Buying a new organic mattress is a serious investment. Given they can last for over 20 years, it’s not something we do too often in our lifetimes.

So you may be asking: how much should I spend on a mattress - and how do I know I’m getting a good deal?

To give you an accurate answer, our researchers conducted the largest mattress price survey of 2025.

By gathering data from every one of the biggest and most popular organic mattress brands, we can now accurately state what the average price of a mattress should be - and help you find the best deal.

Average Organic Mattress Price by Size and Type

The price of an organic mattress can vary between $689 and $5048 depending on the size, type, and manufacturer you choose.

Later we’ll give you a full breakdown of all the data we collected in our survey, and explain why the cost of memory foam, hybrid, and latex mattresses varies so much.

But first, here are the average mattress prices displayed by size and type.

Mattress Cost Variations by Type

Memory Foam Mattress

  • An organic memory foam mattress costs between $689 for the cheapest available Twin and $3298 for the most expensive Split King.
  • The average cost for a Queen is $1513.

Organic memory foam is cheaper to produce than other materials, although this can vary depending on the density of the foam being used. Nevertheless, it’s often the best option if you are on a budget but still want to avoid synthetic materials, glues, chemicals, flame retardants, and VOCs.

However, foam is not suitable for all types of sleepers. Some people find them uncomfortable, particularly those of heavier body weight. Also, if you regularly shift your sleeping position throughout the night then a surface that adapts to your body shape can actually be counterproductive.

Another issue is that, unless you get a cooling gel foam, it can often retain heat and moisture, making it a bad choice for anyone who tends to sleep hot.

Hybrid Mattress

  • 100% organic hybrid mattresses cost between $699 for the cheapest Twin and $4198 for the most expensive Split King.
  • The average cost for a Queen is $1899.

A hybrid mattress contains multiple layers made from different materials. Usually, they contain at least one layer of innerspring coils, topped by either memory foam or latex. Frequently they also feature layers of organic cotton and organic wool, which acts as a natural fire retardant.

The different makeup of an organic hybrid goes some way to explaining the variation in price. Memory foam hybrids are cheaper than latex hybrids due to the cost of materials used.

A hybrid mattress offers a good balance of comfort and affordability, whilst still carrying the organic and non-toxic certifications required to guarantee a healthy sleep.

Whilst they may not suit every individual need, they do appeal to a broad range of sleepers. That’s why they are the most commonly available organic mattress type, and typically the most popular.

Latex Mattress

  • Natural latex mattresses cost between $1895 for the cheapest Twin and $5048 for the most expensive Split King.
  • The average cost for a Queen is $3498.

Natural latex is the ultimate mattress material, offering a firm, bouncy feel and exceptional durability. It also features responsive pressure relief and is incredibly breathable.

A small minority of people do require an organic latex-free mattress due to latex allergy. But for other allergies, the hypoallergenic properties of latex can offer considerable relief.

You should avoid any form of synthetic latex, but GOLS-certified natural latex is organic and sustainably sourced. It is more expensive to produce, which is why the cost to buy is higher. But these mattresses last longer, so they actually offer better value over their lifetime.

Innerspring Mattress

Innerspring mattresses are still made and widely sold in the US. However, it’s very rare to find one that is certified organic.

They are typically made from cheaper, synthetic materials and use chemical flame retardants, so therefore cannot be organic. To achieve fire resistance without chemicals, most organic mattresses use wool layers, which then makes them a hybrid.

None of the brands we researched carry an innerspring-only mattress, and this type is therefore outside the scope of our survey.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long will my organic mattress last?

An organic mattress can last for over 20 years if properly cared for. Compare this to a synthetic mattress which generally lasts between 7-10 years, and you can see that going organic offers significantly better long-term value for money.

How often should I change my mattress?

You should change your mattress as soon as it deteriorates to the point that it is no longer usable. Sleeping on a sagging or broken mattress can lead to back pain and other health issues.

There are some ways to prevent sagging which can help extend the life of your mattress, but most of these are unlikely to be permanent solutions.

When it’s time to buy new, please remember to dispose of your old mattress responsibly.

Is a cheap mattress false economy?

Yes, most of the time buying a cheap mattress is not a good move. Not only are they made of poorer quality materials, but they are also made with synthetic chemicals and VOCs. These can off-gas, meaning you breathe them in while you sleep.

Does California King cost the same as a standard King?

Yes, in almost every case the Cal King mattress size is priced the same as a King.

The only exception to this is My Green Mattress which charges $100 more for the Cal King on each of its models.

Do mattresses go on sale?

Yes, mattress companies regularly have sales and promotions that can give you sizeable discounts on the standard mattress price. These tend to occur around Black Friday, Labor Day, President’s Day, and Memorial Day.
