo with other fabrics to reduce costs. The most common mix is 50% bamboo and 50% cotton. Ideally, look for organic cotton.
The general rule of thumb is the lower the bamboo content, the lower the quality of the sheets.
Steer clear of bamboo mixed with high levels of synthetic fabrics or unspecified microfibres.
Bamboo fabric is naturally softer than cotton, so the thread count of bamboo sheets is lower than cotton sheets.
A thread count of 250 - 350 will result in luxuriously soft bedding.
Fitted sheets are elasticated and easy to fit change.
Flat sheets are basically big rectangles of fabric that need to be tucked under the mattress to hold them in place.
One thing to bear in mind is the depth of your mattress. If you have a deep mattress, you might need deeper sheets.
There are four main types of bamboo fabric:
A high price does not always indicate a better product.
However, from my experience of testing/researching for this article, price is a good indicator of your sheets' quality and eco-credentials.
I recommend spending at least $100 to ensure you’re getting a non-toxic and sustainable product. That doesn't mean you can't get good value for money though. There are several great sheet sets I tested that sell for around the hundred dollar mark.
A higher thread count is not only a sign of softer sheets. It can also help with increased durability.
Correct washing (see below) will also boost the durability of your bamboo sheets.
We checked all the products we reviewed for any signs of wrinkling or loose threads (and rejected any that didn't seem like they would last the distance).
The fibers in bamboo fabrics are shorter than those in cotton, so they need to be treated with care.
Bamboo fabrics are suitable for machine washing, but you should always wash bamboo sheets in cold water. No fabric softener is needed due to the natural softness of the short fibers.
Doing so will reduce pilling, help prevent loose seams, and help keep your bamboo sheets softer for longer. It also has the bonus side effect of using less energy.
Not necessarily. Bamboo sheets that are certified non-toxic can be eco-friendly, even if not organic. They are often better for the environment than regular cotton, nylon, or polyester sheets.
Yes - bamboo sheets are usually more eco-friendly than cotton, nylon, or polyester. Much depends on how it is grown, harvested, and manufactured.
You can rest assured that the bamboo sheet brands I have recommended above all source their material in an eco-friendly way. But not all brands do this.
Hot sleepers and allergy sufferers will get the most benefit from bamboo sheets because they are temperature-regulating and hypoallergenic, and have moisture-wicking properties.
Looking at the broader picture, if you are choosing bamboo sheets in preference to bedding made from synthetic fiber, then this helps the environment - so everybody benefits!
The downside to bamboo sheets is that they are often more expensive than other types of sheets and require gentle care and washing to maintain their softness and durability.
They can also be prone to wrinkling more easily, which means they may need more careful handling to keep them looking smooth.
The best type of bamboo for sheets is bamboo viscose, also known as bamboo rayon. Bamboo viscose offers a soft, silky feel, excellent durability, and good moisture-wicking properties, making it ideal for comfortable and breathable bedding.
The best thread count for bamboo sheets typically ranges from 300 to 500 threads per square inch. This thread count strikes a balance between softness, durability, and breathability, providing a luxurious feel while still allowing for good airflow and moisture absorption.
While it's true that a lot of bamboo sheets come from China, you can still get brands made in different countries (including the U.S.). I’ve tried to include a mix of countries of origin in my recommendations.
Yes. Bamboo sheets are warm in the winter and cool in the summer.
The CozyEarth Bamboo Sheet Set made it onto a list of Oprah's Favorite Things. I did test the Cozy Earth Bamboo Sheet set, and they're decent viscose sheets. However, they faced stiff competition and didn't quite make the list.
Oprah might have expensive tastes, but the Cozy Earth sheets were twice the price of my top pick, and they didn't offer anything extra to justify that.
If anything, the bamboo fabric from SimplyOrganic was a more durable, more lightweight material with a nicer texture and more effective moisture-wicking properties.
As an increasingly popular eco material, bamboo fiber is a wonderful natural resource. It’s fast-growing and sustainable, and it's no wonder eco-conscious shoppers are attracted to bamboo products.
However, some of the processes used by some companies to turn bamboo into fabric are anything but sustainable.
The SimplyOrganic bamboo sheet set came out top in my tests, and I highly recommend it.
Lyocell sheets offer the best balance of eco-friendliness and affordability.
Viscose and rayon are also acceptable, providing that you’re confident it's been produced in an eco-friendly fashion.
Your natural bamboo sheets will get plenty of daily use. I recommend spending as much as you can afford to get the best quality possible.
Our core values mean we always prioritize sustainability over profit. We carefully evaluate and personally test every product to ensure they meet our high standards. All products recommended in this article were tested in accordance with our Review Methodology.
