Are you tired of sleeping on a mattress full of allergens and dust mites?

Bamboo is hypoallergenic and naturally resistant to bacteria, mold, and mildew. Investing in the best bamboo mattress you can afford will help you sleep easy, knowing your mattress no longer harbors any harmful allergens.

Bamboo is the new black...or should that be green? It’s all the rage when it comes to sustainable materials.

But are bamboo mattresses all they’re made out to be? Do they really compare to the other types of environmentally friendly mattress on the market?

I’ve slept on it for you and have the definitive answer!

The Five Best Bamboo Mattresses To Help You Sleep Like A Panda Cub

Sizes: Twin, Twin XL, Full, Queen, King, Cal King, Split King
Sleep Trial: 100 Nights
Warranty: 10 years
Shipping: Free shipping

We Say: This CertiPUR-US certified mattress caught my eye when I tested the excellent Cariloha OEKO-TEX bamboo sheets and pajamas, and I couldn’t wait to get my hands on it.

It was well worth the wait!

The Cariloha bamboo mattress hits the mark for comfort. It’s supportive, cooling, and very comfortable. There’s very little motion transfer meaning it’s perfect for couples where one is a restless sleeper.

The mattress cover is also removable and machine-washable, which is a big bonus.

There is no such thing as a 100% bamboo mattress. However, this is what I would classify as a proper bamboo mattress. It’s quality bamboo-infused foam covered in sustainable bamboo fabric. Not some horrible slab of cheap memory foam covered in bamboo fabric of questionable origin.

The mattress is 10” thick, and the cover is fully removable and machine washable. Just remember to wash it on a cool setting.

The firmness of this mattress is medium-firm.

If you don’t like medium-firm mattresses, you might want to go for the Cariloha Resort Bamboo Mattress instead.

It’s got all the eco-friendly comfort of the Classic, with just three differences:

  1. It’s more expensive
  2. It’s 2” thicker
  3. It’s rated as medium-soft

Both mattresses are incredible. The only real drawback is the price tag. However, given the quality of the material and construction, I think they’re well worth the investment.

I also love that Cariloha offsets the emissions produced by their products. The 118.80 kgs of carbon generated by this mattress are offset via multiple 3rd party verified schemes.

Pros & Cons

Made of plush viscose from bamboo
Body temperature control
Relieves pressure
Adapts to your body shape
Removable washable cover
Premium price tag - but worth it
Sizes: Twin, Twin XL, Full, Queen, King, Cal King, Split King
Sleep Trial: 100 Nights
Warranty: 10 years
Shipping: Free shipping

We Say: Lucid was not a mattress brand I was aware of before researching and testing for this article. This is surprising because I’ve slept on many mattresses over the years (and researched many more). Yes…it IS work!

With a comfortable memory foam layer, springs, and a supportive base, this mattress will help you sleep soundly through the night. The hybrid design means that you’ll get the benefits of both a memory foam mattress and a traditional mattress, making it the perfect choice for those who want a little bit of everything.

Don’t let the budget price tag put you off. This mattress has memory foam infused with bamboo and aloe vera, and it punches well above its weight in terms of performance.

You get the following high-performance spring and foam layers, all wrapped up in a super soft cover.

  1. 3.50” bamboo infused memory foam
  2. 3.50” aloe vera infused memory foam
  3. 2” support foam
  4. 6.50” individually wrapped support springs
  5. 6” edge support

This mattress is also CertiPUR-US certified, meaning it’s free of harmful chemicals and meets strict environmental, health, and safety standards.

The bamboo charcoal-infused memory foam and aloe vera work together to create a cooling effect, perfect for those who often wake up in a pool of their sweat. The support foam contours to your body to provide support where you need it most, while the springs offer a bit of bounce, so you don’t feel like you’re sinking into quicksand.

The edge support is a nice touch, as it means you can sleep right to the edge of the mattress without feeling like you’re going to roll off. This is perfect for couples who want to make the most of their sleeping surface! ????

The premium experience doesn’t stop at the materials either. You get 100 nights to try this mattress out at home and return it for a full refund if you’re not impressed.

If/when you decide to keep it, you can sleep sound knowing that a ten-year warranty covers you.

If you’re looking for a hybrid mattress that offers a premium experience without the premium price tag, the Lucid 12" Hybrid Mattress is well worth consideration.

Pros & Cons

Bamboo and aloe vera infused memory foam
No harmful chemicals
Edge support
Budget price
Can sink over time
Too soft for stomach sleepers or people with back pain
Sizes: Twin, Twin XL, Full, Queen, King
Sleep Trial: No
Warranty: 2 years

We Say: The NapQueen 8" Bamboo Charcoal Memory Foam Mattress is the best budget option I tested. It gets the delicate balance of cost, premium features, and eco-certifications just right.

The medium-firm feel of this mattress is both comfortable and supportive. The low motion transfer feature has improved my sleep quality, as my restless wife no longer disturbs me in the early hours.

The cooling capacity of the bamboo charcoal memory foam layer is impressive. It keeps me comfortable and sweat-free all night.

