I've seen isolated customer complaints saying that the mattress is too big, but that isn't true in my experience. It has been designed to fit standard cribs (as per ASTM F2933 standards), and it fitted ours just fine.

I will say it right now. If you are one of those lucky parents for whom budget is not a consideration, stop searching and buy this GOTS-certified organic mattress. It’s better than the competition in almost every area, except the price.

Why it's the Best Waterproof Option: This is my pick of the organic waterproof mattresses I tested because it's one of the few on the market that is fully waterproof out of the box, without the need for an additional protector.

The waterproof coating on the mattress surface is made from non-GMO sugar cane. According to Naturepedic, it's so pure that it meets food contact standards. You get full waterproofing without the use of vinyl or chemical fire retardants.

The Naturepedic organic crib mattress is made in the USA with domestic and imported fabric and components, and comes in 1-stage or 2-stage (reversible) options.

I would recommend the innerspring version because it offered slightly better support in our tests.

The fabric and fill used are premium organic cotton, purchased directly from USDA-certified sources.

It's not as cheap as the Lullaby Earth mattress, but the Emily is fully certified, more durable and far better quality.

The Emily crib mattress is upholstered on both sides, meaning we could flip it. However, this is not a baby and toddler mattress, because both sides are the same. Flipping is recommended to prevent indentations. We tend to do this every couple of months.

The only thing I feel is missing from the Emily is the fact that it is not waterproof, although this can easily be solved by adding the organic crib mattress protector at checkout.

The Newton Baby crib mattress comes with GREENGUARD Gold certification, but it compares unfavorably to the others because it is not 100% organic.

The dual-layer outer cover is quilted for extra softness. But it's made from polyester, so it won't be biodegradable.

The natural viscose inner cover is chemical-free and meets all federal fire standards, but we don't have any information about where or how the viscose is made.

The certification means this is fine for your baby, but not the best for the environment.

The Wovenaire core is where the magic happens for me. It’s 90% air and 10% food-grade polymer, producing an incredibly breathable crib mattress sleep surface that gives the right amount of support through to the toddler years.

You can remove and machine wash the cover on a cold cycle. You can also wash the core in the shower with soap and cold water - or even outside with a hose.

I struggled with whether or not to include this option because you really do get what you pay for in the world of crib mattresses. There are no 100% organic options that I would recommend in the budget range.

What Are the Potential Dangers of Chemicals in Synthetic Crib Mattresses?

Synthetic mattresses contain chemicals and emit substances that have been linked to health and developmental problems in babies and infants.

A recent study measured 45 semi-volatile organic compounds (SVOCs) in 16 new children’s mattresses. The authors detected 21 compounds in classes including phthalates, organophosphate esters, benzophenones, and salicylates (Vaezafshar et al., 2025).

A separate Cockrell School of Engineering study found that infants are potentially exposed to high levels of toxins from their crib mattresses while they sleep (The University of Texas at Austin).

The research concluded that more than 30 volatile organic compounds (VOCs), including phenol, neodecanoic acid, phthalates, and linalool, can be found in mainstream mattresses.

According to the American Lung Association, exposure to VOCs can cause the following symptoms in the short term.

• Breathing difficulties
• Headaches
• Dizziness
• Irritation of The Eyes, Nose, and Throat

Children are especially vulnerable to the harmful effects of VOCs because their bodies are still developing, and they breathe more air per unit of body weight than adults.

Long-term or repeated exposure to certain VOCs may damage the liver, kidneys, and central nervous system (American Lung Association).

VOCs such as benzene and formaldehyde are classified as carcinogens, which means they have the potential to cause cancer. Long-term exposure to these chemicals can increase a child's risk of developing leukemia and other cancers (Emeny et al., 2025).

There is also evidence that conventional crib mattresses contain fiberglass in their covers and inner layers, which can cause eye and skin irritation, breathing difficulties, and asthma (Wagner et al, 2022).

What to Look for In an Organic Baby Mattress (Buyer's Guide)

Look for third-party certifications like GOTS, GOLS, and Made Safe to confirm that a crib mattress is safe, genuinely organic, and free from harmful chemicals. Avoid anything made from or using vinyl or polyurethane foam, and if possible, prioritize mattresses that are made in the USA.

I performed the following checks when selecting the crib mattress for my own kids, and in researching my recommendations for this list.

Check For Certifications

The best crib mattresses will have one or more of the following third-party certifications to prove that the product is safe for babies and toddlers.

• Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS): Certifies that textiles contain at least 95% certified organic fibers and that no toxic chemicals like formaldehyde or heavy metals are present in the mattress. GOTS is stricter than USDA Organic for textiles because it covers processing, not just farming. Find out more in our complete guide to GOTS certification.
• Global Organic Latex Standard (GOLS): Similar to GOTS, it covers the latex in the mattress and not the textile. Find out more in our GOLS guide.
• MADE SAFE: Checks for more than 6500 potentially harmful chemicals, including Endocrine disruptors, neurotoxins, isocyanates, parabens, phthalates, and PFAs. Find out more in our Made Safe guide.

Make Sure It's Made In The USA

When you shop for non-toxic crib mattresses made in the USA, you know they’ve been manufactured to a high standard, using ethical business practices, and you can trust that all the certifications are genuine.

Poorly made budget products from countries like China do not have to pass as many checks. You also have the issue of poor working conditions, leading to potential quality control and contamination issues.

Made in the USA claims are regulated by the FTC.

Beware Of Greenwashing

Some companies exploit loopholes to market their mattresses as organic when they’re anything but. Putting an organic cover over a slab of polyurethane foam does not make a crib mattress organic.

Always thoroughly read up on the crib mattress you intend to purchase and check that every component is certified non-toxic.

Avoid Chemical Flame Retardants

Chemical flame retardants used in many synthetic foam mattresses have been linked to numerous health issues, and problems with attention span, motor skills, and IQ of babies, toddlers, and small children (EWG).

Choose a crib mattress that uses naturally flame-retardant materials such as organic wool.

Research shows that wool fibers have a high ignition temperature, self-extinguish when exposed to flame, and can meet safety standards without the addition of chemical flame retardants (Kozłowski & Władyka-Przybylak, 2008; Horrocks, 1996).

Get Organic Waterproof Crib Mattress Protectors

Accidents happen, so it’s wise to have some form of waterproof protection. This is usually either a waterproof mattress with protection built into the surface or a separate protector that you put on top of the mattress.

To keep poisonous chemicals out of your nursery, be sure to cover your crib or toddler mattress with a GOTS organic certified crib mattress protector.

It's important to go organic because most regular waterproof crib mattress protectors are made using chemical-laden plastics such as polyvinyl chloride (PVC). This type of plastic contains phthalates, which can be harmful to human health.

Opt For A Firm Sleep Surface

When creating the safest possible sleep environment for toddlers and babies, bear in mind that your baby needs firm support from their mattress.

The American Academy of Pediatricians advises that “Infants should be placed on a firm sleep surface (eg, mattress in a safety-approved crib) covered by a fitted sheet with no other bedding or soft objects to reduce the risk of SIDS and suffocation”.

Take The Two-Finger Test

The two-finger test is a quick and easy way to check that your crib mattress is not too small for your crib.

The mattress you choose should be a snug fit. Place the mattress in the crib and see how many fingers you can fit in the gap between the mattress material and the crib.

If you can fit more than two fingers in the gap, then the mattress is too small.

Say No To Polyurethane Foam

Polyurethane foam is derived from petroleum and emits VOCs.

It’s also highly flammable and has to be treated with toxic flame retardants to meet the required federal flammability regulations.

I would also avoid some so-called greener options, such as vegetable-based foams. These are usually Polyurethane foam-based, with other ingredients added to boost the validity of the manufacturer’s eco claims. Textbook greenwashing!

Is It Worth Buying Organic Crib Mattresses?

Yes, a good organic crib mattress is certainly worth the money. Synthetic mattresses have been proven to emit harmful chemicals (Cockrell School of Engineering), which are hazardous to health. These include phthalates, flame retardants & VOCs that babies can breathe in while they sleep.

What's worse is that the body temperature of sleeping babies and toddlers actually accelerates the release of these toxins right into their breathing zone (Liang & Xu, 2014).

No parents would deliberately expose their children to harmful chemicals, but many are doing so every day without even realizing it.

Certified organic mattresses use breathable, temperature-regulating materials that may help keep your baby more comfortable throughout the night.

Do Baby Mattresses Need to Be Organic?

Yes - if you want peace of mind that your little ones will not breathe in harmful VOCs and chemicals from potentially toxic materials, then you do need an organic baby mattress.

What Is the Safest Mattress to Help Prevent SIDS?

The safest mattress is one that is firm, flat, and that fits the sleep surface snugly with no gaps (NIH Safe to Sleep).

Public health guidance (CDC/AAP) advises parents to ensure the baby goes to sleep on their back, not their side, on a firm, flat surface. Also, to ensure there are no suffocation hazards, such as stuffed toys, that can impair the baby's breathing.

Many parents choose a breathable mattress as this can help make sure a baby can breathe even if they turn onto their side or face down while sleeping. However, this is not an official recommendation.

