If you’re considering buying a new organic mattress, one factor you’ll need to consider is its weight. You need to make sure your bed frame can support it, and that you’ll be able to rotate it regularly and move it for cleaning.
So how much does a mattress weigh?
Unfortunately, despite what some so-called sleep experts might claim, the truth is - it depends! There are several factors that can influence the weight of a mattress, including:
So to get a more accurate answer than simply saying “It depends” we decided to do our own research.
Our team has gathered a wide sample of data from the leading organic mattress brands. We then crunched the numbers to calculate the official average mattress weights in the US by size and type.
Knowing the average mattress weight can be a helpful indicator to aid purchase decisions. However, it is worth noting that - as mentioned earlier - weight can vary significantly by brand and it’s unlikely that the mattress you purchase will be of exactly the average weight!
The following table shows the full breakdown of data we collected in our survey. You can see in detail how the weights vary by brand, size, type, and specific model.
All weights are shown in lbs.

A typical innerspring mattress has a relatively thin padded top layer, with a number of steel coils underneath. Between the coils is just air, meaning that the overall structure is comparatively lightweight.
This is the cheapest mattress type and typically you don’t get many non-toxic mattresses that are purely innersprung and nothing else, which is why there were none in our survey. It’s more common to get an innerspring layer as part of a hybrid mattress.
The thick foam layers in this type of mattress are designed to conform to your body shape and provide extra support for certain types of sleepers. They can often be a good option for back pain sufferers.
The more solid nature of a memory foam mattress means it is heavier than an Innerspring, but despite its density, the foam is relatively lightweight. All of the foam mattresses in our survey were lighter than hybrid or latex equivalents of similar sizes.
Hybrid mattresses usually have multiple layers, combining a coil-sprung section with one or more layers of other materials. You may therefore get latex hybrids (on the heavier side) or memory foam hybrids (lighter).
The multiple layering can also make hybrid mattresses thicker, which explains why they are generally heavier than memory foam alone.
The weight of latex varies depending on its density. In an organic mattress, only GOLS-certified organic latex is generally used.
This is higher quality and therefore tends to weigh more, which explains why organic latex mattresses were the heaviest type in our survey.
They are firm, bouncy, and incredibly supportive mattresses which are great for all types of sleepers, including those with back pain.
The only potential downside of natural latex is that some people have a latex allergy. In these cases, a latex-free organic mattress is recommended.
A King Size mattress can weigh between 83lbs and 221lbs depending on the materials it is made from, and the manufacturer.
Yes, a Split King will generally be equally as heavy as a King, give or take a couple of pounds. However, the Split King comes in two parts which can be moved separately, so you only have to move or carry half the weight at a time.
You need to know the weight of your mattress to make sure that your bed frame or box spring (if you have one) is able to support it.
Another reason is to ensure you have the physical capability to be able to move the mattress.
If you have someone to help you or you ordered a white glove delivery service then you may not need to personally carry the mattress into your bedroom in the first place. But you’ll probably still need to move it at some point in order to clean it, vacuum underneath it, or for regular rotation.
Not necessarily - it is too simplistic to say that heavier mattresses are always better, as there are various factors that determine their weight.
There are some examples of thin low profile mattresses that are lighter because of their reduced height, but still made from quality materials.
However, there are also instances when a heavy mattress may be indicative of higher-quality materials being used.