I also love the ease of maintenance. The removable and washable cover makes keeping this mattress fresh and hygienic effortless.

I would have preferred to see more cotton (preferably organic) and less polyester used to make the cover. However, I appreciate that some compromises must be made at this low price point.

The mattress's certification by OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100 and CertiPUR-US ensures it's free from harmful chemicals, offering additional peace of mind.

This NapQueen mattress is an exceptional value mattress. It delivers comfort, support, and eco-consciousness at a budget-friendly price point.

Pros & Cons

Low motion transfer
Affordable price
Certified non-toxic
Contains polyester
May not provide sufficient support for heavy or stomach sleepers
Sizes: Twin, Twin XL, Full, Queen, King, California King
Sleep Trial: No
Warranty: 10 years
Shipping: Free shipping - Free returns (in unused condition)

We Say: This IULULU mattress stands out for its innovative use of green tea gel and bamboo, known for their natural cooling and moisture-wicking properties. It also gets onto the list of recommendations ahead of some of the other options I tested because it's made in the US.

I was skeptical that adding green tea to a mattress would help increase cooling. However, the green tea gel infusion really does help maintain a cool temperature, even on the warmest summer evenings.

The medium firmness hits the sweet spot between support and comfort, cradling my body without feeling too soft or firm. The bamboo fiber cover enhances the overall sleeping experience, adding a layer of softness that feels luxurious against my skin.

The cherry on the top is the CertiPUR-US certification, ensuring a high level of safety from harmful chemicals.

Pros & Cons

Advanced cooling technology
Good support with minimal motion transfer
Safe sleeping environment with fiberglass-free and CertiPUR-US certification
Easy setup with the mattress delivered in a compact box
You may find the 6" depth is not supportive enough (there are also 8" and 10" options available)
Quite a strong smell when first removed from the box (took 48 hours to pass)

Why I chose this: If you are looking for a way to add a bamboo surface to your existing mattress, this cooling and temperature regulating mattress pad, made with Premium 100% Viscose from Bamboo fabric, could be a cost effectivbe solution.

We Say: I love Cozy Earth products. I’ve already tested and recommended their bamboo pajamas for women and bamboo sheets. Now it’s the turn of their excellent Bamboo Mattress Pad.

Oprah described Cozy Earth bedding as the “softest EVER”. So I guess you’re sold now…just go ahead and click the checkout button! ????

The Cozy Earth Bamboo Mattress Pad is a great way to add bamboo luxury to your existing mattress…and an extra layer of softness and comfort without making it too hot.

The bamboo fabric is naturally cooling, and the lightweight design means it won’t make your mattress feel too firm. The pad also has a strong elastic around the edge, so it’ll stay in place even if you move around a lot in your sleep.

The only downside I can see is that it’s not machine washable, but you can always spot clean as and when necessary.

Cosy Earth is so convinced that you’ll love this bamboo pad that they offer:

  • 100-night sleep trial
  • Free shipping
  • Free returns
  • Ten-year warranty

If you’re looking for a way to add a touch of luxury to your existing mattress, the Cozy Earth Bamboo Mattress Pad is the perfect option. If you don’t love it, you can simply return it for free. Win-win!

Bamboo Mattress Types

There are three main types of bamboo mattresses to look out for:

  1. Foam Mattress / Latex Mattress: Made from a mixture of bamboo and other materials, such as latex or memory foam. The foam/latex is often infused with different materials (such as charcoal or cooling get), depending on your need. These mattresses are usually the cheapest option.
  2. Innerspring Mattress: Innerspring bamboo mattresses have steel coils at the core, with layers of bamboo material above and/or below. These mattresses tend to be more supportive than foam/latex options, but they may not be as comfortable.
  3. Hybrid Mattress: Hybrid bamboo mattresses combine the best of both worlds with a steel coil core and layers of bamboo foam/latex. Hybrid mattresses are often the more expensive option, but they can offer the best support, comfort, and longevity.

Things to Consider When Buying a Bamboo Mattress

Bamboo Layer Thickness

The thickness of the bamboo layer is one thing you’ll want to keep in mind when shopping for a bamboo mattress. A thicker bamboo layer will result in a plusher, more comfortable feel. If you prefer a firmer mattress, choose a thinner bamboo layer.

Bamboo Mattress Firmness

Another thing to consider is the firmness of the mattress.

Just like traditional mattresses, bamboo mattresses come in a range of firmness levels, from extra soft to extra firm.

Think about your preferred sleeping position and choose a bamboo mattress with the corresponding level of firmness for your needs. For example, if you suffer from backache, a firm hybrid mattress might suit you best.

Motion Transfer

If you’re sharing your bed, you should consider motion transfer.

We’ve all been there. You’re trying to sleep, but your partner constantly moves around, disrupting your slumber.

When sleeping on a quality mattress, the other person should barely feel it when one person moves.

Foam/latex and hybrid mattresses are the best for limiting motion transfer. If sharing, it’s probably best to steer clear of innerspring mattresses.

