I performed the following checks when selecting the crib mattress for my own kids, and in researching my recommendations for this list.

1. Choose a Firm Sleep Surface

Choose a crib mattress with a sleep surface firm enough that it does not conform to your baby's face.

The American Academy of Pediatrics advises that "Infants should be placed on a firm sleep surface (eg, mattress in a safety-approved crib) covered by a fitted sheet with no other bedding or soft objects to reduce the risk of SIDS and suffocation".

Test the firmness yourself before your baby sleeps on the mattress. Press your fingers into the middle of the surface, then around the edges. A firm mattress springs straight back into place. If the mattress holds the shape of your hand, it is too soft for an infant.

Several mattresses on this list, including the Avocado and the Saatva, have a firmer infant side and a softer toddler side. Sleep your baby on the infant side from birth, and flip the mattress to the toddler side at the age recommended by the manufacturer.

2. Check the Mattress Fits the Crib

Check that the mattress fits your crib with no gap wider than two fingers at any side or end. A wider gap can trap a baby's arm, leg, or body (American Academy of Pediatrics).

Run the test with the mattress in the crib and the sheet off. Press two fingers into the gap at both sides and both ends. If more than two fingers fit anywhere, do not use that mattress and crib together. Repeat the check every time you change the sheets ( Consumer Product Safety Commission).

3. Check For Independent Certifications

Look for trusted independent certifications that mean a third party has verified the materials used in a crib mattress and the chemicals it emits.

• GOLS (Global Organic Latex Standard) verifies that the latex in a crib mattress is organic. GOLS applies when a crib mattress contains latex, such as  Avocado and My Green Mattress.
• MADE SAFE screens every material in the mattress against a list of banned substances. MADE SAFE covers components that the fabric and latex certifications do not.
• OEKO-TEX Standard 100 tests the finished fabric for harmful substances. OEKO-TEX applies its strictest limits to baby and toddler products.

If you buy an uncertified crib mattress, you have only the brand's word for what is inside it.

4. Do Not Buy Polyurethane Foam

Don't buy any crib mattress containing polyurethane foam.

Polyurethane memory foam is a poor choice for a crib mattress because of what it emits, what it takes to make it fire-safe, and how quickly it softens.

• Off-gasses VOCs: Polyurethane is a petroleum product, and it is the main source of VOCs in a synthetic mattress.
• Treated with flame retardants: Polyurethane is flammable, and the cheapest way to make it pass federal flammability rules is chemical flame retardants or fiberglass.
• Softens with use: Polyurethane loses its shape far faster than latex, and a crib mattress molded to your baby's shape is a suffocation risk.

5. Check What Makes the Mattress Waterproof

Check whether waterproofing is built into the mattress surface, and what that layer is made of. Avoid vinyl, which is also labelled polyvinyl chloride (PVC).
