When you're buying a mattress online, you'll find that most come rolled up in a box or shrink wrap. But have you ever wondered: does an organic mattress expand just like a synthetic one?

After more than a decade of testing for my natural mattress reviews, I've unboxed more than I care to remember. So it's with some authority that I can confirm that yes - organic mattresses do expand.

However, there are a number of factors you need to be aware of that determine how long your mattress will take to expand fully, and when you can first use it.

In this guide, I'll explain how and why new mattresses expand, and give you a step-by-step guide to unboxing and using your mattress without invalidating your warranty.

How Does the Mattresses Expansion Process Work?

unboxing a rolled up mattress

Mattress expansion involves the re-inflation of compressed materials when a mattress is unboxed.

When the mattress is vacuum-sealed for shipping, the air pockets within the foam or latex are reduced.

As soon as it is unboxed and unsealed, air rushes back into these spaces, causing the mattress to expand back to its original shape and size.

The basic process applies to all boxed mattresses (organic and non-organic)

Why Some Mattresses are Compressed and Boxed for Shipping

When you buy a bed-in-a-box mattress you'll find it comes compressed and rolled into a compact vacuum-sealed package.

There are two main benefits to this:

  • Efficiency in Shipping: This type of mattress boxing reduces the size and weight, making transportation more cost-effective and environmentally friendly
  • Convenience: It simplifies the delivery process, allowing the mattress to be quickly shipped to doorsteps and handled by fewer people

But it also means that, once your new mattress is delivered, there are a few steps you need to take before you can use it.

How to Unbox and Expand Your New Mattress

Check the Size and Leave Adequate Space

Measure the full size of the mattress and ensure your room has enough space for it to expand and air out thoroughly.

You may find it easier to move your old mattress out of the way before you start.

Get Help if it's Heavy

Due to their weight and bulk (especially with larger mattresses), it's often a good idea to ask a friend or relative to help, to ensure safe and efficient unboxing.

Bring the Box to Your Bedroom

Move the unopened box to the room where it will be used before unpacking it. This avoids the difficulty of moving a potentially cumbersome unwrapped mattress later on.

Follow Brand-Specific Unboxing Instructions

Carefully read the instructions for specific unboxing steps. These can vary between brands. However, the usual steps are as follows:

  1. Position the box near the bed frame or intended area of use
  2. Use a box cutter or scissors to open the box, being careful not to damage the mattress
  3. Gently remove the mattress and place it on the bed frame or floor
  4. Carefully cut away the plastic wrap, allowing the mattress to start expanding
  5. Allow sufficient time for the mattress to expand fully, which can vary depending on the type (more on this later)

Finally, ensure that you responsibly dispose of all packing. Reusing and recycling where possible.

How Long Does it Take for a Mattress to Fully Expand?

Different types of mattresses take different lengths of time to fully expand:

  • Memory Foam Mattresses: These mattresses typically take between 24 and 72 hours to fully expand. Higher-quality memory foam with denser composition might require the longer end of this range for full expansion.
  • Latex Mattresses: They can take 24-48 hours to expand fully. Natural latex, being denser, might expand more uniformly than synthetic latex foam.
  • Hybrid Mattresses: These often combine coils and foam or latex. The expansion time can be quicker due to the innerspring structure (typically 3-4 hours).
  • Innerspring Mattresses: They generally expand the fastest, often within a couple of hours, as the coil springs regain their shape rapidly after unboxing.

However, every mattress is different. The following factors also play a role in the expansion process.

Factors That Affect Mattress Expansion

Mattress Construction

The construction elements (layers, density, core materials, etc.) impact how a mattress expands.

Denser materials like high-density foam or latex may take longer to expand and regain their full shape than lighter materials.

Temperature Sensitivity

Warm temperatures and higher humidity can speed up the expansion process.

On the other hand, cooler, drier conditions may slow it down.

Shipping and Storage Duration

Mattresses stored compressed for extended periods may require more time to reach their full size and shape.

Sleeping on the Mattress Before Full Expansion

While sleeping on a mattress before it fully expands is generally safe, the experience may not be ideal.

Initially, your mattress may feel firmer and offer less comfort and support. This is because the materials have not yet fully regained their intended shape and firmness.

Using your mattress too soon might also expose you to higher levels of off-gassing.

Waiting the entire length of time recommended by the mattress manufacturer will ensure that your mattress offers its intended comfort and support.

Off-Gassing in New Mattresses

Off-gassing refers to releasing volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from new mattresses, particularly noticeable in synthetic foam and latex mattresses. This occurs as the result of manufacturing and packaging processes.

Organic mattresses usually have lower levels of off-gassing than synthetic ones, as they are made with natural materials that typically emit fewer VOCs.

Breaking in a Mattress

Breaking in a new mattress refers to the period during which the mattress adjusts to your body's shape and sleeping habits.

There is no scientific agreement on what is the optimum time required to break in a new mattress. Depending on the mattress type and materials, this process typically takes 30 to 90 days.

Many mattress companies offer sleep trials, providing a risk-free period to determine if the mattress suits your needs. This trial period is crucial during the break-in phase, as it allows you to fully assess the comfort and support of the mattress over an extended period.

How to Get the Most from Your Mattress During the Break-In Period

  • Unbox immediately and use it regularly
  • Rotate or flip the mattress (if recommended by the manufacturer) to ensure even wear
  • Maintain a consistent sleeping schedule to help your body adjust to your new mattress
  • Be open to changing pillows or bedding and adjusting your sleeping position to complement your new mattress
  • An appropriate room temperature can enhance the adaptation process

Frequently Asked Questions

Are boxed mattresses different from unboxed mattresses?

Boxed mattresses are not fundamentally different from unboxed ones in quality or comfort. The main distinction is in their packaging and delivery method.

What is a white glove delivery service?

White glove delivery is a premium option that includes mattress installation in your room of choice. This service often includes the removal of all packaging materials and, in some cases, the option to have your old mattress taken away.

Final Word

Owning an organic mattress blends comfort, health, and environmental awareness.

Key factors such as the expansion process, the significance of materials, and the importance of proper maintenance are crucial in optimizing the lifespan and performance of your mattress.

Understanding the nuances of organic mattresses is not just about product knowledge...it directly impacts your sleep experience!

This knowledge ensures you can enjoy the full benefits of your eco-friendly choice, leading to better sleep and a smaller environmental footprint.