Price

Of course, price is always a consideration when shopping for a new mattress.

Bamboo mattresses range in price depending on the size, firmness, and thickness of the bamboo layer.

The general rule of thumb is the thicker the bamboo layer, and the more certifications awarded, the higher the price.

Materials

Choosing a bamboo mattress made from as many eco-friendly and non-toxic materials as possible is important.

Looking out for some of the certifications mentioned below is an excellent place to start.

Certifications

When shopping for a bamboo mattress, you’ll want to look for certifications that ensure the product is eco-friendly and made with high-quality materials.

CertiPUR-US certification, for example, guarantees that the mattress is made without harmful chemicals or pollutants.

The GOTS and GOLS certifications mean that the mattress meets the highest standards for organic textile and latex production.

Size

Bamboo mattresses are usually available in all standard mattress sizes, from Twin to California King. Choose the size that will best fit your needs. Standard U.S. mattress sizes are:

  • Twin: 38” x 75” (96.50cm x 190.50cm)
  • Twin XL: 38” x 80” (96.50cm x 203cm)
  • Full: 53” x 75” (134.50cm x 190.50cm)
  • Queen: 60” x 80” (152.50 x 203cm)
  • King: 76” x 80” (193cm x 203cm)
  • California King: 72” x 84” (183cm x 213cm)

Breathability

One of the key benefits of bamboo mattresses is their breathability.

Bamboo is a naturally porous material, which means it allows air to circulate through the mattress and helps regulate body temperature. This makes bamboo mattresses ideal for hot sleepers who tend to overheat at night.

More bamboo layers/covers usually means more breathability.

Warranties, Sleep Trials, Free Shipping & Returns

Reputable mattress companies with quality products usually offer extended warranties and even sleep trials that allow you to try the mattress at home risk-free.

A good rule of thumb is to look for a warranty covering at least ten years and a sleep trial that lasts at least 30 days. This way, you can be sure that you’re getting a quality product that you can test thoroughly before deciding whether to keep it.

Some companies even offer free shipping and returns, so be sure to check for that as well.

Durability

Buying a well-made and durable bamboo mattress will give you the best chance that it’ll last you many years.

Bamboo Mattress Unboxing

Innerspring mattresses will usually be delivered already at their full dimensions.

Foam/Latex and hybrid mattresses are usually shipped vacuum-sealed in a box.

An innerspring mattress can simply be unwrapped and used immediately. However, I recommend leaving it for a few hours to allow any factory smells to disappear. Having a window open in the bedroom is a good idea.

Foam/Latex and hybrid mattresses may take up to 24 hours to expand fully. Once they are out of the box, simply cut open the plastic and allow them to decompress on their own in a well-ventilated room.

If you want to speed up the process, you can use a hairdryer on low heat, but I would advise simply having patience.

Bamboo Mattress Care Instructions

You can do several things to keep your bamboo mattress looking and feeling its best for many years to come.

Why Bamboo Makes A Good Material For Mattresses

In addition to all the qualities mentioned in this article (cooling, hypoallergenic, mold-resistant, etc.), bamboo is also one of the world’s most sustainable crops.

I was initially on the fence about bamboo as a sustainable fabric. However, as time passes and more eco-friendly processes are used by manufacturers, bamboo fabric is starting to become the sustainable powerhouse it has always promised to be.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are Bamboo Mattresses Good For Hot Sleepers?

In general, yes. Bamboo is naturally cooling, so it stands to reason that a bamboo mattress will help keep you cool at night. However, it depends on how much bamboo is used and where. Infusing 1% of bamboo fibers into cheap memory foam, for example, will probably provide a hot sleep surface.

Are Bamboo Mattresses Good For Back Pain?

Bamboo fibers have no properties that will help cure back pain. Try a firm mattress rather than a soft one if you suffer from back pain.

Can You Flip A Bamboo Mattress?

Most modern mattresses are designed with different zones to meet specific needs. If you flip a mattress, you’ll change the order of the zones, and the mattress will not work as intended. Instead, rotate your mattress 180 degrees every few months to ensure even wear.

Is The Cypress Bamboo Gel Mattress Any Good?

The Cypress Memory Foam Mattress from Brentwood Home is an excellent gel memory foam mattress. However, I’ve reached out to Brentwood Home and they’ve confirmed that it does not contain any bamboo fiber.

The Final Word

To be honest, the world of bamboo memory foam mattresses is a bit of a murky one. Far too many manufacturers are simply putting a bamboo cover over a chemical-laden memory foam mattress and calling it eco-friendly.

I feel you’re much better off buying a truly eco-friendly mattress (which you can find here) and covering it with luxurious bamboo sheets.

However, I understand that price can be an issue with some of the higher-end mattresses, and cheaper bamboo mattresses are an acceptable compromise for some.

Whatever you decide to sleep on, I hope this article has helped and given you some interesting bedtime reading…even if it’s just to help you fall asleep! ????

The best bamboo mattresses mentioned are not perfect, but they should give you a good idea of what’s available and help you make an informed decision.

Happy mattress hunting!