What Is a Quick Firmness Test for A Crib Mattress I Can Do at Home?

To test that your crib mattress is firm enough, simply press your fingers into the mattress at various point sin the middle and around the edges.

The mattress should immediately regain its shape. It should not mold itself to the contours of your hand.

If it doesn't revert to its original shape, then the mattress is too soft to be safe for your baby.

How Do I Know if My Crib is Safe?

To be completely safe, the crib base/frame itself also needs to be non-toxic and ideally certified by GREENGUARD or MADE SAFE.

There's no point in getting a non-toxic mattress to prevent exposure to phthalates, VOCs, and flame-retardant chemicals if the frame is emitting them instead.

Does an Organic Mattress Off-Gas?

Organic mattresses have much lower emissions (especially VOCs) because they do not contain the synthetic materials (foams, glues, chemical treatments) that drive off-gassing.

Certifications such as GREENGUARD Gold, OEKO-TEX Standard 100, and GOTS help reassure parents that crib mattresses have very low chemical emissions or restricted chemical content.

They don’t explicitly guarantee zero off-gassing, but they do confirm that any emissions are well below safety thresholds.

Should the Mattress in My Crib Be Low or High?

Federal regulations state that the distance between the crib mattress cover or surface and the top of the crib side rail should be a minimum of 20 inches (M V Ridenour, 1997).

This allows for a 6-inch mattress thickness. Therefore, the total distance between the base and rail of all baby cribs should be at least 26 inches.

Is There a Standard Size Mattress for a Crib?

The Consumer Products Safety Commission (CPSC) states in section 5.7 of ASTM F2933-21 regulations that crib mattresses should be at least 27.25” in width and 51.25” in length, with a maximum thickness of 6”.

Many crib mattresses imported from different countries will be of different sizes, which means your crib sheets might not fit properly. Yet another reason to buy products made in the USA.

How to Clean an Organic Crib Mattress

If your mattress has a removable cover (such as the Naturepedic, Saatva, or Organic Dream products recommended above) then simply remove it and machine wash according to the manufacturer's instructions.

How Do I Know if My Baby is a Hot Sleeper?

There’s no official medical definition of a hot sleeper baby. Pediatric guidance instead warns against overheating, a known SIDS risk factor.

Signs your baby may be too warm include sweating, flushed skin, damp hair, or rapid breathing.

Some parents choose a breathable mattress for added reassurance, though this is not part of official safe-sleep recommendations.

The American Academy of Pediatrics advises dressing babies in light layers, keeping the room at a comfortable temperature for a lightly clothed adult, and avoiding loose blankets.

How Long Does an Organic Crib Mattress Last?

Most organic crib mattresses last 5–7 years with proper care.

Waterproofing and regular rotation help extend their lifespan, though safety (firmness and structural integrity) is more important than age. Always follow the manufacturer’s guidance.

What Should I Do With a Crib Mattress When My Baby Outgrows It?

If your used mattress is still firm and in good condition, you can pass it down to a sibling or donate it.

Natural materials like latex, cotton, and wool are compostable, while steel coils can often be recycled.

Should I Buy Used Mattresses?

No. I would never recommend buying used crib mattresses for several reasons.

• Unsanitary: You have no way of knowing how many accidents the previous user has had on the mattress. Old pee, poop, and spit-up are breeding grounds for bacteria.
• Old smoke: You have no guarantees that the mattress has come from a smoke-free house. Other parents may not have the same standards as you do. It might smell clean, but are you prepared to take the chance?
• Mites: Your new bargain buy from the thrift store might be home to dust mites or bed bugs. Do you really want to bring them into the baby’s new nursery?
• Outdated safety standards: When buying used crib mattresses, you’re taking a chance that it was made to much leaner safety standards. It could potentially contain nasty ingredients such as old flame retardant chemicals containing Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs).
• Longevity: Crib mattresses don’t last forever. It might look in good condition, but is it structurally sound? Sagging crib mattresses can be very dangerous. They have been linked to an increased risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS).

Is Memory Foam a Good Material for Crib Mattresses?

No, standard memory foam is not suitable for crib mattresses, because they need to be firm and supportive and not sink.

What Is the Best Organic Crib Mattress for Twins?

Any of the recommendations listed above is equally suitable for twins.

Having twins sleep in the samecrib is known as co-bedding. If you choose to do this, place each baby with their feet at opposite ends of the crib and their heads facing each other in the center, according to The Lullaby Trust.

Co-bedding is fine for the first few months, but each baby will need their own separate space once they start to roll. This is to avoid them colliding with each other.
